Prices are reasonable, the frontage is pretty and inside there's an eloquent, old-English vibe, thanks to intricately carved wooden décor and large sweet jars on each wall, both of which circle the shop's central counter. On my visit, the staff greeted me with smiles and I was instantly overwhelmed by the lashings of lush confectionary on display throughout the store. Everything inside looked absolutely delicious and the strawberry sherbet I purchased definitely fulfilled my expectations. This friendly, high street sweet shop is well-stocked, gorgeously atmospheric and definitely worth stopping by next time you visit Boldmere High Street. I can safely say that I'll be visiting again myself very, very soon.

Jens is even decked out like sweet shops were, bright, colourful and mouth watering. Every time I'm in there, I feel like I'm in the opening scene of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory in the sweet shop where the bloke sings Candy Man while dishing out sweets to the kids. Jens is just like that. The real beauty of the shop though is the large selection of sweets on the shelves. Traditional and original sweets, party bags, kiddies favourites there are over 500 different types of retro confectionery Jen tells me. She caters for kiddies parties and weddings. So, if like me you fancy a trip down memory lane when we had proper sweets, get yourself over to Boldmere and pop in to see Jen, she always has a smile on her face, well who wouldn't working there.

Its always nice to have a treat and this stall has plenty with a few not seen before yummies too. Today at last I got a packet of Peanut Butter M&Ms as recommended by Desta H and I'm looking forward to trying them (^_^). Noticed a few things I need to try esspecially #TAB (brings back memories from the 70's) I brought my son a Million Dollar Bar Chocolate - I would recommend this, I only had 2 squares and it was luxuriously creamy - scrummy. At £2.50 a bar, as a treat I'd say go for it :-)

Whilst Birmingham has done so much for English chocolate already, it's hard not to feel like rationing is still on when you look at all the exotic and gawdy wrappings and packaging from the American brands. Our British sweeties feel a bit bland in comparison. As Yankees is also essentially a little cart, the shop further taps into a neat sense of by-gone Americana. It feels like a tornado has picked this place up from the Magic Kingdom and dropped it here. I fully expect to hear a barbershop quartet start up as I nibble, suck and chew. Just a reminder that Yankees also does American crisps and pop - just in case you want to give your sweet tooth a day off. So, all in all, this is the place that makes us jealous of America consumerism again, I wouldn't be surprised if they also stock the nylons and tobacco I can't find.

Intrigued as I am by anything oriental I decided to go in and buy some 'snacks'. Now if you, like me, have a bit of an obsession with all things Asian then you will have probably tried some pretty weird stuff like Wagashi sweets and bean curd buns. Nothing, however, could have prepared me for the sensation overload that is 'Homemade Mocha'. Trust me; you want to steer clear of these freaky little snacks. Falling somewhere, aesthetically, between a willy and a dumpling, these dusty, odd little sausages will make you think you are eating something very raw and very wrong. They come in flavours such as 'Red Bean' and 'Green Tea' and are clearly not worth the £2 you will pay out of curiosity. I ate my whole pack anyway so that I got my money's worth. I'll probably be dead by morning or at least have a few tentacles. Other delights to be found in this store are Hello Panda biscuits (amazing!), noodle snacks, wasabi peas and 'Ball Cakes'. Hello Kitty fans will be in for a surprise when they chow down on those BBQ flavoured seaweed crisps. YUMZ!

The tiny shop somehow manages to stock masses of unusual food, from Japanese sweets to herbal flavoured jellies to noodles to biscuits. The fridge inside is also packed with healthy cold drinks and ice teas. I mainly go here to purchase herbal teas, particularly goji berry infusion. Although this specific tea is little pricey, the taste alone is well worth the expense. I'd describe Anytime Snacks as a condensed, cuter version of Sing Fat Ltd. Although saying this, I often find more products here that tempt my taste. Additionally, staff are very friendly and always talk to you and smile when you are inside the store. Whereas at Sing Fat, the staff rarely acknowledge that you are there. Anytime Snacks is well worth a visit if you like bright colours, little oddities, sweets or want to explore food that you've never tried before.

Based on the traditional sweet shops of the past Mr Chill's has every sweet that you can imagine! The shelves here are literally packed full of traditional sweets in large jars that literally go from floor to ceiling. The hardest part of a visit here is deciding what to have....after much deliberation I went for a quarter of sherbet strawberries. Such a classic! The shop itself is located on the edge of the Arcadian and is very easy to find but a word of warning, it does seem to have limited opening hours. Be sure to have a check if its going to be open before you head down to have your sweet craving satisfied!

Some old-style sweet shops tend to feel rather fake and forced, but the historical setting of Mr Chill's and the authentic interior make it all seem real. It must be said that the sweet prices are far from old fashioned, with a 100g setting you back about £1.20. Best get saving that pocket money!

Teddy Grays have been doing the whole "retro sweets in jars" thing since before the sweets were even considered retro. This stall on Cradley Heath Market is wonderful. They sell sugar mice, cola cubes, humbugs, sherbet pips... ...you name the sweet treat and they'll have it. My favourites are the chunks of pineapple rock and the famous Teddy Gray's herbal tablets. The sweets are reasonably priced and there's none of that annoying "good old days" pretension that you find in some pseudo-traditional sweet shops. The ladies behind the counter are classic Black Country and perhaps a little bit scary. The good thing is that they know what you mean when you ask for a quarter of jelly teddies. I love visiting Teddy Gray's, especially when I know I'm going to get served by proper Black Country lasses who still understand you asking for quarters of sweets rather than kilograms. It makes me sad when I can't buy proper sweets from a sweetie jar in my local shop so i tend to go a bit mad and buy too many quarters of all sorts of things from rhubarb and custard, alphabet letters, cola cubes and cinder toffee. Yummy, now I'm feeling the need to sugary badness.
