Usually has just the basics in the dead of winter but In the summer it gets a bit livelier and has a whole bunch of sandwich and deli stuff along with some fresh island grown produce. In the tiny one room building you can find some huge cookies, milk, bread, assorted junk food and some amazing donuts. The non food items are carefully selected to be exactly what someone on the small island absolutely needs. Of course the people working and hanging out here are friendly and helpful and the store is a good place to find the local weather, history and perhaps a bit of gossip. A cool store to get a wonderful sandwich, tasty donut or just some useful information.

A genuine art gallery, featuring several Monhegan artists who work in watercolor and oils. A few…read moregiclees, and a few prints. Many artbooks. Because Monhegan is mecca for summertime plein air painters, there are brushes and paper and other art supplies here as well. It's lit well, and keeps the locally acceptable hours of 11 -ish to 4 -ish.

Prices have gone up as with the times, but there are some great chotkes to be had. It is always great to walk to the back of the store to look out the window at the pier and its goings on while thinking whether the grand kids would like the plush lobster or the puffin better. The staff were very friendly and efficient, and it was clear as I listened to people chat in line that this was an informal community hub. We got some ciders, watermelon and avocado, eggs, milk, steaks, and some cheese. Everything was fresh and well-kept and delicious except for the cheese, which tasted a bit rotted when I got it home and had to be thrown out. Unfortunate, but it happens, especially if the cheese is allowed to reach room temperature in store. I think maybe the cooling mechanism on the cheese display was losing the battle against the late-summer heat and humidity. But the watermelon was the only one I've found this season that wasn't overly ripe, the avocados were delicious, and the steaks were clearly high quality and grilled up wonderfully. Overall, it's a great little place with a staff that's clearly dedicated to the community they serve. They just need to up the refrigeration a bit on the display for their cheeses.

There's a few things to note about this store: they prefer you don't touch much (there are signs everywhere asking that you not) and they prefer you don't take photos (which is why you don't see many). And, because there's an overwhelming amount of stuff it can a) be very easy to get turned around in and b) can be difficult to navigate the extremely narrow aisles. Just be patient and allow yourself to take it all in!
