My favorite tasting was the Criadera. I love the indoor and outdoor dining options. The staff was great and even offered a free rubber duck when we told her we were celebrating our wedding anniversary here. We purchased the Honey cider and Bite Me cherry cider to go. They have some cool happy hour evenings with live music, and we just happened to stumble into one when we stopped by for a tasting one evening. Unfortunately, none of the wine was spectacular. It seems to be a popular place, but both of us noticed an odd aftertaste with most of the wines we tried. They advertise petroglyphs and a labyrinth on site, but unfortunately we made it here after dark, so we didn't get a chance to explore those. read more

Used to stop by here every time I was driving down from Taos to Albquerque. It's an easy stop and charming. And the wine is delicious as well as unique. After some years missing out, I was craving the chocolate wine in particular, so I thought to myself, why not order some? Thank goodness they provide shipping to diverse locations (those that accept wine by mail; not all states do); and I was lucky to receive two amazing bottles of wine. The chocolate wine (called "Black Beauty") was just as scrumptious and rich in flavor as I recalled. I also tried out the Pinot Noir which was surprisingly sweet and layered with fruity flavor. I recently had a 10/10 customer service experience with these folks and feel compelled to share how wonderfully they handled my issue! I visited their lovely tasting room for live music on a Friday night and bought 2 bottles to bring back to Santa Fe with me. A day or two later, I discovered one of the bottles had been compromised (slight seepage, air got in the bottle/ these things happen with small batch wine making!) I figured I'd reach out to them and see if they could replace the bottle, even though I wasn't sure how I'd get it since I'm only in town a short time and not planning to head out that way before I leave. Jer got back to me quickly, and even coordinated my replacement bottle to be brought to Santa Fe on a routine delivery!! Of course the replacement bottle was absolutely delicious, like all their wine, but perhaps it tasted even better because it came from a small business who really cares about their customer and product. Big shout out to Alec, (the wine mule lol) for making sure it got to me safely! read more

It was hot weather but the covered lawn area was very cool and inviting, no need to sit inside. I absolutely love their ciders! While not overly sweet, they have a good balance between dry and sweet with lots of flavor. I had them for the first time last October when I was out this way, and I've been thinking of the cider since then. So glad I was able to stop and grab 4 bottles. read more

Walked in to a cute sitting area and a super cute bar area. Outdoors I found a huge seating with a live band and ALL THE HUMMINGBIRDS in the world in one spot!!! No hookups but that's fairly typical with Harvest Host wineries. Wine tasting room is quite nice with pleasant outdoor sitting area. We tried two of their dry red wines and enjoyed them! Conejito White is a great wine to sample right now (Oct., 2022); just the right blend of Riesling & Sauvignon Blanc reminds me of a late harvest dessert wine. And for $20, it's a steal. Have an attached photo of who greats you on the walk up to the tasting room. Their "guard cat" rules as the photos imply. This winery is unique in that it loves to use lavender in wines. Quick and dirty: Decent wine, beautiful setting. LAVENDER BLISS. Slow and tidy: I stopped in with my family on the way back to Albuquerque from a little visit to Taos. It was a bit busy, with a small-ish farmer's market/craft sale type thing happening at the same time, along with some live music. It was still mid-Covid times, and I wanted to do a tasting, so there were some things to get a handle on. A certain number of people were allowed inside at a time, distancing and masking rules were followed. A desired tasting list was compiled, the tasting board was assembled, one paid at the register and took their tasting board (or bottle or glass or cider) outside to enjoy. It was lovely out so that was a nice stroke of luck. And the wine itself....varied and interesting. As said before....the LAVENDER BLISS. Wowee. I love me some lavender flavor, so I was keen to try it. And it was spectacular! I bought a bottle to bring home with me and bemoaned weight limits and luggage size preventing me from bring MORE home with me. It is delicious and I wish I had access to it from here! The staff were lovely and friendly and helpful, and I greatly enjoyed our short visit there. If you happen to find yourself driving by, pay them a visit and enjoy an adult beverage. read more

We had a great time at our stop in at Black Mesa. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, and all the cute cats hanging around put a smile on our face. They have quite a huge selection here, and almost all of it is available on the tasting menu. Only a few very high end bottles were off limits to civilians, and reserved for members of their club. (It takes two seconds to join prior to coming) They have a great mix of whites and reds, as well as a couple rosés and dessert wines. I would say the variety is one of the best I've seen for the perfect price of $8 for 6 pours, complete with a free glass! When we first arrived the one somalier was a bit slammed, so our first pours came a little slow, but as people began to leave, she gave us a lot of attention and help. She also started us out with a bonus tasting of their chokecherry hard cider. She defiantly sold us on it, and we purchased a half growler, and are looking into getting some shipped to us! They have a lovely gift shop as well, with decent prices. The wines are also quite fair, ranging from $13-55$ I would highly recommended making a stop on your way into Taos, even if you aren't a Wino. read more

I have to say I have not been or heard of this winery.... I came upon this by joining Harvest Host... Harvest Host is $49/year but then goes to $79/year and they have many wineries or farms you can stay at.... Black Mesa Winery was kind of on the way to Aztec NM... so we just decided to take a different route. So we called ahead letting them know we would love to stay a night with them in our Motorhome.... they welcomed us with open arms. The winery is down in a valley with mountains all around... a very beautiful place... and as you are walking towards the entrance, they had tables and chairs for relaxing while drinking your wine. Inside you could do some wine tasting and yes you have to pay for that but you can keep your wine glasses. That's was a nice perk. They had all sorts of items to purchase along with the wine of course. I will say we did purchase a good amount of wine and you need to try and/or purchase Bite Me... So the wines we tried were as follows: *Tempranillo '15 * Zinfandel '14 * Petite Sarah '12 * Black Beauty * Cabernet Sauvignon * Chocolate Calliente * Malbec * Verlade Merlot * Antelope * Velarde Sarah * La Bajada Red * Bite Me..... my husband tried half and me the other half.. Out of these we loved 90% but only took home 8 bottles.... There are some wines that taste great to me but don't agree with me and so that is the 10% that just didn't work out.... After tasting the wines, we strolled around the store and in the back of the store you could watch them work. Ok- the beverage we were given while we waited was decent and we were greeted with some good conversation and hospitality. Unfortunately, that is where it ended. We waited 30 minutes for a simple wine flight while 4 groups that arrived after us all received their orders including the staff conversing with them for a pull or two. We did check on the status and we were absently told it was coming "we're busy". After 30 min we just gave up and just left. We thought we would stop by for a quick tasting and buy a few bottles to fuel our trip. Not so much. It is disappointing to go from feeling welcomed to invisible. read more

Beautiful grounds with hundreds of fluttering hummingbirds to watch as you enjoy your wine. Dog friendly too! Just make sure your pup respects the cat that hangs out close by. We visited mid July and were lucky it was an over cast day with no sun so we were comfortable being outside. The day before wouldn't have been so pleasant for us. We moved to Youngsville New Mexico from an area in San Diego that had many wineries. We heard from friends that Black Mesa Winery is on the way to Taos, and we should check it out. We went to the winery and sampled their white and red wines. Craig was there to take care of us. He has a great personality and is extremely friendly. The winery room and outdoor patio was well decorated and relaxing. We ended up buying four bottle of wine to enjoy with company over the holidays. First winery stop enroute to Taos from Albuquerque of our week long visit to New Mexico. Walking up to the entrance, we were greeted by a sweet kitty who allowed my friend to pick her up for a snuggle. This is the only feline we encountered during our visit but we learned there are more furry residents of the winery. We arrived close to opening so it was early and we were the only patrons during our visit. We were greeted warmly by Taylor who was personable, witty with a degree of sarcasm and extraordinarily knowledgeable about their product and New Mexico. A bit of a renaissance man as he shared a plethora of knowledge about a myriad of topics. My travel buddy is a wine girl so she chose a flight of wine. I was driving so I took a sip each of the ciders in a flight, finishing the prickly pear, my favorite. At some point, Scott showed up and was at the bar working on trivia questions for their weekly trivia night. This prompted more engaging conversation as Scott was equally personable and knowledgeable. Beautiful artwork painted by the owner hung on the walls of the tasting room; she is also responsible for the gorgeous wine bottle labels. Also showcased, was a small sample of regional food stuffs and the typical winery swag for sale. My friend purchased a sturdy, good quality bottle opener which was used during our entire trip. A can of cider (I did mention I was a light weight and designated driver, yes?!) and a bottle of my friend's favorite wine from the tasting were purchased. We stopped by after a long hike and it was amazing! There's a wine tasting for $8, or wines by the glass. It's a bit on the pricier side, but very delicious (we've been burned by local wines before). There's a lot of variety, from a plethora of reds to whites to roses to even cider and beers on tap. There's the resident cat and a wonderful atmosphere! I'm a dry, full bodied red fan and definitely recommend the Zinfandel and the cab franc. You can take a little stroll down a path around the place as well which was nice. This review is based on service. My wife was excited to visit this vineyard on Saturday 10/10. We walked in and looked around the gift area for awhile then made our way to the menu for the tasting, We looked at the menu and stood there discussing the varietals for a bit. This entire time the gentleman behind the counter have yet to greet us or even make eye contact with us. There were two working this day, 1 younger with redish blonde hair the other an older gentleman, our entire time in the gift area and standing by the menu behind the bar stool area not one person greeted us or has even made eye contact yet. Weird. We thought maybe, by benefit of doubt they missed us, so we took 1 large step forward until we were chest against the bar area. We stood there again watching these gentleman service everybody but us, we made eye contact with them and for 5 minutes as we stood there not a hello or any eye contact came from these guys. What a way to refuse service to certain customers, just ignore them. We ended up walking out without ever getting a tasting. Even wakling out we didn't get a goodbye! I would not recommend this vineyard to anybody, it was a waste of our time. We felt profiled. read more

We stopped by Black Mesa while staying at the Ojo Caliente resort. It was an interesting experience, to say the least. We were at the tasting bar for several minutes (the bar isn't that big) before we were greeted. We had already perched in a spot, but when the bartender greeted us he told us we had to move. It was odd. We finally started our tasting and it was like pulling teeth to get pours. We didn't like the wine, but others seemed to like it. My husband and I were on a vacation in Taos. We went to your winery, browsed in the gift shop and then went to the counter for the tasting. We were given 2 laminated sheets with all the wines and sheets to complete for each of our 5 tastings. My husband wasn't into wine tasting but I pushed him into tasting five so that we could choose bottles to buy from 10 different choices. We completed our selections and the gal said she would bring the wines outside. Out of the 10, the only one I drank the entire tasting was a white. All, the others I tasted, tasted as tho the bottle had been sitting open for awhile. I returned the two wine glasses, one was over 1/2 full from the discarded wine. I picked up a shot glad as a souvenir. Sad I couldn't buy a nice bottle of wine. The gal asked me if I was ready to check out and I said yes. She then informed me that the charge was $28 and some change. I looked at her shock since the shot glass was only $2.95. She said the tastings were $12 each. I saw no signs anywhere in the gift shop or on the laminated sheet or did she even mention this. She said there was a sign outside as we walked in. Well when we walked in we were looking around and never noticed a small sign attached to a barrel below our waist so we would have to be looking down in order to see this. I told her I thought it was truly unfair to charge me when no one had said anything and there's nothing posted anywhere around and suggested that they should have it listed on the laminated sheets. She said she'd mention it to the owner/manager. Wasn't very nice but I paid the bill. I really felt ripped off. She did not care and we left!! read more

This was our 2nd visit to Black Mesa Winery so we started out knowing we would enjoy it. On our 1st visit, hummingbirds were everywhere and we sat outside and enjoyed a glass of great wine and even better weather. This time, it's February, so no hummingbirds and too cool to sit outside. Greeted by the "watch" cat, we went in and sat at the bar. A nice wood stove was going and the place just has a homey feel to it. Scott was on the phone, (obviously business) but immediately looked at me and mouthed "be right with you". Another couple walked in right behind us, looked around and then walked out. (their loss!) We took the opportunity to look around the shop and at the tasting list. Our past favorites were on there along with some we didn't remember. $8.00 for a tasting of some incredibly great wines is such a bargain! After tasting, we joined the wine club (which gives you free tastings and a great discount). Two other couples came in shortly thereafter and we all sat and talked for 20 minutes. Scott is a retired chef and obviously enjoys his work. Though not intrusive at all, he will give his opinions and really helps you pick the best wines for your "habits". We go to every winery we can in our travels and this is one of the best. If you are expecting a "California" experience, this isn't it. It's nice, but not fancy. It's not attached to a 500 seat venue for your wedding, and they won't tell you what you are doing wrong or what you should be eating with what. This is a simple, matter of fact kind of place that has great wines and a knowledgeable, (not a know-it-all) staff. Don't miss it!! read more

My friend had basically demanded that I stop in at the infamous winery, maker of chocolate wine, when visiting New Mexico, and boy am I glad we did! A.m.a.z.i.n.g. Staff is super friendly, and had terrific tasting options, including of the special chocolate they make, which is also used in the making of chocolate wine. The other wines were also superb, but this 'Black Beauty' is more than a gimmick and has won many national awards for good reason. So despite my habit of going carry-on only, i DID check a piece of luggage on my way back: a box of well-packed wine from Black Mesa Winery! Highly recommended. read more

Lovely location and grounds, but the "wine" is closer to 80's wine coolers than actual wine. I ordered five of their "dry" selections and all were very sweet and fruity. If you like this sort of thing this could be your place. More significant though is that the guy handed me a palate of five wine samples and my wife a palate of five hard ciders and pointed us to the door. We had to carry them out ourselves, and no one ever came over to talk about the product or see how things were going. Very odd. I could chalk up the wine to being "not my style" but the service was no service. Very disappointing. read more
