We'd heard mixed things about Black Peak Homemade Gelato but decided to drop in and check them out when we spotted them on the main strip. It's located right beside WGK (Wanaka Gourmet Kitchen). We dropped by on a Monday afternoon (around 4:30pm) and they were fairly busy. There's two dozen flavours and prices are $6.00 (single scoop), $7.00 (double scoop) and $8.00 NZD (triple scoop). Nice that they have four tables outside to sit and lounge about. - Three scoop ($8.00 NZD) - we went with coca cola, lemon, bitter & limes and sea salt caramel. Coca cola tasted just like the candies (there was also tiny bits inside). The lemon, butter & lime was half decent but the sea salt caramel was terrible. It tasted like an artificial/fake butterscotch. Gross. The waffle cone was disappointingly generic. Do yourself a favour and walk to the end of the block and check out Patagonia Chocolates instead. Much more unique and interesting flavours.

YES! I am surprised by all the reviews that didn't love this icecream! I may have been a bit tipsy when we popped in here, but I LOVED my ice-cream cone. Plus, the shop is so close to the beach, you can grab a tasty ice cream and then eat it looking at the beeeautiful scenery of Lake Wanaka.

Their sorbets are rich in flavor which is why we loved it so much. Give it a try, not sure why people are giving negative reviews. You can try flavors before you buy... so not much to complain about. The staff were extremely kind and our overall experience was great. Vegan friendly (dairy free sorbets) with about 4-5 options. Disclaimer: I'm pretty certain the added chocolate accessory is NOT dairy free. I didn't confirm, it's just my suspicion. Enjoy!

Review Highlights - Black Peak Homemade Gelato

I tried the peach and hokey pokey flavors, and was impressed with the real peach bits in the gelato.

We dropped on a Tuesday afternoon (around 3:45pm) and it was packed. There's tons of different fruit, dried fruit and nuts, vegetables, honey, wines (out through the back entrance) and best of all, fresh fruit ice cream. Seemed like every single tourist had got a cone/cup. It was also nice that you could sample some of the fruits and dried goods. We took advantage and tried a few samples. It's $5.00 NZD for the fresh fruit option otherwise you can get ice cream for $2.50 NZD (single scoop) or $3.50 NZD (double scoop). For the fresh fruit, you can only choose one type of fruit (lame) from the three options (mixed berry, passionfruit and blueberry). You also choose your base (options: vanilla, cookies and cream, hokey pokey, yoghurt and boysenberry). - Fresh fruit ($5.00 NZD) - we went with boysenberry and passionfruit. Lots of seeds; it's the real deal. Boysenberry base was tasty and had a good creamy texture. They mix it fresh right in front of you. - Yum yum plums ($6.60/kg) - we sampled a few of these and they were super sweet. Bought a half dozen for the road. - Omega plums ($4.00/kg) - we wanted to try these ever since we discovered them at the Nelson Market. These were actually cheaper here so we got a bag. If you stop, definitely get a real fruit ice cream!

Pretty dope that you can bring food and drinks into the theatre. We dropped in earlier during the day and bought tickets for the last show of the night. It's $15.00 NZD/ticket for adults. There's an intermission halfway through the movie (15 minutes) to grab cookies and drinks. Everyone comes here for the comfy couches and cars to sit in. It's a fun spot with a cafe inside. There's drinks (beer, wine, cider, coffee and tea), popcorn and pastries available. Their speciality is homemade ice cream ($4.50 NZD) and cookies ($4.00 NZD, three kinds). Cool that they also have a few board games to keep you entertained. We came back to eat dinner. The menu is small but there's pizza, snacks, salads and burgers. We shared two dishes. - Lamb burger ($16.00 NZD) - lamb was excellent; cooked perfectly and had a great spice rub. We also liked the beets and cabbage slaw along with the bun. - Spinach ravioli ($15.00 NZD) - won't blow you away but it was a solid ravioli. Great spot to watch a movie on a rainy day. Food is pretty solid too.
