Ok ice cream if you're out of options. I was expecting the mint and peanut butter flavors to explode in a sea of creamy goodness, but the ice cream flavors were somewhat muted, and the whole cone tasted too "light and refreshing" - more like a slightly solidified granita than an ice cream. The service was friendly, and the little courtyard outside the shop is cute, but I would easily opt for the other main ice cream option in town over this one. read more

We'd heard mixed things about Black Peak Homemade Gelato but decided to drop in and check them out when we spotted them on the main strip. It's located right beside WGK (Wanaka Gourmet Kitchen). We dropped by on a Monday afternoon (around 4:30pm) and they were fairly busy. There's two dozen flavours and prices are $6.00 (single scoop), $7.00 (double scoop) and $8.00 NZD (triple scoop). Nice that they have four tables outside to sit and lounge about. - Three scoop ($8.00 NZD) - we went with coca cola, lemon, bitter & limes and sea salt caramel. Coca cola tasted just like the candies (there was also tiny bits inside). The lemon, butter & lime was half decent but the sea salt caramel was terrible. It tasted like an artificial/fake butterscotch. Gross. The waffle cone was disappointingly generic. Do yourself a favour and walk to the end of the block and check out Patagonia Chocolates instead. YES! I am surprised by all the reviews that didn't love this icecream! I may have been a bit tipsy when we popped in here, but I LOVED my ice-cream cone. Plus, the shop is so close to the beach, you can grab a tasty ice cream and then eat it looking at the beeeautiful scenery of Lake Wanaka. read more

Tasty good stuff! Lots of flavors to choose from, ranging from the basics to the exotic/unusual. Their cookies & cream flavor, instead of being made with Oreos, has Tim Tams in it! Pretty cool and a neat twist on the classic flavor. We went on a cold, dreary day & there was no wait. Hurrah! Service was good. Pet peeve though -- the heavy plastic curtain strips that hang across the entrance -- the kind you have to part with your hands (or if you're not careful, they can get you in the face, the lips, blechhh). Those things just strike me as unsanitary to have to open. Plus if you're not careful, you could wipe your precious gelato on the slats as you're leaving. Not cool. Several flavour options and generous servings which is a good thing considering the $. Always a good flow of customers and these do a great job. Not as authentic as traditional gelato but I still think their product is tasty and satisfying. Great location in town and when you do go, always take the opportunity to taste the different flavours. Banana, chocolate and white kiss (macadamia and white choc) were my highlights. Wafer cone is quite sweet so I always hit the cup or thick shake styles. read more

Average ice cream even though they have many flavors to choose from. I tried cookies and cream, hokey pokey and walnut and none of them felt too sweet for me. I choose to go with the chocolate as one scope, I thought it was average. I would recommend buying two or three scopes if you plan to buy for two people. We made the mistake of buying one scope each which cost us $12 ($6 each) if we went with two scoops we would have paid $7 saving us $5. read more

Nice ice cream shop but definitely doesn't have the right texture for gelato. Friendly and helpful service, this spot (like most the shops here) close early, like 6, 6:30p not 10 as Yelp suggests. The hokey pokey is bomb (honeycomb), chocolate was delicious and not too sweet, the mint is more spearmint and has a really overpowering aftertaste (I don't recommend it unless you love toothpaste). Yum! Green tea and hokey pokey gelato in the lake-side town of Wanaka. They were making the gelato when we entered, so you know it's fresh. Really wide array from fruit flavour to chocolate and of course the traditional hokey pokey. Cup for $7, large enough to share. Some unique options like whiskey and a fresh ginger one. I've been fortunate enough to have real gelato in Italy, and I've also found fairly authentic and creamy gelato in American supermarkets. Sadly, the gelatos and sorbet served here were a wee underwhelming. We tried the double scoop of coconut & raspberry, with the raspberry sorbet surprisingly the tastier one (had actual bits of fruit). I guess I should have anticipated the disappointment, with Wanaka being such a touristy town, but next time I'll be grabbing the far superior real fruit ice cream at the kiwi gas stations! read more

I've had gelato all over the world and I was rather underwhelmed by the gritty texture and lack of rich flavors at this gelateria. I'd say it's just ok but not worth the price. I went to Patagonia ice cream nearby the next day and was much more pleased with the flavors and smooth buttery textures, hands down. But I'll let you decide! After swinging by Rippon for a wine tasting, we needed a place to satisfy my wife's sweet tooth, so we parked off the main drag and headed over to Black Peak to get some gelato. The line was not too bad in the middle of the afternoon (call it close to 5 PM on a weekday afternoon, albeit just before Christmas), and there were only a few people in front of us. Ordering was quite simple, and we were allowed to sample flavors before making a firm order. In the end, we went with the smallest size and went with the hokey pokey and the boysenberry. The former is made up of a honeycomb-based gelato, which is accentuated by the Crunchie, a chocolate-covered honeycomb bar. On its own, it is very delicious and does a great job of working towards really bringing out the rich honey flavor through a mix of natural and somewhat sugary sources, with a tinge of chocolate mixed in. The boysenberry was also very well-flavored, with the tartness of the berry rounded off so that it did not make it too acidic / tart to eat. Perhaps the only drawback is that it can feel a bit expensive (IIRC, a single scoop, in which you can get multiple flavors, starts at $6), but otherwise, I thought the gelato here was quite tasty and definitely worth stopping by if you are in the mood for a sweet treat or a summer refreshment. read more

Best ice cream in town (sorry Patagonia, close second though ) I love that the flavours offer so much variety and as someone allergic to dairy the sorbet is such a delight to have especially since many ice cream shops don't offer dairy free/vegan options. this place has CRAZY delicious gelato. we felt lucky to wander past and see a huge line. when you peek in and see all of the action and the clean, legit equipment, you know that you've hit the jackpot. the gelato was creamy and flavors rotate. we had lemon, tim tam and buttered popcorn. personally, i don't like the idea of buttered popcorn, but you taste fresh corn and it was such a unique and flavorful choice - i'd recommend it to any brave souls willing to try such a thing! if i lived in the neighborhood, i'd have to kick up my exercise regimen so i could eat more gelato. read more
