This is my go-to coffee shop whenever I'm in North County. I always end up stopping here because it's consistently good and reliable. Their vanilla latte is one of my favorites-smooth, well-balanced, and not overly sweet. I also love that they rotate in seasonal drinks regularly, so there's usually something new and fun to try depending on the time of year. I'm giving this coffee place a 1 star because of the poor customer service and food overall. The workers had a bad attitude while we were ordering and while we picked up our food and drinks. I found this quite rude and disrespectful. Next, the drinks and food, the drinks weren't too bad, but the food was horrible. I ordered a chocolate chip muffin and an egg breakfast burrito. To me the muffin was wet and had a lemony aftertaste, the burrito tasted like it was nacho cheese, the tortilla was crunchy, not soft, and it was mushy- like the eggs weren't cooked. My daughter and I usually love their coffee and for that, I give this place 4 starts but for the Holiday choices, we were not that impressed. We choose to order 4 of their holiday drinks. 1st I'll talk about the egg nog latte. We got this one iced. I barely tasted the egg nog and the espresso wasn't really impressive. 2 out of 5 2nd Peppermint Bark Blondie. This one I didn't like much either. The peppermint tasted kinda medicinal to me and was too milky. 1 out of 5. 3rd Chocolate Pretzel Mocha Iced and my daughter liked this one . She liked the creaminess of it and the caramel taste was present. I did taste the saltiness as well. 3 or 5. 4th was my favorite and that was the Berry Blush Fuel. I wish there were more of them like Starbucks, but these guys have amazing drinks and service. Today, we go the Mexican Iced Mocha....wish we got a large one because we drank it up so quickly! There's plenty of drinks to choose from....soo many it will take us awhile to get through them all! If you are going east...you might pass it like we did. When you are using your gps it over passes it and you can't turn around because the next drive up is something else. I saw a few of us who had to reverse on the main road to get into their drive thru (since they only have one access from the street). When this location first opened, it was amazing! The service was phenomenal, the coffee was good, each visit felt like a treat. My dog is their biggest fan, and every morning on our walk she BEGS to go to Black Rock for a pup cup. Currently the experience has changed. The staff is either: overworked and overwhelmed, upset that they are working, or just seem angry at the fact that I'm a customer looking for help. Please keep in mind that I tip every time they prompt, (and have even begun reminding them that I'd like to tip when they don't prompt) and say please and thank you every time. It's how I was raised. This is when the walk up window is even available. On half of our walks the gate is closed and they are drive thru only. This could be staffing issues, whatever, it's not the end of the world. The thing that does suck, though, is spending $7 on a small drink and tip just to get a pup cup and some pretty uncomfortable service. Example: the other day I ordered and they forgot my drink. I wasn't in a rush, and I've worked in the industry before, so I just waited until they said something just in case they were backed up or something. One of the workers noticed I was still there and said "is he still there?" To which the other replied "I don't care." I eventually got my drink, but these types of experiences have driven me away. I'm not bummed out I'll be missing mid coffee, I'm bummed out about disappointing my dog and having to remove something she loves from her life. But I just can't bring myself to deal with these bad experiences anymore. read more

It's not Dutch Bros but it's a viable alternative. My recommendation is to do your drink research beforehand. There are many drink options and configurations that simply aren't on their drive-thru menu.. At least on the afternoon I went, there was no barista standing in the drive-thru line waiting to assist you with the menu or to to give you drink recommendations (that's a big plus with DutchBros). If you're not prepared you'll end up picking something basic from the drive-thru intercom. I'd say that their drinks are really good. Both their sugar-free coffee drink and my sugar-free Cranberry Engery drink were both excellent. That pushed them up to a fourth star. - Relatively expensive. About $6 a beverage and up. You're paying for drink diversity and happy service compared to Starbucks which has a limited menu and those grumpy baristas.. - Baristas are happy and positive. - There are sugar-free options but you're going to have to go to their website to identify them. - Location is wonky and can be easily missed. read more

Unfortunately not impressed. I asked if they have cappuccinos, they said yes. Then proceeded to ask me what size I wanted. A cappuccino should only come in one size, otherwise it is technically not a cappuccino. I said small hoping it would be the traditional size. It was not, it was essentially the same thing as my husband's small latte. And very expensive to boot. Probably won't be back, which stinks cause it's a convenient location for me. This morning's visit was incredibly disappointing. The service? Practically nonexistent. The woman helping me -- wearing a cropped black top with her belly button out -- handed me my drink with her back turned toward me, barely acknowledging my presence. There was no warmth, no welcome, no effort -- just distraction and laughter shared with her coworkers while I stood there, clearly an afterthought. It felt like I was intruding rather than being served. After today, I've decided this will be my last visit. I'll be taking my support to other small businesses that actually value their customers. Had been looking for a new coffee spot instead of the usual, ran into Black Rock Coffee liked the coffee and the service, wife and I stopped in for coffee, placed our order , cashier seem to be having problems with the credit card machine, ran my card 5 times until it went through, told me not to worry that it ONLY CHARGED THE CARD ONCE, little did she know it was charged 5 times, didn't realize it until a few days later when it popped up on my mobile banking app, thought it would be an easy fix go back to black rock and get it taken care of, went back to black rock and went through the drive through placed my order, asked to speak to a manager, a young Asian girl stated that she was the manager, I explained to her what had happened the last time I was in, I showed her a screenshot of my mobile banking app (all charges were for the exact amount) she stated that there was nothing she can do for me and that i should REPORT THOSE CHARGES TO MY BANK AS FRAUDULENT CHARGES!!! I said can't you go back on see that purchase on your computer for that date since we have a customer account, she stated that she could not do that, and that I needed to handle that with my bank! We just had a baby so safe to say we have gotten a lot of coffee lately to help with the inevitable sleep deprivation that comes with taking care of a newborn. My husband and I generally get a regular hot vanilla latte with alternative milk but lately I've been branching out and trying new things. Kettle corn cold brew- their seasonal drink is 10/10 one of my favorite drinks to get here. Pumpkin Blondie was a little too sweet for my taste but would definitely try again half sweet. Hazelnut mocha aka their "blackout" was also incredible. I still have yet to try their fuel drinks and still have to make my way through their drink list but I have yet to not love anything from here. Also their muffin tops are so so good! Came in on Opening Day on Friday 9/16! All staff did an incredible job on their first day! We got an Iced Caramel Blondie, Blended Oreo, Hot Americano, and a Pup Cup. Just note that some of the Favorites can also be Chiller drinks too. We didn't realize that until after ordering, otherwise we would've gotten the blended Caramel Blondie instead of an iced one! I got the Blended Oreo and it tasted exactly like the Starbucks Java Chip Frappuccino, which is my favorite drink! The only difference is that there are no actual java chips. Overall a great drink. My dog also loved the pup cup, it's always great to see coffee shops do that :) it came with a milk bone as well. I'm curious to try their Blackout drink or one of the Fuel drinks next. Normally I really enjoy the Escondido location, but recently it has not been the best. There are a few rude workers who either don't let you finish a sentence or correct you rudely. I just went and asked for blonde espresso and the girl said "umm we don't have blonde espresso, this isn't Starbucks." I am aware of that fact. Manners are important! read more

This was my first time trying this place since it has opened. I stuck with the caramel blondie and I got it iced with milk sun for soy. It was very flavorful. The coffee was a little too sweet for my liking but still great overall. They have many coffee choices to choose from and different flavor pumps you can add. There's no ingredients or nutrition information anywhere on the internet, let alone the BR site itself, so I have no idea what's in the Fuel that's making me feel so awful. That right there is a red flag. I figure some sort of carbonated liquid and sugar, but I don't know about the rest. I don't like to be nauseous and feeling bloated, so I can't go here anymore. I love black rock, but every time I get a drink with orange juice in it, there never is. I got a fuel and it was a completely clear drink. I wanted orange juice in it, and I even asked if there was any orange juice in it, showing that the drink is completely clear and the worker paused for a second, and then looked back and said "yes" This happens almost every time and I wish the workers understood that we are paying for small things like this to be in our drinks.
