The kitchen was technically shut when we arrived, but the lovely staff were happy to keep it open for us. We lunched on the classics: ginger prawn dumplings, shark fin and scallop dumplings and vegetarian spring rolls cooked to crispy perfection. They were plump and juicy served with the most delectable shoe string fries I've had in a long time. The organic or natural wine is great too.  Start with your colour of choice and ask to sample the wines de  jour.  You'll be enjoying a healthy glass of your new favourite drop in no time. For entree I ordered the focaccia with pomodoro (tomato), anchovies and capers. I was expecting some tasteless slab of salty bread plied with a few toppings. Hardly. The focaccia was wafer thin, crispy to bite and filled with melted cheese. The tomato topping was amazing, appropriately accompanied with salty anchovies. A provincial dish that I will be coming back for. My pork parpadelle was also perfetto (yep, perfect). I loved the diversity of the rustic Italian dishes on the menu. Generous in proportion, lovingly prepared and a far cry from the 80s style Lygon St Italiano machine. Caruggi Is yet another surprising made in Geelong culinary treat. Excellent hospitality too. The cafe is full of all sorts of interesting southern and American style adornments. Also, there was great music playing. Overall it's a fun place with great inside and outside areas. I chose the gumbo bowl and corn bread. It was a cracking dish. Spicy and full of flavour with a lovely tasty sausage. It really packs a punch and is a mighty dish.
