a variety of pastries in a box

My son often buys me pastries from Black Walnut. I enjoy them, but I think they are expensive, haha. Croissants are flakey. I like the butter pecan tarts too. Quiches and pies are also tasty.

    Walnut butter tart $2.50.

This review is based exclusively on their butter tarts ($2.50 each). My brother has been raving about this bakery and their butter tarts ever since he discovered them. Cumberland is a little too far east for my travels, so I hadn't gotten around to trying them. Fortunately for me, I have the sweetest brother who bought some and saved them for me for when I came over. OMG, they are the most delicious butter tarts I have ever tasted in my entire life! Generally, I don't even like butter tarts but I know now that is because I have been eating inferior butter tarts my whole life. It's like I've been eating Mr. Noodles my entire life and saying I don't like Ramen and then I finally had a bowl of real Japanese Ramen. I have seen the light and now love butter tarts, lol. So the butter tarts at Black Walnut Bakery are incredibly rich. The filling is not overly sweet but rich and buttery and full of walnuts. The crust is crisp and flaky and I didn't find the crust excessive (which is my usual complaint with butter tarts). Ok, I'm sold. I go to Orleans regularly anyway, so on one of those trips I guess I will have to trek the extra few kilometres to Cumberland for these little bundles of yum! I will update once I actually go there and buy other items. But seriously, if you like butter tarts, you need to go there. Update 2017-06-02: So I finally got around to going to the bakery. It's a cute place in a converted old house. It has that small town bakery charm. There is very little seating. Only a table for 4, a table for 3, and a table for 2. There's some seating on the porch as well, but just a couple of seats. I tried their ham and cheese croissant ($3) and their spinach and cheese croissant ($3). The croissants were flaky and rich. They were good, but they didn't blow me away. I will just return for the butter tarts (which were sold out by the time I was there today, which was just a little past noon). There's free parking in the lot attached but it's small and was full, so we had to park on the street.

Awesome spot. High quality baked goods! We had the butter tart and chocolate almond croissants. Both amazing. I loved the chocolate almond croissant though, WOW. IT WAS A-MAAAAAAAAAAZING. Cute old house transformed into this bakery, tight quarters but totally worth it. I found a lot of people didn't stick around to eat, they took it to go. Coffee in medium or dark roast, was good. Flavour shots available too. Some parking available or you can park on the street. You can tell they take pride in what they do, great customer service, and quaint location. Will definitely be recommending this place, and it right off of the highway, great location! Closed Monday's and Tuesday's. Go early in the morning if you want any of the breads, they sell out quick!

The cakes and muffins are moist and tasty, but on the oily/greasy side and very sweet. The cookies are also tasty, but very rich and full of butter, and also very sweet. I know that "real baking" is full of sugar and fat, and this is how most people like it, but I personally prefer reduced-fat and reduced-sugar baking, lol. That being said, I can still appreciate full-fat and full-sugar baked goods, haha. They are a nut-free bakery, so if you are allergic to nuts, you need not worry about eating items here. And their (nut-free) carrot cake is really good! If I recall correctly, they put pineapple in it, yum! I didn't even miss the walnuts. The bakery is pretty and they have lots of ready to go cakes so you can pick one up last minute if you have to. Obviously you can also pre-order if you want something specific, but they do have a good selection of readymade cakes. Staff are friendly. Street parking only.

I was in the mood for a Sfogliatella (lobster tail pastry), so my husband and I went to Little Italy to get one. Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana has been around since 1979, but I had never been there before. They had a large selection of desserts and gelato. We took our pastry to-go, but they have some seating both indoors and on their raised front patio and street-level side patio. The Sfogliatella was $7.49 which is the most I've ever paid for this pastry. Fortunately, it was delicious. Very crispy and flakey on the outside and softer on the inside with a generous amount of cream. I prefer the ricotta cheese filling slightly more, but I like the cream filling too. It was light and airy and not too sweet. Service was efficient and pleasant. The shop has a one way flow, you enter one door and you follow the arrows and exit a different door. The area to wait for service is narrow, so this process prevents congestion and crowding. I like it. Great for the occasional treat, but a bit too spendy for me. (77)

I got 2 Portuguese egg tarts (Pasteis de Nata) $2.50 each, 2 cannoli $3.50 each and a cream filled horn pastry $3.50. I didn't like that none of the items had prices listed anywhere, so I had to ask how much everything was. The egg tarts were not fresh, as the pastry was all soft and chewy. The filling was sweet, rich and smooth though. I love Portuguese egg tarts for their flakey pastry with that crispiness to them when they are fresh, and I did not get that here. The cannoli fortunately were not soft nor soggy, but rather crunchy, despite being prefilled. The shell was a bit too dense and oily tasting for liking though. However, the filling was tasty. The cream horn was filled with a smooth custard, which I enjoyed, but I didn't really like the dry crumbly pastry. Overall, I enjoyed the fillings of the items I bought, but not the pastry. Service was neutral. I don't think they take credit cards because when I went to pay by credit, the man asked me if I had debit instead. The bakery is co-located with Syrian Kitchen. I saw some falafels and rice on display, as well as various dips and spreads in the fridge. No parking lot. Street parking only.

Now also known as SYRIAN KITCHEN (says on their new business cards)…read more Based on what I have overheard and read, this place is now owned and operated by Syrian families, employing some recent refugees. They have retained the Portuguese name and products from working with the previous co-owner. This is currently the only place you can get Syrian falafel in town. They gave me and my partner each a sample falafel to try - the falafels were flavourful, crispy on the outside and moist inside. I liked it much better than a lot of other falafels in town!!! $0.65 each if you were to buy. Looks like they are made to order, or the pre-made ones are within the hour and fresh. We tried the Syrian falafel wrap ($6) and Beef steak sandwich ($7) and both were delicious. Don't expect the food to come super fast like other shawarma-type places because they don't have an assembly line. For the beef steak sandwich, they sauteed mushrooms and onions along with the beef on their grill until caramelized, which took a while, but it tasted so homey and fresh. Beef was a little tough but the flavour was good. We got a bunch of natas (Portuguese egg tarts) and they were really good. $1.75 each. We also got a bunch of kibbehs (beef croquettes) - which I have just reheated and am eating right now on Day #2 - and they are flavourful and still juicy inside even after reheating. 5/5 would buy again. And of course we got extra Syrian falafels to go....because they're so good and we eat them like cookies (except healthier...I think). Lovely people, homey food at very reasonable prices. Cannot wait to come back again.

Really cool space, definitely would be great for an afternoon tea. They have an outdoor patio, not that it was being used despite the beautiful day. Pastries and food selection is great. The staff is friendly... but slow and easily distracted. The cashier was taking a phone order while several of us were waiting, pretty unacceptable when another staff member should be able to take a call. We ordered a coffee and a mimosa. Well, they had to go back and check to see if they had juice... they did not. I asked for just the bubbly instead, she had to go back and check again. How do they not know or keep things on their menu in stock? Oh well, they had the bubbly so it was okay. For food we ordered a pastry and a croissant sandwich. The biscotti and pastry were delicious. For some reason, they decided to panini press the croissant sandwich. What the heck, who would do that? Why didn't they ask? Tasty sandwich, but completely ruined due to crushing the croissant. We were expecting it to come straight out of the case and at most maybe microwaved to warm it, not just destroyed in a panini press. Cool vibes, nice atmosphere, food is good, tea menu looks amazing. The almond croissant was mediocre. After being warmed up by staff, it lost any flakey taste delicateness that it may have originally had. I just moved to Canada and hoped this cafe, which is full of potential, would become my go to. I was disappointed, but plan to come back to give the lunch menu a try.
