Black Walnut Cafe is a go to for an after church brunch. The food and drinks are always good and so are the servers and cashiers. I got the 3 course meal they were offering which was the queso dip, salmon and cake and all 3 were too good. Their happy hour menu was what convinced me to go in. They had a decent selection for HH including a few appetizers, 2 different tacos, and a couple burgers. I had the American burger. It was big and flavorful, and they cook it to your preference! It comes with fries or potato salad. I chose the potato salad and was impressed, it was very good! Their drink selections are great too. They have $3 draft beer, $4 martini, $4 margaritas, and even a margarita flight for only $10! I had the watermelon cucumber martini and it was delicious! On 4/10 a group of coworkers and myself came to eat here around 10:30am. My friend ordered "vindaloo wings". They tasted great! After 5 minutes I congested them I started having an allergic reaction. Lip started swelling and throat was tingling. I had asked our waiter if there were peanuts in the wings. She said no but she will check with the chef. She came back and the chef said no peanuts. I then asked to speak to the manager and he said the same thing, NO PEANUTS. I informed them that these wings had been Cross contaminated with peanuts because my friend took a bit that looked like "garlic" but was a whole peanut. I then left and went home about a hour later with extreme nausea and lightheadedness. I then ended up in the ER with shortness of breath. Turned out to be SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION. The black walnut cafe is a favorite of mine for brunch and the rice village location recently got a huge makeover. There is now a much larger outside patio with more shade for the summer and they streamlined the ordering system inside so the line is much more organized. I enjoy the iced lattes here and the eggs Benedict is delicious. Staff is quick and friendly and they have stations around so you can grab whatever condiments, napkins, and silverware you need. They also have a self serve water station inside near the beverage area. My only complaint is the serving sizes are small for the price you pay and parking can get a bit hectic. Thankfully they are very close to the rice village garage where you can get free parking for up to 2 hours which helps in terms of parking. read more

I've been here twice and both times left my tummy and my wallet feeling happy. I came here many years ago with a friend and was told by a coworker that I needed to try the pot roast grilled cheese sandwich. So that was the plan. I can't elaborate much more because that was several years ago, but I DO remember that I was happy with my decision. I also had some gelato (which, if I'm not mistaken, they're known for). Cut to 4ish years later and I still hadn't made my way back - simply because I'm not in this part of Houston often, and said friend and I are no longer friends, so we don't do weekly dinners anymore. I digress. My husband and I were celebrating 9 years of wedded bliss, but we were not looking to break the bank. I suggest Black Walnut Cafe, he says yes, and the Pot Roast Grilled Cheese plan is back on. I get there, glance at the menu. See some other things that look tasty... including those lobster tacos that I'd like to relive. However, I came here with a goal and determination to taste this tasty sandwich served with tomato pesto soup... bisque... who knows? It was a yummy experience. I was VERY happy with my choice, and highly recommend that if you try this delicious concoction, you MUST dip your sandwich into your soup. Bisque. I don't know. Just do it! It makes it even better. My husband had the venison burger and I must say, I was a little tempted to steal his because it was fantastic. We agreed that we'd return. Hopefully before another 4 years. Time will tell lol. All in all, try it out. I can't speak for other locations, but parking here wasn't horrible either time I went (once on a Tuesday for dinner, and once on a Wednesday for dinner). There's a parking garage which may or may not be free, I don't know. There's also a parking lot with a meter at each spot. That's what we went with both times.
