We should have come here first -- I'd recommend you do the same…read more Although we stopped by mid way into our stay, we still got to have some questions answered and pick up some additional island info -- including points of interest and maps -- view some of the artwork displayed, and browse some of the items for sale in the shop. The gal who was working the day we stopped by was welcoming and friendly. We had a nice conversation. The only downside is that there are no public bathrooms in the welcome center. We were directed across the street to the municipal building/library. Right outside the museum is one of the islands tree spirits. You can start your search here. Enjoy your visit!

Our guide was friendly and very knowledgeable of local history and lore. The stories he told us were detailed and interesting and were rich with history, which was enjoyable for my husband as well (a skeptic as far as "ghosts") Take comfortable shoes and be prepared to spend about two hours. This tour really helped add context to my visit to Cumberland Island. I knew it was an island…read morepreviously inhabited by rich people, ending with the main mansion crumbling in flames and arson, as well as a herd of wild horses left over from Spaniard and gilded age times. But Deb, our guide, added a lot of color to each character, and she educated us on the island, the ecology, and basic science (Deb is a connoisseur of science and history). I learned about the life cycle of the horses, what brackish water means, and the basic rhythms of the islands. I learned about how the enslaved people on the island lived, and about the park service and their mission. The tour is about 2.5 hours and covers about a mile over flat ground. It doesn't take you to the beach, so you need to plan for that before or after. You do get to see plenty of horses. The tour costs 42.40 and doesn't include ferry costs (around 20 bucks each way, 45.20 total both ways with taxes and fees). Deb was engaging, fun, educational, and gave us plenty of time to stroll, with plenty of rest breaks too. I had a little trouble finding the group (there were only three of us, so that was also a treat), and she called me to make sure the group didn't leave without me. I came to the island way before the tour and considered skipping it because I had made it to the beach and thought about just staying on the beach. What more could a tour of the ruins give me? I had already seen them. But I trudged back to the dock to meet the tour, and so glad I did. The tour enhanced my visit so much. I got to learn of debutants, rich playboys, lusty affairs, community gossip, and more. There is a different tour with a different company that is a six hour tour on a van. Sea Base Dock is where the ferry to Cumberland Island docks at the island. The dock is wide enough…read moreto accommodate plenty of people and gear- bikes or camping gear. Once you are on land the National Parks Service has a center there that isn't currently open to the public, but where you can rent bikes for the day to help tour the island. We did this- rental is $16 per bike per day. They take your credit card info or you can pay cash. These bikes are all made for men, if you are a smaller frame woman you will struggle with this. They are hard to get on and off of- we managed to drop the seats, which made it a bit easier. The bikes- even with these problems- make it so much easier to travel around the island. Bikes are first come first serve and usually gone first thing in the morning. At the end of the day we enjoyed sitting on the porch of the center overlooking the docks. The breeze coming in was the strongest on the island, which felt great after a long hot day. This is also where we weathered a quick storm that poured rain down for a bit. The rangers are also very helpful and informative- enjoy!

This was the last African-American school on the island. It's located in a residential area off the…read morebeaten path. But it's not that hard to find if you see the red barn on Frederica. Go down to 912 South Harrington and you'll see it on the left. The school offers some info about the heritage of the Gullah-Geechee culture on the island. I'd first learned about these people when visiting South Carolina years back. In general, the people were descendants of slaves brought to work on the coastal low country plantations in the southeast. Because they were more isolated, they were able to maintain their own cultural traditions and develop their own creole language. I was able to peek in the windows only. They are closed except for a few days during the week when open for very limited hours mid-day. The grounds are nicely maintained. And the sundial stands out on the path to the front door. It also looks like the school has been freshly painted.
