This is a great place to go and get away. Horseback riding, hiking, great views everywhere you look, and great food served up by the best staff you will find anywhere. A trip to the swimming hole is sure to cool you off on a warm summer day. If you want to spend more time in the water the ranch is just 30 minutes from floating down the Missouri River. The phone service is not the best so it's a great opportunity to shut the phone off and disappear for awhile. In the museum on the ranch you will find plenty of history including artifacts from the cave and stories to go along with along with all of it. read more

My favorite place in Montana by far!! Everyone, especially Sandra, were all very friendly and welcoming. There's so much nature & history to explore (on horseback) throughout the property - the cave is a MUST! Will and Dan were excellent guides =) Can't wait to come back for the Continental Divide ride, target shooting and Missouri River float! read more

We just came back from a 3-day family vacation at Blacktail Ranch and it was fantastic! The staff is very attentive and personable. The food was excellent. The landscape is truly beautiful - if you can, I'd highly recommend going out for an early sunrise horseback ride! I rode 4 different horses and they were all wonderful. Special thanks to Dan (wrangler) & Will who took us on some amazing rides that offered spectacular scenery and made the trip a lot of fun! read more

History
Established in 1984.
Renovations started in 1984 and have continued until today. What used to be a barn for cows and chickens (and a few vehicles when they would fit) is now the main lodge and dining room. The original six cabins up the creek are still guest cabins but have been modernized and moved a little closer to home. Gustav and Augusta's original cabin has become a museum filled with artifacts of more than 120 years on the land, plus archeological treasures from the famous Blacktail cave.

Our non-profit has lead groups to the Black tail Ranch every year since 2003. Our member groups have varied in number from 10 - 26 and we have always been accommodated with great hospitality, fantastic ranch food, great family history, and eager ranch hands, cooks and other helpers. New accommodations have been added over the years enhancing our stay with each year. We have brought guests from 8 years old to 82 years old and we have always received great feedback from all our guests. Some of our member guests have returned three or four times and still speak highly of each visit and new experiences in Montana and at the ranch. We continue to seek to expand our opportunities with the Black tail Ranch. Dave Bittner Executive Director Wildlife Research Institute, Inc read more

I have returned again and again to the Blacktail Ranch. The setting is beautiful and peaceful with great accommodations available for the individual, family, or retreat group. Sandra and Tag are inviting hosts, and the family history of the Ranch is evident everywhere. Outdoor activities include hiking the Rockies, swimming in the crystal clear creek, horseback riding along the Continental Divide, visiting the magical onsite cavern, and floating down the infamous Missouri River. The staff is fun and funny, and the food wholesome and delicious. To say the least, the Blacktail Ranch is a rejuvenating experience and a great stay. read more

The Blacktail Ranch is a ten in all categories - staff, accommodations, food, hiking, wildlife. I have been holding a two week retreat there for ten years, and the participants keep coming back, and won't even discuss going somewhere else. The staff is not only right there when you need them, but out of the way when you don;t. Tag and Sandra are excellent hosts, and make the entire time we are with them a great pleasure. The Blacktail Ranch if far above any other facility I have every used. read more
