The Mr and I were passing through Buffalo, on our way to Niagara Falls, at dinner time. After a search on YELP I landed on Blackthorn Restaurant. Obviously a neighborhood place, the Blackthorn offered a full bar, cool vibe, an extensive menu, and friendly service. The Mr. & I both opted for the Friday fish fry special. It came with a huge piece of haddock, choice of potato (I opted for the baked potato and the Mr. got a sweet potato), macaroni salad, cole slaw, and an assortment of rolls + regular and herbed butter. Everything was delicious but I couldn't finish it all - so the Mr. got extra. He didn't complain! Haha Since we were both so stuffed, we took cannolis to go. Fish fry Friday! Stopped after a show for a late lunch/early dinner. Gave it 4 stars because the Cajun broiled fish was under seasoned and baked potatoes are not offered till after 4pm. My blue moon was served in a Genesee glass. The rest of the meal was good, the Mac salad & Cole slaw are homemade & our server was attentive. Once again the blackthorn did not disappoint, the south Buffalo souvlaki was the choice for lunch today, a heaping bowl of salad with some grilled chicken (which was on the very well done side) and a piece of grilled pita bread. The salad itself was fresh and and filling, but the pita, I definitely know to ask for them the skip the grilling next time , it was a bit burnt and had some off flavor to it, but luckily some of it was edible. Blackthorn was a great experience I wouldn't mind having again. Upon arriving, you will find a parking lot to the right of the building. There's also street parking if necessary. Walking in, there is a bar to the left that has 2 nice TVs on either side (there may be one in the middle but I cannot recall). On the right is a warm fireplace. You can be greeted by the stairs in front of you and seated. There is an upstairs for banquets only, and an outdoor beer garden. Our waitress was friendly and efficient (albeit, it was a slow day). The bread was good with three different options, as well as 2 different butters (regular and garlic). My friend enjoyed his meatloaf although he took the bacon off as it wasn't crispy. His mashed potatoes were incredibly overloaded with garlic to the point it was inedible (he even had me try it and I had the tiniest little scoop and yes it was overwhelming. We both agreed it was likely an accidental overpour. My meal was perfection! The vegetables with yummy, the sweet potato is definitely my recommendation for a potato choice and I would get it again, and the chicken and sauce combo was heavenly; more importantly, even with the sauce, the chicken coating remained perfectly crisp and crunchy! Wanted to try as many bars as we could for wings and any traditional food in Buffalo. Here's what we ordered: - Irish Beer Cheddar: cheddar cheese, loads of potatoes and the hint of Irish beer. This was a bit salty for my liking. - Stuffed Banana Peppers: fresh herbs, and four cheeses served over garlic toast. Wish I could do half stars id definitely give them 3.5 stars. Very spacious and the service was very good. For me the food was just okay. Not bad and not great. Would I go back if someone asked me too, I would. We started with the stuffed hot peppers. They were filled nice with mixes of cheese. For me I'm not a fan of a very hard pepper and they definitely were not hot. The bread they came on top of though was very good. My friend ordered the Pup "Kevs favorite" with a side of their in house made jalapeno tots. For me the tots were the highlight of our meal. They were nice size tots, (which is why im sure you only get 4) they were crunchy on the outside and nice fluffy on the inside and it gave jalepeno heat. My friend said the sandwhich was good. I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich. It was good. The chicken was overcooked. But the flavor was good, and it said it came with goat cheese, which I love and they did not skimp there. I got the sweet potatoes fries for my side, under whelming, actually gave me frozen out the bag vibes. Went to blackthorn with a couple of friends after work, the service was okay, our waitress wasn't the friendliest but maybe it was just a bad day for her. The food was alright but very expensive. Stay away They do not stand behind their promotions, Case in point - Buy a $100 GC and receive one for $120. Tried to buy a $300 on the website says you get $360. Called the restaurant and tried to purchase. The manager's response was I don't know what you are talking about even though I walked him thru their website and showed him. Said he will have the owner call back shortly, but of course no call no follow-up. The six of us went anyway and..... food was ok, but nothing special. Sandwiches were luke warm at best. A-OK We came here a few times and enjoyed the visits. The service was hit or miss to be honest. The first visit we had an excellent server that was very friendly and the second and third time, not so much. It was busier the last two times and the server was rushing around, but most definitely felt like they were that way regardless of the busy level in the place. Food is pretty solid as long as you stick to the more standard bar food options. I wouldn't recommend the food for much outside of that - it's a no for me on the pasta options. The place is cute and has a flight of stairs you'll need to go up if you are seated at a table and not the bar - so be ready for that is you come with someone that may struggle on stairs. We went twice before and I have been there with my mother before last time me and the gf went I was very happy to see all the extra work they did for space the outdoor seating area is great! But onto the food, we ordered a beef on weck and I upgraded to their house made tots(remembered them from years ago...awesome) as far as the beef on weck it was honestly the best I've had in a while. Beef was very tender and juicy, roll was toasted and perfect and the portion sizes were generous. Chicken fingers weren't like your average flat ones from a pizzeria or most places, good crunch, great medium sauce and I believe the blue cheese is homemade. We've eaten here before and had a better experience but after today I'm not sure we'll bother coming back. My daughter had a medium-rare burger that was basically burnt on the outside. If you need your order fast or you are hungry this is not the place to go. The service is very slow and we only saw our waitress three times. I love the layout, astetic, and cozy feel of the bar. Location: 5.5 / 5 That is not a typo; we awarded Blackthorn our first ever BONUS half point. Great atmosphere, check, friendly service, check, great beer and drink menu, check. But Blackthorn showed us that a restaurant can serve wings AND be clean. Prior to this visit we would have defined "clean" as only smelling a *little* like urine. Presentation: 4 / 5 Nothing special in the way these wings were delivered -- a couple "piles" of wings. I'm also told, by those who need blue cheese to complement the flavor of the chicken wing, that the bleu cheese was a little watery. Meat: 5 / 5 Not one imperfection in these wings. Perfect size, shape and skin -- like Ryan Reynolds. Cook: 8.5 / 10 Overall a really nice job here. Hot and crispy without being too dry. A couple of the South Buffalo style were a bit too wet and saucy (again, like Ryan Reynolds) Standard Medium: 14 / 15 There is an unwritten rule among the group that we cannot give a perfect score in this category but Blackthorn made it difficult for us. These were just fantastic. Tangy and buttery with the perfect amount of heat. Specialty: 8.5 / 10 The South Buffalo style is also killer-- a surprising and strikingly different flavor from the standard medium. The Wing Kings generally prefer a few more flavor options, which prevented a higher score here. A nice BBQ break would have been welcome. Overall: 45.5 / 50 Blackthorn is sneaky good. Living in South Buffalo, there aren't many options of food at 9pm on a Sunday night. Thankfully, Blackthorn was able to accomodate our takeout order. I called the order in at 8 and was told it would be ready at 8:40. When I arrived to pick it up, it was clear that was not very busy and our food was ready at the bar. Everyone was super friendly greeting us. We've eaten here a bunch of times and its consistently good, but also consistently VERY salty. Every single thing I've ordered has been overly salted, but luckily I like salt so its bearable. However, if you're struggling with high blood pressure this is definitely somewhere to avoid. I usually order the triple D platter because its their most famous dish and is the best bang for your buck in my opinion. My boyfriend opted for the Reuben, which is always a good choice here. I wish the triple D platter came with their house made jalapeno cheddar tots, but their normal giant tots are still delicious. read more

They also have some killer sandwiches that come with some of the most amazing tater-cheese tots in existence and I tried one of their traditional "Pub" sandwiches with corned beef. Upon arrival, I immediately noticed that it didn't smell like anything was being cooked and I honestly should have left right then. I ordered a chicken hoagie and fries. Frozen crinkle cut fries? No thanks. The "hoagie" was more bread than anything, with huge chunks of chicken, barely any cheese and it was beyond dry with zero flavor. I had to ask for more of the sauce that was supposedly on it for it to taste like anything. My friend got a pasta and scallop dish but only ate the scallops. She didn't like the sauce at all. Group of friends from Cleveland decided to go all-in on a weekend tour around Buffalo, of the Wing Trail restaurants. This was stop #6. Feeling full by this point, but we're soldiering on...only doing a few wings at this spot. We chose a platter of 10 traditional hot wings and 10 Southern buffalo wings. The traditional wings were fine, but the uniqueness of the Southern style with its mix of Buffalo sauce and special spices (including things like nutmeg and maybe clove?) added a level of complexity to the flavor we hadn't experienced elsewhere.
