An expected treasure in Ghent!…read more Although reviews of the museum were very good, we were unprepared for how expansive and interesting the collections were! The museum houses such a wide variety of artifacts, both recent and ancient, from the paleolithic to the Roman and Medieval and up to its more recent history as an arms manufacturer. As you wind up and down the staircases and through the ever continuing network of rooms, you lose track of time! We spent almost 5 hours in the museum and still felt like we missed some things! The collection is definitely more provincial, but this gives you a much better overview of life in the area throughout time. The neighboring University of Ghent and its long list of esteemed academics contributed greatly to the quest for knowledge and Le Grand Curtius records their contributions for visitors to see and appreciate. Even the arms collection which elaborates on Ghent's history in arms production and innovations in improving the effectiveness of such weapons was fascinating! Overall, I'm so glad we stopped by and tried our best to take in the entire collection of this wonderful museum!

Given that there isn't a whole lot to do in Liege and that I love biology, consider this review a…read morebit biased... At first glance of this building, I couldn't believe it was an aquarium, since there are no outdoor tanks. I suppose it is a bit older style and attached to the Liege university, which is why. Nevertheless, we decided to check it out, as it was only about 7 euros to see the aquarium and museum (going to the sciences of the world section costs a bit extra). The aquarium is downstairs and comprises about thirty or so tanks with fish from around the world - none too large though. You got your small sharks, turtles, colorful reef fish, lionfish, Dory/Nemos, and more. Some of the displays are a little bit difficult to read since it is rather dark down there, and the atmosphere is a bit humid due to being completely indoors, but no real complaints there. Upstairs is the museum, where I thought things got pretty interesting. Although my brother was a bit grossed out at all of the specimens in formaldehyde, stuffed models, and skeletal forms, I was bio-nerding out at how cool everything was. It felt like a library of animals, and it was quite the extensive collection. I thought the trip was a nice way to spend an hour, and it is different than the typical art/history museum experience attributed to Europe.

This musem was an interesting museum, and it was a good one for english speakers to visit. The…read moresigns were in english, german and french so all the rooms and artifacts were well labeled. It was an interesting insite into the houses of the time and how people lived in them. The details in the rooms are beautiful and on a whole was relativly educational on how people in germany lived in the upper classes in the 1800s. The downside of the museum though is that the staff potentially ruin the experience. The cashier was less than friendly to me and my german speaking companion and made us both feel like we were inconveniencing him for having to part with our Euros, and then when he explained we needed to leave our bags and coats with him (which was no problem with us) he again made us feel like we had objected to this, so was angry from the start. It was only that his collegue was friendly and hospitable that we decided to continue and enter the museum. Then one of the volunteers, although well meaning followed us through the whole museum. It was good that there was someone there to answer our questions, but as we were the only people in the museum at the time i think we got a bit too much attentionperhaps it would have been a better place to visit when there were more people there.
