Likewise, it is in a prime location. However, what really does it for me is the inclusiveness and welcoming ethos that radiates out of it. It has a diverse congregation - including gay members - who are less interested in judgement and hellfire and more interested in teaching, preaching and liturgy. Some of the liturgy you'll hear will be, perhaps, the best in Glasgow and challenging at times. This is a progressive organisation which is striving to implement change and deepen their faith simultaneously. Concerned with both the heavenly and the earthly world - as some might say. The…read morearchitects were the brothers, William and Robert Ingram, the sons of James Ingram the famous Kilmarnock architect who designed many of the well known buildings in the town, including the beautiful Palace Theatre and St Marnock's Church. William eventually became an architect in Glasgow but Robert stayed in Kilmarnock. He later designed the Burns Monument and the Dick Institute. When Grange Church first opened it was described as a handsome cruciform structure with a spire of 140ft. There are 860 sittings and a hall and classroom to the E has accommodation for 500 people. A memorial stone can be found below the arch on the left side of the window above the entrance to the church. There is a steel bell in the tower which is thought to be the largest in the country. Corrosion makes deciphering the date on the side difficult, but it is thought to read '1867'. The stained glass window behind the pulpit was donated in 1896 by Miss M. Taylor in memory of her father, William Taylor. In 1902, an organ was added and it continued in use until 2009. I don't know how long it has been since this church stopped being used for worship as I see that it is now closed up and there are signs outside which state that it is now for sale or to rent. It will be interesting to see what happens to it in future.

It is the home church of the Jesuit school, and is often populated by students at their worship, but it is open all day to visitors who either want to perform their own religious duties or marvel at the recent, and rather fetching, redecoration. The building has been restored to its original grandeur inside, with clean, bright walls and some lovely fresco style illustration. The masses are usually about an hour long, and do offer a more intellectual take on Christianity. Yet even unbelievers will enjoy the restoration, and the oasis of peace the building offers, as long as the school is not using the space

In 2002 a new stained glass window was added. There are Covenanters' graves, which are historically very interesting, to be seen in the adjacent churchyard. This church is close to The Cross in the heart of the town, standing today in a pedestrianised cobble-stoned side street. It is one of the main landmarks of Kilmarnock and I find it a very attractive building. Church services there are currently on Sundays at 11.00am and also at 9.30am from June to August.

It looks odd planked in the middle of a rough Calton estate. This was Celtic legend Tommy Burn's local church and his funeral was held here in 2008. A sign proclaiming "God Bless Tommy Burns" is situated slightly further along the road.

But that doesn't mean you have to be a Celtic fan to appreciate it. I'm not, and I do. Situated in Calton, St Mary's stands proudly in an otherwise run down area and from memory, is the second oldest church in the Archdiocese of Glasgow and has acted as the Pro-Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Glasgow since 14 August 2009 (god bless Wikipedia). A fantastic structure, the building is aesthetically-pleasing and although I rarely take much interest in the Old Firm, as a Scottish football fan I found it a genuinely interesting place to visit considering the history. A moving banner paying tribute to Tommy Burns is situated slightly further along. Definitely worth a visit.

I have often wondered why St Mirin's is called a cathedral and not a church. And come to think of…read moreit, what the difference between a church and a cathedral actually is. (Yes I probably do have too much time on my hands). It can't be stature. St Mirin's is nice but there are lots of impressive churches in Glasgow that are not cathedrals. After a bit of googling, I discovered a cathedral is the seat of a bishop. So St Mirin's is a cathedral because it is the seat of the Bishop of Paisley. So now I can relax. St Mirin's was actually built as a church in 1932 and became a cathedral in 1948 following the establishment of the diocese of Paisley (diocese is an administrative area of the Catholic church). It seats 1300 and is built in a Norman style of white freestone. I have visited St Mirin's a few times over the past few years to attend weddings. The marble alter was very impressive and the young priest was warm and down to earth. It is definitely one of the nicest churches (sorry, cathedrals) in the area.

There is a fine stained glass window inside which depicts this meeting. There is also a modern stained glass window dating from 2002 which represents biblical passages. The 13th century chapel still stands although the rest of the church was built in the 19th century. An attractive building not far from the centre of the village and worth a look.
