Peruvian food.. I had never event heard of this cuisine let alone tried it before last night.
I was curious and my taste buds were definitely tingling when I checked out the Boodhound Corner Bar and Kitchen's menu. So many interesting ingredients! So much clearly identified gluten free goodness!
The only disappointment was the fact that the Taco De Pascado (fish tacos) were only available on a Friday and Saturday until they run out, and we were there on a Sunday. All the more reason to go back. ;)
We sat upstairs in the funky, rough timber room encased by a large balcony. The cooler weather meant sitting indoors was the best option for our group.
There is plenty of seating up here and a great vibe of eclectic detail. From the tiny Frida Kahlo prints on the wall, to the graffiti-eque portrait of Lemmy from Motorhead behind the well stocked bar to the dripping white pillar candles - this place is unique but comfortable and most importantly, not trying too hard.
Speaking of the bar, I was impressed to see an array of gin bottles and could easily get a g'n't with cucumber. My fellow diners were able to sample the red wine list and were suitably impressed with the offerings. When looking at the extensive range of beers one assumes Bloodhound is known for beer, but they clearly cater for all tastes.
I ended up ordering the Al Pastor (shredded pork with pineapple salsa), De Hongos (portobello mushrooms, beans and capsicum) and De Cuitlacoche (corn truffle) tacos and the husband went with the Lomo Saltado (rice and steak).
The corn tacos tasted out of this world. They reminded me of the amazing prawn and pineapple tacos I had at Shady Palms once and that I still dream about, but with thinner and more refined soft shells.
My favourite was the achiote and orange pulled pork with pineapple salsa. It was juicy and flavoursome and the sweetness of the pineapple was a perfect match. The corn truffle with hominy corn kernels, cheese and pico de gallo was my second favourite and the portobello mushrooms took in third place. But that's not to say that any of these options were not delicious!
I thoroughly enjoyed my tacos, although be warned they are small in size and (thankfully) not overstuffed. Larger appetites may require a side dish to truly be satiated.
The husband reported that his steak and rice was lovely, I had a bite and had to agree. The tomato and onion really added to the flavours.
The bar became relatively noisy with loud music as we ate, and yes I realise this makes me sound like the mid-thirties-going-on-80 Grandma that I am. Personally I prefer softer background music so I can enjoy conversation at 7pm on a Sunday but that's just me.
Also, parking is hard to get around this area. Consider getting a ride here to avoid long periods of stalking a car park. All the better to try all of the various alcoholic beverages, my dear!
I can't wait to go back here and try the delicious and interesting list of cocktails. At $19 a pop they're not cheap, but I would definitely like to enjoy one (or two) with some more Peruvian dishes on our next visit. read more
