Honestly, a very large salad that tastes pretty good. I think Blue Barn gets a lot of flack for, "oh, you're paying $20 for a salad?!" But honestly, it's a VERY LARGE salad. Think of maybe one-and-a-half Trader Joe's packaged salads plus really tasty/crispy wonton strips and tender pieces of chicken. The amount of chicken is a bit...small but the rest of it is very tasty. That on top of friendly staff and a laid back environment makes for a solid place for a bite. read more

Do you like paying almost $40 for a salad? If so, you'll love this place. They are good salads, don't get me wrong. You get to pick from of all kinds of greens and thinly sliced veggies, crunchy toppings, cheese, meat cooked fresh to order. An array of delicious dressings and a tiny square of focaccia too. But the price tag is a whopper. Even if you stretch it out into two meals, which you can easily do, it's spendy. I only go here as a rare treat now. They sadly no longer have their big rice krispie treats either (to balance out all of the healthy from the salad, don't judge!). Get someone to take you out here and make them pay. I have seen blue barn all over my Instagram and tik tok so I was excited to try it! However, I was a little dissapointed. I ordered the Thai chicken salad and the buffalo fry sandwich. Though the portion sizes are quite large I felt it was a very steep price (for that amount I could get nicer meals elsewhere). The salad came a in a large box (the picture is about 1/4 portion size) but felt the salad was mostly greens relative to chicken or other veggies. The sauce was great but I wish there was more sauce considering how much greens were in the mix. The sandwich was crispy but again I wasn't particularly blown away. It was a great sandwich but not one I'll be craving any time soon. I wish the sauce had more flavors - it felt a little bland as is. We got salads and they were both very good, Thai Chicken and Kale Caesar with Salmon!! As a salad lover, the portion was perfect but it can be split between two people that aren't going to eat as much salad. The man that took our order was very nice and friendly. The audacity to have a "tip option" for zero service. You stand and order at counter. They give you a buzzing disc when ready. Pour your own water and then pickup your own order. I believe you wait your own table too. They don't bring food to table) so who exactly does the tip go to? I hope the cooks. They are the only ones doing something. The actual sandwich is ok. I kinda enjoyed it. Had the crispy one with slaw. Smaller portions. I don't believe the $5 French fries are house made. Seem frozen. I probably won't come back unless they include the fries with the $20 sandwich price. The restaurant is way too big for the amount of customers. Bring back Padrecito or a sit down restaurant. The salad would've been better if there was a touch more dressing and more of the "toppings" it was mainly lettuce. If you want a sub par sandwich and you've got a $20 burning a hole in your pocket come to Blue Barn where they charge you $18 for a dry AF Club Sandwich (The Clubber) I'm always down for a good quality sandwich but I'm going to be honest..... I don't care what locally sourced products they stack on artisan bread, if it's dry, flavorless and yet somehow expensive AF they will never see me again! Once you get your bland ass yuppie sandwich, a drink (like not even a beer) and tip you are $40 plus down and feeling like you could have taken Muni went to Irving subs, got 2 yummy sandwiches, chips and a drink for LESS than Blue Barn. Oh and let me add this little gem... They rudely start their tip at 25% after not offering you SHIT! You get a buzzer to pick up your food. You bus your own table and get your own water which normally I'm fine with to help the restaurant cut back costs with having to hire extra staff (waiters, busters etc) , but for a $20 sandwich with a 25% tip I feel like I'm the one that should be tipped since I'm doing all the work! So where is that money really going...to the lazy ass staff that can't be bothered to smile or come from around the counter to bring your food?! I usually go to the Blue Barn in Marina, but recently discovered the Cole Valley one! I recently went here with a friend and we both loved our salads! I made my own and he got the detox salad! Both were AMAZING!! Blue Barn is very expensive, but IMO it is SO worth it. The salads are massive and you are able to include so many different toppings. Unfortunately I do not remember the staff members working that day, but they were all lovely and kind! We took our food to go to have a picnic in the park and the salads came out very quickly. It was huge a giant take out box with a load of fresh greens but the dressing wasn't mixed in and only the top seemed to have cheese and pomegranate seeds. OMG this place is the stuff of dreams, not your average sandwiches and salads. We got eerie "Truffle Diestel Turkey sandwich with brie truffle aioli spread, tomatoes and pickled onions, greens on herb focaccia. This is not a hastily assembled or ill thought of concept where they slap together some ingredients on bread and call it a day. No hell no. This is an elevated work of art and a luscious luxury experience. No joke. This sandwich in every bite is where the sum is more than its individual parts. Everything comers together symphonically, the turnkey not drowning out all the other layers, the truffle coming through in subtle way, oozing cheesy lusciousness, the greens peppery and tomatoes liven it up, the pickled onion so much better than regular ray onions would've been, adding tang and acid. The aioli spread is buttery and creaminess, not dry. I hate when sandwiches are dry because there's no creamy moist ness anywhere. The herb foci is inspired because it's not an ordinary roll or regular bread, the herbs adds the absolute oomph. Their Waldorf salad slaps so damn hard, I ate three fourths of the huge bowl, it''s brimming with all different flavors and textures, from crisp apple, berries, raisins, celery, red onion, goat cheese, greens blend, candied pecans, quinoa and a poppyseed dressing. Here's the thing: I hate the type of apple they put in it, and detest quinoa which with kale, should be outlawed. But in this salad, everything worked so well, including the poppyseed dressing, which sounded not so great. But I had the good sense to trust the kitchen and damn if they didn't come through. I'd go back here for that salad alone. Sooooo good. We also had tater tots, which I never can resist, and these are the classic, not some new fangled concoction. Love love love this place so much, I'd give anything for it to be closer to where I live. The interior is neat and clean, spartan with another floor, which is where we sat for more privacy no foot traffic. The entrance (downstairs) is order at the counter, a huge board with the menu, and you can grab their laminated menus as well. They hand you a buzzer which lights up when your order is ready. The customer service fast, friendly, efficient. The prices are so reasonable, especially for the quality and portions, e.g. that salad was enough for three to four people, though I ate more than half of it because I was greedily in love with it :-) Parking is tough, but we managed to snag street parking. read more

I don't know if blue barn in general has gone downhill or it's just this location, but I've been going to the Blue Barn in Novato and Corte Madera for 10 years always ordering the spicy tuna salad. I came to this location in Cole valley for the first time last week to pick up a spicy tuna salad to go, when I got home and opened it the amount of spicy tuna was less than half of the amount that I've always gotten with the salad, there was no mango, and both the dressing that came with it and the extra dressing I paid for were less than half full each. What an absolute waste of money and disappointment for a $30 salad (after taxes/fees etc). I won't be coming back here unfortunately. read more

I am excited to see they opened one in the neighborhood. I went in today and was greeted with a smile and an employee that was genuinely happy to be there. I had the Winter salad (added bacon to it) and tater tots. They brought the food to us. The portions were great and I did not leave hungry. Also the prices were consistent with the other places in the neighborhood. I did not feel it was outrageous. I appreciated the space of the restaurant and there were clean bathrooms on every floor. So just tied this new sandwich place in Cole Valley- had their steak sandwhich; bread was good, meat had no chance since it was buried in a sauce which "to Me" had no distinct flavor- there was a lot of it- but it had no role. The goat cheese also got overtaken by "the" sauce. My suggestion is reduce the sauce, let the meat(add some salt) be tasted, let the goat cheese be tasted. read more

Knocking off a star as I'm disappointed by their 5% surchage on top of Sales Tax, To Go Bag Fee, and Tip! @BlueBarn- if you need to charge more, just up the prices. It feels dishonest to add in a surprise charge at the end. Stop nickle and diming people and just bake it in to the price. Also please add outdoor seating. Pretty sad first experience here. We ordered two Spicy Tuna salads (total $56), which were supposed to be loaded with an array of fun, crunchy ingredients, and noodles. When we got home, the boxes were filled with a huge load of wilted romaine and a slimy blob of what we assumed was tuna. No edamame, avocado, cucumber, scallion, or crispy soba noodles. Strangely, however, the promised sesame seeds were abundant. We gagged the salads down because we didn't have anything else for dinner, but it was practically inedible. Whatever you do, don't order the tuna. Yuck. And before you leave, make sure that your salad is filled with whatever the menu promises. My absolute favorite salad place has now come to our neighborhood! We placed an order to go today and only got to pop in and check out the space but it's gorgeous. The prettiest decor out of all the blue barn locations by far! I can't wait to eat here. The salad is always great but if I'm completely honest, I'm not sure if the proportions feel exactly the same as the Polk street one - our winter salads definitely had a little less crunch in them from this location. I'm sure they will get the proportions down since they just opened this week. We will be here a lot and are so excited it's nearby. read more

I was glad to find Blue Barn. Their salads are the best of all the online restaurants I've tried so far. The food is fresh and plentiful. HOWEVER. In order for me to continue to give them my business, especially given how expensive their salads are, I will need to see three changes. First, I usually put together my own salad. Given the cost of the salads, they really should be more generous with the ingredients we choose as opposed to all the greens which predominate the salad. Be more generous with the pickled red onions, with the garbanzo beans, with the roasted beets, etc. [Other reviewers have pointed to this about the measly portions of the protein they provide]. My second issue: Stop stapling the carry bag together. I really dislike dealing with the staples. They're a hassle to take out and they've gotten stuck in my fingers more than once. No fun. And last, these salads need to be eaten fresh. Even after 1 night in the fridge, the greens have lost their freshness and taste terrible. The generous portions are just too big for one meal if you're one person. Why not offer a 1/2 portion at half the cost or a Kid's Salad. Until that happens, I won't be ordering from Blue Barn again. read more

The food and service at Blue Barn is great! I had the Kale Caesar and my granddaughter had the Buffalo chicken sandwich! Both plates were nicely arranged. The Kale salad was humongous! We also ordered delicious, crispy fries. It's a nice lunch spot, very clean, super friendly service. Large servings for reasonable prices and the food was really fresh and delicious. read more
