Took the Fort Fisher ferry over to Southport for the day, and we stopped in for an early lunch. They were not busy yet, which was our plan. Eat first, then do all our walking. We were greeted by very friendly staff that seated us in a back corner. No foot traffic over there. Server came by for drink orders and we had some time to look over the large menu. It is your typical diner food. Big portions and all fresh made. We tried the Henny Penny sandwich with side of fries and the Reuben with side of fries. Chicken was cooked perfectly on this wonderful roll. Looked delicious. The Reuben meat was chopped and mixed with the sauce and sauerkraut. Very easy to eat this way. And I love the marble rye bread. Not sure where they get their bread but both sandwiches were amazing. Fries were hot and crispy too. This is a great spot right in the middle of Southport. When we finished and left, almost every table was full, even outside tables. There are only about 8 tables inside, so when they are busy, I'm sure there is a wait. We have visited Blue Cow many times and the main thing that brought us back was the fresh squeezed lemonade! The lemonade is still great, however it used to be sold with one refill only. On our visit last Friday it is now per glass, no refill. For $4.75 per glass, it is still good, but we will probably pass next time. Actually, we will probably pass in general and try another place when in the mood for a burger. Both of our burgers were just ok and in the past visits they were outstanding, maybe it was just an off day, but it was kind of expensive for mediocre burgers and the lemonade no longer coming with at least one refill. The onion rings are still fantastic! Although, that basket of rings was $10.50 We come to Southport at least 3 times a year and this is a cute restaurant with very friendly staff and excellent service! But it just wasn't as good as past visits and for the price there are other places we will try before returning. To those about to nosh, good luck! read more

We've been here four times maybe five times. It's been up and down. The last time was extremely disappointing. The deep fried sides were used in very very old greasy oil. It's hard to overcome that in reviewing an entire meal. Service is always good and I like the people there, but I don't think the food's all that great. Solid beer selection but otherwise I think there are other options in town for American fare. Burgers, I think they're staple, are not in the top three just in downtown Southport in our humble opinion. We will return, but it'll be less frequent. read more

An extremely pleasant surprise in what has to be one of the best small town eating destinations I've found... Southport, NC. My family makes a routine trip each year to Oak Island just down the road, so finding new places to eat on and off the island is a yearly task we enjoy. On this day we were looking for a place to eat downtown while walking around and perusing some shops, and upon breaking out our trusty Yelp app, discovered the Blue Cow had great reviews. We walked up the street to find a small, but very inviting, restaurant with a little outdoor seating to go with about 8-10 indoor tables. The menu features sandwiches, tacos, burgers, and a few other lunchy type things. We went with the fried pickles as we were feeling pretty hungry. These came out in a way I've not seen before, pickle "strips" but not like a full pickle spear. More like someone cut pickles into strings and battered them up. They were tasty and unique, with a good ranch dip. I ordered "The Sorry Charlie" which was an excellent decision. This was a really nice size chunk of tuna, perfectly grilled and soy glazed with sesame seeds, topped with arugula, an asian slaw which was great, and a little mayo. It came with a side, and I chose hot chips. IT. WAS. AWESOME. As in, just as good, if not better than, my favorite place to eat in Southport... Provisions. This was a more finely crafted sandwich, and the thick slice of tuna was still perfectly pink in the middle. Could not have been more fresh or delicious. My hot chips, also exactly how I like them. Crispy! No floppies here, again, with that good ranch. In general, I was very satisfied with this meal, and look forward to coming back in future years. Our family ate here while on vacation. We enjoyed it. The Rueben and Prime Rib were good. The hamburgers actually got mixed reviews in the family. My husband and daughter enjoyed their burgers. I really enjoyed my meal at Blue Cow, the food was yummy and exactly what my family wanted to eat. The menu was big and it was hard to choose between dishes. The staff were friendly and attentive. However I have to say this place has zero atmosphere--it's very bright, there were extra chairs stacked against the wall, the main view was into the back where a mop and bucket sat waiting to be deployed. Definitely giving off pre-Carmy "The Bear/Beef" vibes. Not great. You might not mind for lunch but not very nice for dinner. It reminded me of a takeout place that also had seating. I love a burger joint that doesn't hold back on size or toppings as I'd much rather have a big juicy burger than an artsy one. This one definitely accomplished that.
