We had such a lovely day in the orchard! It wasn't too crowded, and the weather was just perfect. Note, no dogs allowed in the orchard. There was plenty of parking on both sides of the road, and there were no tickets or admission charges--you just wandered around the orchard. You could buy a bag for picking apples and pears, and they had a huge variety of apples. There was also a field filled with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes. They have a store with pies, jams, and all things apple. Prices in the store are moderate, but the quality and freshness is tops. It's a fantastic place for families, and it's a wonderful way to kick off the fall season! read more

Had my 14 pound terrier with me. She's a very calm and quiet low-key dog. I looked for any signs that indicated no pets allowed before I entered and didn't see any. Next thing I know, one of the employees is stomping towards me yelling at me that no dogs are allowed. I didn't say a word, just headed for the exit with my tail between my legs. You would've thought I had committed a crime the way she overreacted. To add, the shelves were mostly empty and the place has zero character or charm. Blue jay orchards is by far the greatest apple picking experience I ever had. The fields had huge trees covered in many different types of apples and also a really good store. The fields seemed endless and the further we walked the more they had. The apple bags where 2 for $20 for the smaller ones and they easily hold 12+ apples in each plus plenty to eat while walking around and trying out the different varieties. The store has a huge selection of pies, jelly's , honeys, apple cider donuts and much much more. read more

They don't have any apple picking this year! That's not what really bothered me though. I have a "Real" service dog and as soon as I walked in a woman came up to me and let me know that no dogs were allowed, she wasn't nice about it either! I explained that she is my service dog and she had the proper attire on. She still went on about how no dogs were allowed. I have been going to Blue Jay Orchards with my family for years. Every year, it seems to get a little less appealing to return. This year, we decided to go on a Sunday morning in October. Not only was it a reallllly long walk to find decent apples (it would have been good to have a heads-up about this; I was ready to return our bags and leave), BUT... It was freezing, and not unexpectedly freezing. It's been cold for days. All we really wanted when we were done was a cup of hot cocoa, or hot cider, or hell, I would have been happy with hot water!! But no. Nothing hot to drink. Not. One. Thing. So we had to literally drive to Dunkin' Donuts to get warm beverages to go with our tasty (albeit not warm) apple cider donuts. And I know this sounds very much like a "first world problem", and I'm really not one to complain, but when you've got kids with you, these seemingly insignificant issues can escalate quickly. Farm stand is good to get local jams and jellies but the apples were slim Pickens (no pun intended) when we went. Super muddy and washed out fields too in the fall, wear boots and clothes you won't care about getting dirty. Very busy, but also family friendly. read more

This is a regular spot we hit every fall for our family apple picking outing. Prices are reasonable and there is always plenty of fruit. Get there early (10am on weekends) before it gets too busy. Tis the season for apple picking and I was very happy to go to Blue Jays at the reccomendation of a friend. Here is actually plenty of parking and to keep things safe they have a police officer directing traffic. Seems like a popular apple orchard in bethel. We got there two hours before closing and had plenty of time to walk around the orchard, the market and the small pumpkin patch. The prices are reasonable and they do take card. I got a small bag for about $5 and was able to fit about a dozen apples in them. There is a good variety of apples but when we got there, many of the apples were either already picked or over ripe on the tree. We went at the end of September. If not though is that they have crates filled with apples that the staff must have picked and we were able to get some good apples from there. It was also very muddy so do not wear nice sneakers. There is a hay ride that we did not get the chance to go on but it seemed fun. The staff are also very nice and helpful. They are around the orchard in golf carts and if it seems like you are done, they will ask if you would like a ride back. The maker is also great and I suggest getting some cider and apple cider donuts. read more

We had a great day apple and pumpkin picking! 2 complaints: #1 everywhere you walk is gravel, I have neuropathy and every rock I stepped on felt like a knife going through my foot (only people with my condition would understand). I can imagine this is a tripping hazard for little ones and hard for people in summer shoes to walk on. #2 No one who works in the store knows anything. I asked several "kids" who worked there a few questions and the only response I would get is " I'm not sure, probably if it's not out we don't have it". At least the girl at the register said "I don't know, let me find out" and she did. If you have people who don't know what they are doing at least train them to ask someone who might know. UGH Otherwise it was the perfect fall experience. Can't wait to taste the apple pies we will make with the fresh delicious apples! read more

Rip-Off! This is one of those new 'pick-your own' spots that picks your pocket! NEVER buy a so-called PECAN PIE that actually is a 'corn syrup' pie with a few pecans. I bought this for my grandmother who loves pecan pie and was so embarassed when I cut her a slice, she took a bite, and then pushed her plate away! I asked 'What's wrong Granny' and she replied, 'There aren't any pecans!' I took a taste and what a waste of money - this is a horrible attempt at a pie and a rip-off to customers. Additionally, they sell apples that are slightly bruised for apple sauce and the like at a price of the best apples in the supper market. T These people have lost me as a customer in their greed is more than any quality that they had in the past. read more

Seeing the foliage on the drive to this orchard was an added touch. There was ample parking and the staff were cordial. My granddaughters found perfect pumpkins for carving and for painting. Mine is beautifully displayed on my desk at work. Will definitely be returning. read more

Blue Jay's has been a staple in Bethel for many, many years and for good reason. Every fall the orchard opens to the public for apple picking and they offer many different kinds of apple. Don't like New England's McIntosh? That's okay, there's plenty of others to choose from like Cortland, Gala, Stayman, Winesap, Mutsu, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Breaburn and Fuji. Blue Jay's makes an incredible amount of food items from the stock of their orchard, which can be found either in the store right there at the orchard or at Bethel Food Market in the center of town. The number one thing any visitor should buy is a carton of apple cider to go along with your apple cider donuts. There is an array of other items like jams, jellies, pies, breads, and much more. Years and years ago, Blue Jay's and the Bethel Jaycees teamed up for the Haunted Hayride and Haunted House at the Orchard which was always great fun. Now, customers can take a wagon ride of the orchard on weekend days. There is also an opportunity to pick your own pumpkins. Fair warning to those wanting to apple pick at Blue Jay's, the warm winter and late freeze earlier this year caused the orchard to lose a majority of their apples and they cannot offer apple picking. They still are able to keep their small market stocked if you want to drive out to pick up some cider donuts or other items. read more

Cute little Orchard. I came in looking for Macintosh apples. I was in a baking mood. I filled up a bag and was happy! The apples were a little small but were very good. The apple picking area is across the street and looks like a nice sized orchard. They offer the same items most do (pies and donuts, jars of jellies and apple sauces. Staff is super nice and helpful. This is our first trip to Bluejay orchards. My husband and I go on an annual fall apple picking excursion and we chose this place for this year's visit. It was quite an operation, they had a cop directing traffic. There were plenty of places to park. There were a lot of people but you didn't feel like you were surrounded whenever you were picking apples. Many of the apples happened to be picked over however if you walk to the very back of the rose there were some good options left. They charge per size bag and the options they have our $12 bag, $20 bag, or $40 bag. They also have a store where they sell a lot of Apple productsAnd baked goods, apple cider donuts, and apple cider. As well as pumpkins, etc. The staff was very friendly and nice. There were a lot of people wandering around but it didn't seem to interfere with the experience. We had a nice time and would recommend this place for family apple picking. I believe they also had hayrides as an option as well. read more

Blue Jay Orchards is a nice little getaway without having to actually get too far away from Danbury. As you would expect, it offers the options to pick your own or the convenience of purchasing bags of apples or loose apples in bulk. There's outside activities for the kids too. I was interested in the bakery and shop today. The cider donuts are oh so good, as are the breads. I was a bit disappointed in the pies however. I do check the ingredients, and personally I rarely buy pies with shortening or margarine in the crust (though I do understand it would be a lot more expensive to have to use butter). But other than that, if I lived locally, I'd visit here often for the baked goods and definitely the apples. read more

I drove an hour to meet my friend at this place, and I came away learning several things: - Blue Jay Orchards has a humongous selection of apples. This place has row after row of apple trees that are simply laden with fruit. There are trees full of Granny Smith, Fuji, McIntosh, Macoun, Stayman and the always-persnickety Red Delicious. You can pick what you like, and wander the orchards for as long as you like - or at least until your bag fills up, which brings me to the next item. - Bags: You can't bring your own. Rather, you have to purchase one of three bags that Blue Jay Orchards offers. The smallest bag is $10, while a medium-sized bag will cost you $20. I think the largest bag tops out at $30, but I am not sure because I didn't even consider that size. It's a little ridiculous to pay that much for plastic bags, even if they do have Blue Jay Orchard's name on them. But fork over the cash, or you won't get near the orchard - and that's what you came for, right? - The pumpkins at Blue Jay Orchards are great, although it being mid-October the selection was somewhat thin. But get out there and look for one nevertheless - the Great Pumpkin no doubt awaits! - Hot apple cider, jellies, jams, pies, soup stocks and fixings, honey and baked goods await your purchase in the Blue Jay Orchards store. If you do nothing else before you leave, buy a cup of hot cider. It is lovely! - Parking can be a hassle due to the crowds. Unless you arrive relatively early, be prepared to dodge crowds and people toting pumpkins and balancing bags of apples as you park your car. - Public restrooms do not exist at Blue Jay Orchards. Unless you want to drive 3 minutes or so down the road to the Big Y supermarket and use their customer restrooms, you'll resort to the port-o-potty, and given the crowds I mentioned above, you'll immediately regret it. But bathrooms aside, Blue Jay Orchards is great. It can compete with equally large orchards in New York, and aside from being a hop, a skip and a jump from the Empire State, it is far enough north in Fairfield County to be almost countryish. A definite must-visit before fall winds down and winter picks up. read more

The boys and I had a blast here today. They don't have have pick-your-own apples this year, but they had a nice selection inside the store along with those Oh-My-God-there's-an-orgy-in-my-mouth cider doughnuts. ;o) The pumpkin patch is so much fun for the little ones and we got two nice-sized beauties for under $15! They have an apple trivia hunt and for two bucks a person, they'll take you on a hayride tour through the orchard. Wonderful way to spend a fall afternoon. read more

It's apple orchard time in CT and Blue Jay does not disappoint! Many types of apples there for the picking. Of course, you must use their bags--small (holds about 10-15 lbs) for $20 and $35 for the bigger bag (about 2x the smaller). Considering apple prices, a bit high but there is something to be said for spending some time outside on a beautiful day picking apples with your daughter. They have adequate parking (even for busy days as today) and enough staff. You can pick your own pumpkins too (69¢ lb), they have wheelbarrows to use to haul the heavier ones. We wandered in to the store and they have fresh cider and even better, the BEST cider doughnuts EVER! Also, pies, crisps, jams, etc., etc. There is also a scenic hay ride (without hay), that is about 15 minutes and $2 per person. All in all a great way to spend a beautiful day outdoors! read more

went back this year, packed as ever .. but they lost two stars in my book. after picking our apples and getting pumpkins we went into the store and tried to buy some of their 'famous' cider donuts and were told they were sold out and the donut machine was broken - the sales girls encouraged everyone to buy pies instead - and many people did. 5 minutes later she came out with more donuts - some people that wanted donuts already spent 3x more $$ on pies.. how is that fair? with pick you own apples outside we paid $10 for about 4 lbs of very large mutsu apples.. not a real good deal. most PYO places charge by weight, not by the size of the bag. still, its was fun and the kids liked it but overall it was a bit of a bummer. read more
