So, each time you go into the store, there is always something new to find. Vesta and I have a project where we photograph people on Second Street in Belmont Shore and yesterday, we wandered into Blue Windows and met Leslie, who introduced us to the store and kept us in there for about twenty minutes armed with only an infectious smile and a positive attitude. Years ago, we owned a record store down the street and I swear if our employees, had just a fractions of what she has, customer relations wise, that store would still be open. I've been here a handful of times and always spend at least $50 + each visit. I love coming here because I live down the street, it's walkable and they have a cute selection to choose unique gifts in a pinch. Sadly, I don't think I can continue supporting this business. There is a noticeable difference in how they treat people of color versus non people of color. I'm never greeted, and the staff are always extremely cold and rude, which contrasts heavily with the kind conversations and greetings they give to customers who aren't POC. My fave fragrance showed out of stock, so I ordered some others A few moments later, Mariah called from the Long Beach store and asked if I'd like these gift wrapped. I said No, that's sweet, but it's a gift for myself only, no need! I asked her if she knew if my fave scent was due back in her store anytime soon. She looked it right up & said, it'll be in my store in 2 days, you want me to hold this package and send the scent when it arrives with everything else? Yes, I said!! I walked into the store on Sunday and was met with a very friendly hello. The store is filled with all sorts of adorable & fashionable things. So much too look at placed in well thought out displays to allow shoppers to see what they have without being overwhelmed by all of it. They had a great selection and of jewelry, loungewear, paper products, and cute things for your own house or to give as gifts. I get SO many complements on the wrapping when gift giving. They personalize it to the occasion too! Not only can I make a quick stop on the way to a baby shower or other event, I also order gifts online that they will hand wrap and ship. When you send a gift via amazon you always have to worry about product quality control then the very ugly impersonal "wrapping" it comes in. I love this shop! It has certainly become our favorite little shop in Belmont Shore... Often I will get cards for a variety of events - they are often hilarious and, at times, inclusive. Which is one of the reasons why we shop here. I adore their baby selection, especially their books. We can always find a book for our niece's celebrations. They usually are moral-bound and teach about acknowledging others' differences, being kind, and not being a bully. The collection is also laden with stories of real people - role models... usually females! Woot! We are (aka I am) also forever grateful that they wrap my presents for me! To be fair, my husband will tell you that I am an avid gift-wrapper in my own right. But their wrap is so adorable, precise, and done with such care! I get it done EVERY time I need a gift. One of my must-stop shops in Belmont Shores. I can buy a Mediterranean cookbook, a pair of designer jeans, an organic baby-onesie, a Bar Mitvah card, a sweater for my dog, and local custom-made jewelry if I wanted to all in one place. Blue Windows offers a strange merchandising mix but it's like walking into a store catered to one particular person, that person that you want to be. Seriously, I can't stop myself from going in every time I walk by one of their super creative merch displays, it's like my feet have minds of their own. Blue Windows is another great 2nd Street Boutique, perfect for unique gifts! Yes, there are a bunch of great trinkits for home and cute accesories, but they carry the Hooter Hider. (Please don't make that face!) The Hooter Hider is one of the most appreciated baby shower gifts for the breast feeding Mommy. You can't buy them at babies r' us and chances are it won't be on someone's registry, but it's an amazing, light weight cover for Mom's to take care of their baby without the whole world seeing some boob. They also have a great carrier that can double as a cover for feeding. As Jenny W said, the gift wrapping is gorgeous! It has taken me a couple of days to muster up the gusto, to be able to post this shocking review. Two days ago I was out looking for a thoughtful and unique gift. I wandered into Blue Windows and I stayed a while, seeing that there were many unique as well as creative gift options. As I began exploring the back corner area, I suddenly noticed the shop girl walking two random hangers to the back... Upon entering, I tried to ignore that fact that no one greeted me on my way in. Three people, including one who I recognized as the owner, were all gathered in the front, paying undivided attention to a client. So, when I saw the random hanger-drop-girl come in my direction I thought, perhaps she's going ask if I need any help or utter some form of a polite comment. No. Instead, she began to do that thing, you know the one where someone follows you around every isle in a shop. The one where you're seen as out of place and possibly a thief for possibly being just a few shades too dark... She gave me a few strange and somber smirks but no actual words, especially none that would imply a warm, accommodating welcome. Still, I saw somethings that caught my eye and no matter the case, I thought I'd give Blue Windows one last chance. So I wandered back toward the front. I literally stood right next to their counter. Still not one of them even LOOKED in my direction, much less said anything. To put the cherry on top, even when I was up front, all eyes on me, the "spy" was STILL randomly pacing and folding in the general area I was in. I left in complete shock. I was multitasking, chatting with my cousin on the other side of the country. I told her what just happened and how blatant and obvious that experience was. At first, I tried on a bit if denial, being that I was on the phone. But then I retraced my steps, remembering EVERY OTHER SHOP I'd visited, including Rite Aid, where I was properly and politely greeted. I used to pop into Blue Windows every now and then, finding some things I liked. After that heart breaking experience, I will not be back. The energy was very negative, I felt like I didn't exist and their lack of engagement made me feel like they couldn't wait until I left. So many cute knicknacks you wouldn't think that you need...and then you wind up buying them. It's the one place locally you can go to get an amazing gift for any occasion and top it with a great card. But my last two visits there have me second guessing my loyalty because the service WAS SO AWEFUL. I pop by at least once a week to satisy my gift giving/home scenting and beautifying needs. They carry one of my favorite brands of candles, Wick'd Bean, and to die for table linens by Couleur Nature. Filled with designer clothing, baby gear, stationary, unique jewelry etc... etc.. be prepared to spend a pretty penny. The feeling while shopping and goodies you bring home are well worth it! Definitely the best store on 2nd street. SO many of the other proprietors here have attitude and crappy stuff. Considering rent on 2nd street cannot be cheap, the attitude may only be a reaction to the fact that they need to sell more and more crap in order to pay rent each month. The clothes are a little pricier than what I would normally spend, but I love looking at their selection. It is always pretty diverse. The handmade bags are cute, and they have a well-selected case of jewelry. If there are any guys out there looking for a gift for their girl, it would be hard to go wrong shopping here. The staff people are friendly and low-pressure, and they are really knowledgeable about their stock.
