Beautiful hiking spot with easy to navigate trails and stunning ocean views. We were able to see Fisher's Island, Long Island, and Groton. The port-a-potties were a nice amenity too. It was a little loud due to small airplanes taking off and landing at the nearby airport but it added a layer of intrigue. There are picnic tables and plenty of spots to sit along the water. Perfect for an early spring walk. There are a few different loops that you can take. When we visited, some parts of the path were flooded. Come prepared with waterproof shoes or a clever way to get over the flooded spots. No shortage of parking spaces in the big dirt parking lot. MOST dog owners are responsibly keeping their dogs leashed in accordance with CT State Park leash requirements - but there are occasionally issues with this - just like any other place you will visit. There is a large parking lot so parking is usually not an issue - and there are multiple port-a-potties available as well. Walking/hiking the loop: amazing walk if you enjoy long ones! Definitely bring your dog along! There's a trail but my boyfriend and I decided to go the unsafe way and climb through all the rocks, which was quite fun if you're into that haha!! It was probably an hour or so each way (trail or beach walk) Fishing: definitely recommend bringing the right clothing so you aren't worried about your clothes/shoes or go off of a boat/kayak. Not too much luck from the edges! Shell hunting: if you're looking for pretty shells to take home I wouldn't recommend this place. Not many shells, mostly rocks. The reason for the 3 stars: this is a personal reason not because of the area itself! If you have bad arachnophobia like I do, do not come here lol. It's spider central! My friends and I had such an enjoyable afternoon. We need here at 10 o'clock in the morning and there was plenty of parking available. We walked the trail and made a loop around it was exactly 11,000 steps. I figured it was about 3 miles some of it was uphill I enjoyed myself very much. read more

No need to bluff... this was a great place to run! Visiting from out of town so I didn't know what to expect (hills, terrain, safety, etc.) but was pleased with the experience. Plenty of parking and an easy mobile payment option if you have to pay an out-of-state plate fee. The trail was a 3.8 mile loop with good shade. It was well maintained and easy to run on. Good mix of up and down hills but the majority of it was flat-ish. Great views where you start/end the loop. read more

We enjoyed the trails, the views of the water and the shell beaches The 3 star review is due to no bathroom facilities, just port a poty. No picnic tables. $17 fee for non Connecticut residents. A very short hike, beautiful view, dog friendly maybe it's better to go there when it's spring. It takes us about half an hour to finish the hike so whoever wants some challenges I don't recommend this place for those who want some peaceful walk near the sea, it's a great place to be. read more

Bluff Point is a nice, easy, and relaxing hike. There's a parking lot right at the entrance. You can walk along the path or venture off toward the water where the rocks are. Just be sure to plan ahead and starting heading toward the exit when it starts to get dark. Or you'll have to rely on your phones flashlight since there are no lights anywhere. I'd definitely recommend coming here if you're nearby just to get some fresh air and light exercise. Dogs and bikes are allowed too, which is definitely a bonus. read more

What a beautiful place to spend the day! We walked about a mile 1/2 through the shady woods on wide flat sandy paths out to a rocky bluff overlooking the ocean. The view was so pretty and there was a continuous light breeze to keep us cool. We meditated there and walked a mile 1/2 back. All along the trail are glimpses of the water and places to stop and put your feet in (or swim) if you like. The water is a combo of salt and fresh and much warmer than the beach in Rhode Island we visited the day before. No waves. Would be a nice place to bring kids I think but no lifeguards. LOTS of people enjoying but it didn't feel crowded, just happily bustling. Mountain bikes, joggers, people walking all kinds of dogs, families with little kids, seniors, teenagers, serious hikers, people fishing, relaxed people meandering... a real slice of life. People ride horses here as well, although we didn't see any while we were there. Because the paths are wide there's plenty of room for everyone. We observed a lot of different birds and heard a variety of birdsong. There are marshes too and I bet if you sat and watched you would see different wildlife there. If you'd like a walk outdoors it's hard to imagine a nicer one than this! read more

This has been a state park for many years and somehow, I justlearned aa put it this past summer. It's a 2.5 mile walk/ hike/bike out to the point along a very wide, mostly flat dirt path. In January it was very muddy as well on a day temperatures reached close to 50. The path is dirty so gravel nor chips help to absorb any rain or thaw. The trail to the right at the first split is the shortest route to the point and traveled along the Poquonuck River our to Long Island Sound. From the tip of the bluff, you can see 5 or more Lighthouses . Bring Binoculars! We could easily see New London Ledge Light, Race Rock Light, New London Harbor Light, Avery Point Light and a bit farther in the distancee Little Gull Island Light. That's pretty awesome! There is a pebbly/ sandy stretch of beach before the path up to the bluff, bushy Point Beach. The beginning is marked by piles of shells. Seriously think Sanibel island for 2 minutes. Most are the prolific common slipper shell; it's stilll an awesome pile! We returned to the parking lot just before sunset and caught a fabulous sunset from the rocky beach below. I am so impressed with this place! Absolutely beautiful scenery and a beautiful walk. It's about a 1 mile walk (very easy and flat) to get to the official beach but there is a water and beach view almost the entire time. The walk is shaded nicely and the path is surrounded by natural raspberry bushes. The bluffs themselves are beautiful and I loved the look of all the large rocks. I brought my pup and she loved it! We passed about 10 other dogs on the walk so it must be a popular dog spot. We also passed 2 horses! Overall, it's a beautiful place. Whether you're interested in beaching it, a picnic, hiking, kayaking, or horseback riding. Plenty of space for parking. There's even a water spigot and picnic tables near the entrance.. This place is a blast, the hiking trails are about 3 miles total. 1.5 to get to the ocean side and about 1.5 back. The view is awesome, plenty of rocks to climb on, there's a small beach with shells all over the place. Great for pictures. If you're into biking or running this place is great, the path is mostly well maintained. In the cooler days it's a nice place to get a good peaceful run in, not generally too busy, except for when their is the occasional field trip going on. read more

I feel like people who want to exercise outdoors generally fall into two categories: super fit and athletic, and casually exercising while enjoying themselves. Bluff Point is the perfect place for either group to exercise, as well as picnic, boat, fish, or splash, and all this with no park entrance fee! Bluff Point is tucked into the southern most end of Groton right next to the airport, that I also didn't know existed. There is ample parking as long as you watch out for the sizable divots in the gravel roads or bring your four wheeler. There's watercraft access for kayaks, small crafts, and rafts, and lots of places to fish. Warning does exist clearly marked that the water quality in this area is so poor that the physician general limits only one meal of fish from here every two months at the max due to the heavy metals and chemical deposits. Yikes. Pass. The big draw to Bluff Point is the walk. I found the western route best to travel down to the point, for the best waterside views, and beach access. At the end of the bluff, the expansive ocean gently laps the rocks and the view is fantastic. We preferred the eastern route to circle back to the parking lot, and saw it the road less traveled, both very cool with filtered shade, and far less people/strollers/bicyclists to maneuver around. This is the absolute perfect local spot in Groton's backyard for outdoor exercising and fun-having. They also have rotating vendors in the picnic area that sell hot dogs, lemonades, and ice creams from time to time in the summer months. I can only see this place getting more busy as the summer progresses, but this is a not to miss spot to savor new England's great outdoors. read more

Boulders water and lighthouses Bluff Point is a peninsula tucked in between the Poquonock River on the west, Mumford Cove on the east and Fisher's Island Sound toward the south. The total area is over 800 acres but the park remains difficult to find if you don't know exactly where it is. I have been coming here for more than 30 years and it really hasn't changed, still very few signs showing exactly how to find it. The best way is just to take the turn off Rt.1 right across from Dairy Queen. You then go down a little road, under a bridge, a sharp left onto a horrible dirt road and into a large parking area. Assuming you can find it, there is never a fee to park and you can enjoy the picnic areas or move on. I have kayaked, hiked, biked, and X-Country skied here and other people enjoy fishing or jogging along the many trails. Unfortunately ticks also find the area attractive and are extremely abundant in the grass and bushes. If you are willing to walk a bit you will come across two great, virtually unused beaches The first is usually called Bluff Point Beach and the second even more isolated is Bushy Point Beach, which ends at Bushy Point and Pine Island. If you continue walking you will end up at the edge of Fisher's Island Sound and have access to incredible views of both the water, several lighthouses and some gigantic glacial boulders. Bluff Point is a great place to visit any time of the year and no matter how many times I go there I never get tired of it. read more

Such a great park for walking/biking trail. It's a 3.59mi loop and it's nice and wide, mostly flat. My 6yo rode his bike on the whole loop today so it's not difficult. There is tons or parking and launches for kayaks and canoes. It's a perfect place to sit at a picnic table and eat lunch or just stroll along the shoreline. This place just brings me peace, so close to downtown Groton yet so tranquil. A park for everyone so bring the kids and the pets and enjoy nature. The only thing that for me doesn't give it 5 stars is the entrance is hard to find if it's your first time. But for people that grew up in the vicinity, we all know. Second thing is that they need a trail map with mileage. Folks need to know how far they are walking or have walked, mile markers on trail. read more

We accidentally stumbled upon this park after passing up the known popular State Beach/Parks of Hammonassett and Rocky Neck. Those are the type that crowds go to every weekend to lay on the sand, swim in salt water, or camp in the wooded areas, have acres of parking for a substantial fee. We saw this park on a map and since it is on a small peninsula, surrounded by water, train tracks and across from a small recreational airport, we did not expect much. We were quite surprised to see a wonderful wooded hilly area with a cute little fishing beach, kayakers on the water and a mountain bike event going on. The New England Mountain Bike Association had sponsor demo tents and maps for riding the fire roads and single track through the whole park, geared for serious adult riders as well as small children. It looked like so much fun. There were about 100 cars in the dirt parking lot, nearly all with bike racks, empty, still full or being unloaded. Yet as we wandered around the park, it did not appear crowded at all. Everyone was so nice and having a great time. If I had appropriate clothes with me, I might have even been able to ride a demo bike, though I did not see any quite small enough. But, oh, did I wish I had my little Gary Fisher Tassajara with me. read more

We had an atypically warm fall day a couple of weeks ago (in the mid-70s), and I really wanted to spend the day outside. I wanted to enjoy the fall colors, but I also wanted to go to the beach (because who doesn't love being able to say they were at the beach in October?). So I searched for places where I could both hike and enjoy the ocean, and found Bluff Point State Park. Win-win! The place is absolutely beautiful. It has wide, open paths for bikers and hikers to share, as well as offshoot paths that go into the woods if you're looking for more of a hike than a walk. You have gorgeous views of the water while walking through the woods. There's also an airport across the water, so you can see planes taking off. Across the water it's a bit industrial, but between the water and the woods you can get your share of enjoying what nature has to offer. The beach area that I stopped at had more rocky sand than fine sand, but it was still warm and actually pretty comfortable on your feet. There were a lot of shells washed ashore, but I'm guessing that was due to the time of year. The water was really clean - I actually did go swimming and you could see straight down to the bottom. It was cold, but immensely enjoyable after hiking! It's nice to have the opportunity to take a dip! The park is dog friendly, and there are places for picnics, as well as a couple of bathrooms. Lots of picture taking opportunities. This is a great place if you want the potential to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. read more

The road entering the park is a rutted mess. You walk out and back on a gravel path to a view that isn't terribly scenic. Not really a place to commune with nature. I love how they labeled an ordinary boulder "Sunset Rock". I don't have kids or a dog so I guess this isn't a place for me. read more

For the amount of people that visit they do a great job on the upkeep. I love seeing the locals who are there every day too! We come from really far away and this is by far one of my favorite spots. I like Bluff Point state park because it's an easy hike with a guaranteed 10,000 steps if you complete the full loop. It's a great hike to bring your dog on and there's a beach area half way around where you can find shells or play fetch. Approximately halfway too is Bluff Point. It's a great place to stop for a picnic or just to take in the view. If you time it right, you can catch a lovely sunset. Just bring a flashlight for the hike back in the dark. In the summertime, you'll want to take precautions for insects (long sleeves or bug repellant). It's also ideal for mountain biking. Just yesterday I saw several bikers with huskies hauling them up the hill as if they were sled dogs. I only gave 4 stars because the parking lot and a section of the road leading to the lot is in very poor condition. Drive slowly to navigate around the potholes. Take a water bottle. One is enough regardless of the season but two would be better. Bring a bag for your garbage and clean up after your dog. You need to take your garbage with you when you drive away. Don't be a jerk (some losers leave their waste bag tossed somewhere in the park or the lot). read more

We really like this beach. It's a little bit of a walk, but the path is wide and fairly level. Bicycles and strollers are able to manage with no difficulty. The beach itself is never crowded. I don't even know how I could begin to describe the beauty of Bluff Point State Park, you seriously just have to experience it yourself. Walkers/Hikers/Bikers: Seriously look around you and take in every moment, it is such a beautiful park. Whatever you do, continue until you get to the point, it's literally awe-inspiring and if you can spend some time on the rocks. I would advise sneakers or hiking shoes, but walking around on the rocks and exploring was really fun. There are some overgrown trails but there are normally clearer ones close by so don't worry. Beaching it: This is not your typicle beach, but I would totally hang here. The beach itself full of shells not sand which looks really cool, but is not so good on your feet so I do recommend that you bring some sort of water shoes. Dog people: It is super dog friendly. They can walk/hike with you and they are allowed to swim. If I had my dogs with me they would have loved it. Oh and there are bathrooms, I personally didn't partake but I always like to know whether or not a park has them. On a sad note..there was a bit of litter, water bottles, cans, chip bags. Love. Love. Love. I have been going to Bluff Point ever since I adopted my first rescue pup about 8 years ago. During the summer I was looking for a "beach"/hike that the dogs could also enjoy. All it took was a quick google search and we found Bluff Point. There are many reasons I love Bluff Point and they are as follows: Huge parking lot Multiple bathrooms - one at the beginning and in the middle of the trail Variety of terrain Beach access, even some areas that seem more "private" where you can play fetch with your dog. This place a little of everything. You can bike, run, hike, swim, kayak, or just take in the beautiful sights. While the road in and the parking lot are a little rough, it's nothing that slowing down and watching out for holes can't fix. There are bathrooms both at the parking lot and at the beach, something that I wasn't expecting. and while the bathroom was a little on the smelly side, it was cleaner than I thought it would be, and I appreciated having it there as an option because it gave us an opportunity to spend more time checking out the park. We walked all the way along the beach to the point and with our water shoes (thanks for the tip fellow yelpers) were able to cross the short shallow pass to the island abutting the beach. The water was crisp, refreshing, and surprisingly not salty. After reading one of the signs about the history and terrain of the park, we assumed that the lack of salt was because of the river that flowed nearby. This is something that made the park even cooler. It was pretty easy to climb over the rocks along the shore and look out on the sailboats and Fisher Island, which is actually in NY. How cool it is to be in CT near RI and be able to see NY in the distance. Overall, I had a wonderful day at Bluff Point and I can't wait to come back and check out some of the side trails that I bypassed this time. read more

Wonderfully maintained trail is wide, not a lot of rocks to trip on, good for beginners and very rewarding with a variety of interesting sites. Geology buffs: The point is gorgeous and reminded me of someplace where a pilgrim might land. Lots of cool quartz lumps and strips running along majestic rock cliffs. Lots of little paths to explore the cliffs. History buffs: Sunset rock along the loop is worth a look, and used to be the Sunday sermon spot back in ye olde days. An old foundation, well, and stone walls are remains of 1600s home! So cool. A nice crowd on Saturday, racially diverse, some walking, some running, some bikes, some dogs. read more
