The Birkey is different, however. Unlike the other pubs, it seems to hold the young crowd in high esteem and whilst they do have the usual straggle of regulars sitting at the bar every night, the pub is generally always busy with younger folk. The pub itself is rather large in size, offering ample space for all its drinkers, as well as a small outdoor area for the smokers or brave amongst you. The drinks are pretty reasonable in price and there are also a fair few different lagers and ales to choose your tipple of choice from. The atmosphere isn't too rowdy or loud either, unlike in some of the local bars that cater mainly to the younger crowd; The Birkey just seems to get the right mix of young and old in there. Its location as one of the first pubs as you walk into Crosby village from Blundellsands train station also certainly helps its popularity with me (it's also a shorter walk/stumble to the station after a few).

I was therefore expecting loads of guest ales, traditional features and old man with his dog that nobody was sure was still alive but topped up his pint any way. Nope none of these. It was bit bland in fact. I imagine that on a sunny day for anyone visiting the nearby beach this will be perfect stop on their way from the sands but there was little keep us there once we had slaked our thirst.

Looking at it from the outside, The Marine pub looks like it belongs in an episode of 'Last of the…read moreSummer Wine' or something and indeed whenever I walk past, elderly couples and friends always seem to be bussing in and out of the place. Inside, the pub is quite pleasantly decorated, with a range of seating providing a comfy setting for you to enjoy a refreshing pint after a walk on the front. During the week, The Marine also has meal deal on, offering two meals for less than ten pounds which represents great value for money. The food itself is traditional pub food and is fairly tasty but at the price you can't really argue anyway. Their selection of draught lagers and ales isn't particularly extensive but they're also not very pricey. Swings and roundabouts, really. Nevertheless, despite the issue with the beer, The Marine is a lovely place to go for a spot of lunch or a pint or two after taking in the sights walking along the marina

One of my few gripes about Formby is that there is no pub called The Formby (or at least if there is, I haven't found it yet). This pub, situated on the main road, has a lovely traditional design both on the outside and inside which is complimented well by a variety of indoor and outdoor seating. Indeed, the area at the front of the pub is a lovely place to sit in during our British summers, on one of those days when the sun comes out (the bit just before everyone complains about it being too hot because they've got burnt). The prices in there are pretty reasonable and the atmosphere is always friendly and quite lively. The weekly quiz night is a popular one for my friends and I to venture to midweek (maybe something to do with the free butties halfway through) and although I'm not a regular on the Crosby village scene, for me The Crosby is one of the better places to go for a pint when I'm there, especially in summer.

There's lots of wood and soft seat benches and of course, a huge bar. The Crosby tends to attract a really friendly sociable clientele and I used to enjoy a few drinks in here. I have not visited since the renovation following the fire, and should go back again!
