Stephen Blyth is now a licensed home inspector and a Realtor with Keller Williams Coastal Realty. I pity the person who trusts this individual with making the largest financial decision of their life. Why would anybody trust this individual who has been reported many times here and other various review and social media sites for poor workmanship, taking money for projects and not completing them and stiffing multiple sub-contractors? I agree with the other two reviewers who said they'd like to give negative stars. We hired Blyth Builders to work on our house doing some pretty basic jobs a few years ago. We ended up firing them and finishing the work ourselves due to many of the same issues mentioned in the other reviews: poor workmanship, taking too much money up front for things that were not completed when they were supposed to be (and we never got the money we overpaid back), really messy while doing the work and then not cleaning up properly, and poor communication once we expressed concerns about the work. I found out today that a builder is responsible for up to 8 years to correct a problem due to poor construction. I called Steve Blyth about a construction problem and he refused to make it right. read more

There is no reason to ever hire this person. He should have his business license revoked and reported to the better business bureau for each and every project he has taken money for but never completed. I can't say enough bad things to discourage you from hiring blyth. He's awful and unprofessional on a good day. read more

I wish I had read these comments before I hired Blyth Builders. I had similar negative experiences with delays and excuses as to why the work wasn't done. Fortunately I was able to halt the work before the framing began. However it took a month to remove the dumpster because Mr Blyth hadn't paid the dumpster bill even though we had paid Mr Blyth. I had asked Mr Blyth numerous times for the invoices for the work done. He simply typed up a sheet of paper with Contractors and wages paid. I was able to obtain some of the invoices. I had obtained two positive references before hiring Blyth Builders, but they must have been from some time ago. I did have to consult an attorney, but never had to proceed with litigation. I would not recommend Blyth Builders. read more

We would also give negative stars if possible. Five of them. Our experience with Blyth Builders was identical with the highly negative posts in this string: Thank you Lucretia, Nidhi, and Kendall for your comments. We had to terminate our contract with Blyth Builders because our 1700 square foot house construction project had only progressed as far as rough inspection after 8 months - the scheduled completion date had long passed. Mr. Blyth (and his references that we contacted) indicated his very capable son ran the company's full time crew. We learned after the project started that his son had left to start his own business, and there was no full time crew - the framing / siding contractors were a revolving door of individuals of varying skill. Weeks of good summer weather went by with barely measurable progress. Mr. Blyth consistently requested payment for elements of the contract that were not yet complete. There was always an excuse for lack of progress. Several gross framing dimensional issues were found such that they had to be redone, adding time to the already late schedule. The quality of much of the work was generally poor, such that the subsequent (and very competent) General Contractor we hired to replace Blyth Builders had to re-do and repair much of the interior framing, exterior siding, and roof work. The surface of a roof deck had to be reconstructed. The roof and siding leaked. A single 6-tread string of stairs, for which the framing was supposedly complete, literally collapsed under some visiting contractors the week after we terminated Blyth Builders. These items and several others were rectified at our very substantial cost. We learned of five instances where contractors were not paid, even though we / our bank had paid him for their work, and he had signed affidavits indicating the subcontractors had been paid. In fact, we received warnings from four of the subcontractors threatening mechanic's liens on our property because Blyth Builders hadn't paid them. read more

If I could rate this company with negative stars I would. And after my negative experience I searched public court records, apparently I am not the only one who had issues with this company. First the owner took more than half the cost of the job up front. He refused to provide a cost breakdown showing materials and labor until AFTER i fired him. He refused to provide a contract or timeline until over a month into the project and threats of firing. He was VERY VERY rude. At one point ignoring our phone calls and once picking up to say he would not answer my boyfriends calls because "he did not like him". He was "working" on our apartment over 7 weeks and only accomplished the initial demo. He work was shotty and even after I fired him I had to hire a new electrician to redo the mistakes and a new carpenter to remove the work the first guy did and finish the job right. After firing Blyth he refused to return our money and has since claimed we owe him alot more! He is demanding pretty much the entire cost of the job he did not do. Not recommended! Uses poor quality, unreliable subcontractors; Work was poorly supervised at best, resulting in many deficiencies on our roof reinstallation that had to be corrected by another subcontractor. Workers often showed up late or not at all. We as homeowners took over control of purchasing materials and paying sub's, as we did not trust Blyth Builders with our money any more. I agree with the other review - I would give them negative if I could. Steve the owner is all about collecting money and he will try to collect more upfront. We missed all milestone dates - not unusual for a large project but it was by months. He took money for ordering stuff and never ordered which delayed deliveries. There was stuff he did just to meet a milestone and collect money though later on I realized it was either not a good idea to try and do some things earlier or things weren't really done though they appeared to be. I ended up firing him and hiring a new plumber, electrician, carpenter. We found a lot of issues with what his people had done. I spent money getting his stuff cleaned up, getting new permits and after more than 10 months I am just about getting done with my project. Meanwhile I also found he had not paid some subcontractors and companies he ordered equipment from like the storage pod and the dumpster. If you are looking for a general contractor I would say stay away from blyth builders. read more

Not recommended...in short, lack of adequate supervision, poor follow-thru, payment schedule requires too much upfront with too little money at the end of the job to correct the multiple problems and unfinished punchlist items that remained. We hired Blyth Builders (essentially a one-person company) in the Fall of 2015 to insulate and re-roof our house, install 19 new windows, and to reside it with Hardiplank. The job began in late October with the roof somewhat hastily completed. Later we noticed several deficiencies (lack of roof overhang, uneven lines, poor chimney reflashing, and covering up a bathroom duct) which were not addressed until the following Spring (we still do not have a connected bathroom duct). The rest of the job then resumed with a different subcontractor who was worried about getting paid by Blyth Builders since he was not paid in full on a prior job. We took control of the payment process in order to alleviate the sub's and our concerns. The whole process has been agonizingly slow, with many punch list items still not completed 9 months later (July 2016). I do NOT recommend this contractor. read more
