My New Year's resolution was to eat more hole foods... So there I was again, January 2nd, buying out almost everything this place had. We had been going to the other location on Polk St. for awhile now and always stuck with their blueberry cake donuts, cake crumb donuts (chef's kiss), and apple fritters. We recently moved closer to this Baker St. location and now drop by every few weeks for something completely different and 100x's better - THE CRONUT. Their delicious croissant donut.... I always scoop up all of the horchata cronuts when they have them. I seriously cannot express how good that horchata cronut is. Think soft, buttery churro icing layered over an airy croissant made out of yeast donut layers. Magical. Tantalizing. Absolutely scrumptious. Not sure how I've never reviewed any of the Bob's Donuts locations yet! I've been a couple of times now, but haven't been back for a while. This is the first time I've seen this location on Baker Street. They weren't busy around 7:30pm on a Saturday, but they had already sold out of a few items (such as the apple fritters), but there was still a good variety available. I ended up trying: -Custard Malasada ($3.50): Not that great, but I'm also not a big fan of malasadas in general. The malasada was fairly light, but didn't have much flavor. Also, the custard filling was a bit too sweet- skip! -Mango Malasada ($3.50): Also not that great, and I didn't like the fake mango flavor. It's been a while since I stopped by Bob's, and on a recent trip out of town, I finally had the chance to pick up a few donuts. I was hankering for some sugar twists, but boy did I get some garbage, overcooked and left out donuts. These should be some of the easiest donuts to make, so not sure how I got hard crusted, goopy sugared staleness from them, but I ended up having to just toss the whole box as they weren't edible. I typically go for my tried and true: the plain old fashioned. Not too sweet, crunchy on the outside, soft and firm on the inside. There was one time when their old fashioned donut was old and stale. Today I also went for a raspberry jelly filled donut. I was asked plain, glazed, or chocolate? I chose plain because donuts are usually already sweet, I don't need them sweeter. The cashier was rude and surly. She went to get the donuts and muttered something while putting the donuts into the bag and placed it on the counter. Bob's is the best! No frills, nothing too crazy - just a solidly good donut. A lot of places that do yeasty donuts end up with varieties that are just fluff and air, but not Bob's. It's tender and buttery, but still has a good chewiness to it. Plus it's also not too sweet which I really like. My hands down favorite is the Apple Fritter which is a GIANT. I especially love love LOVE the generous amount of cinnamon apple pieces scattered throughout. This time I also went tried the mango chili donut and guava malasada. Both were delish! The mango chilo had a delicious mango glaze and the sprinkling of tajin gave it a nice little extra kick. Totally enjoyed it! The guava malasada was pillowy soft and generously filled with a very fragrant guava jelly. Yum! So good! We bought an old fashioned for my dad and he liked it but he thought it was on the sweet side. He doesn't have a big sweet tooth though. Donuts in San Francisco don't get any better than that of Bob's Donuts, as their location on Polk Street in the city's Nob Hill neighborhood has been a local institution since opening the 1960's as they have recently been best known for their Big Donut Challenge in which you can win your money back and a T-shirt for eating a massive donut in two minutes or less! If course, I was here not gorge myself on one large donut, but many donuts in fact, as I was headed to dinner on nearby Divisadero Street and needed a little tokens of appreciation for those who were hosting me, and of course a little deep fried treat for myself. This second location of Bob's Donuts, which opened a mere three years ago, on the appropriately named Baker Street in the former home of the bakery that was known Chili Pies Baking Co. serves as the perfect place for revelers in both the nearby Alamo Square neighborhood and North of Panhandle neighborhood that Bob's Donuts resides in. Just getting to this second location can be a challenge as parking in this heavily residential neighborhood turned out to difficult but not impossible, as by the time I arrived by 6 p.m. on the weekday evening that I intended to have dinner with my party, they are some local spots available after 6 p.m. Thankfully this location is open until 9 p.m., which makes it nice for this late evening snack, but not like it's sister shop, which is open 24 hours, seven days a week. Upon entry, it's a real no frills operation at this location of Bob's Donuts, as there are three cases of the donuts they still have available, along with their register, a coffee station, a dairy station for said coffee, a microwave, lots of shirts and mugs with the Bob's logo on them of course, and lots and lots of pink cardboard boxes ready to be filled with crispy yet still moist donuts. The only challenging thing was in deciding which donuts I wanted to feast on and which donuts I thought my dinner dates would enjoy as well. After looking at all of my options, as so many of them looked so wonderful and so-high end considering the average price for donuts at Bob's Donut's is a mere 3 dollars. The first thing I did was to ask their counter personnel if I could get nine total donuts packaged in three different boxes and when they said I could I knew which donuts I wanted for myself. They included Strawberry Shortcake Donut, Creme Brûlée Donut, and one of their signature donuts, their powdered donuts filled with raspberry jelly. For my friends, I went for the most visually appealing, which included their Maple Bacon Donut, S'mores Donut, Matcha Chocolate Donut, and their other signature powdered donut that was filled with lemon jelly. My total bill for my nine donuts was a little under 30 dollars before tip, which considering the variety of donuts with the amount of ingredients layered on top of each of them, wasn't too bad, all things considered. When I brought the two extra boxes to dinner, my friends began fighting over which box of donuts they each got to bring home as the S'mores Donut was so festive as it had a caramelized marshmallow right in the middle of the donut, which no doubt made it extra fun. After returning home, I made sure to dive into my Strawberry Shortcake Donut, and in a word, it was amazing as it wasn't too sweet thanks to the amount of creme and strawberries. It truly resembled a beautiful Strawberry Creme Puff, but with a donut replacing the puff pastry. I loved all of the donuts I purchased for myself, with the one caveat being as with any donut you really do need to eat your donuts as soon as your purchase them as they tend to age pretty fast. My Creme Brûlée with it beautifully caramelized topping held out as long as they could, but by day three, it was no longer the same, which is okay, because with donuts you can still can enjoy them no matter what. Although their namesake Bob may no longer be around to see the fruits of his labor, I am so glad that owner Aya Ahn and her family have the foresight to continue their expansion further into the city of San Francisco. Here's to Bob's Donuts on Baker Street continued success and additional locations of Bob's Donuts and Pastries opening in San Francisco and beyond, because we all know a delicious thoughtfully created donut is hard to find, but not at Bob's Donut's they're not! read more

Picture it a simple jelly style donut topped with a slice of white melted cheese dusted with poppy and sesame seeds, dried garlic and sea salt (like an Everything but the bagel seasoning) and filled with a smooth and creamy chive cheese. I've been craving an apple fritter for months and finally went out to get it. I'm an occasional visitor to (and fan of) Bob's in Nob Hill and didn't even know about this location. Thanks, Yelp! I hate lines, but this moved pretty quickly. It felt safe and clean inside and they're not taking cash right now. I ended up getting these: -Apple fritter: Solid choice. Classic with plenty of apple and cinnamon, good outer texture, and not greasy or solid in the middle like some out there. -Glazed old fashioned: As advertised! More rugged texture than you see usually, which is a plus for holding all that sweet glaze. -Guava Malasada: I love guava and the filling is tasty, but it was just a tiny squirt in one half of the donut. It doesn't need tons of filling, but I'd have preferred if they could've made it a little more even. The donut itself was tasty and airy with a light chew. -Savory sun-dried tomato and cream cheese: There was almost too much filling in the one I got, but it's flavorful, creamy, and light-textured. The cheese and sesame seeds on top add more than just looks, too. Putting this filling in a donut instead of like...on toast is overkill, but that's sort of the point. Unlike the original Bob's Donuts on Polk, this new outpost has very little donut variety but is 100X cleaner with a welcoming, sunlit-filled dining room and hardwood floors.
