As my friend Maruxinha would say, it's like getting a free dinner! Cafeteria Maracaibo was one of our first stops on our bar/ tapas hop for the evening. It is conveniently located along the Praza de Compostela, which is very close to all of Vigo's most happening discos and clubs, and therefore makes the cafeteria an attractive place for a low-key drink or bite to eat before dancing the night away. It's also a fantastic place for people-watching; Vigueses (the proper term for people from Vigo) young and old stroll along the plaza for a relaxing evening walk on a beautiful summer day. If the weather is nice, definitely make it a point to be seated outside on the plaza! All we ordered were a few glasses of Albarino; the food that was brought with our drinks was so substantial that it was absolutely unnecessary to order from the regular menu. We were presented with a large basket of fresh bread (and Galician bread is the best there is in the world...I get so hungry just thinking about the crackly crust and the airy and fluffy interior) and each of us received a substantially sized plate of ternera gallega (some of the highest quality beef/ veal from the region) prepared in a red wine and onion sauce. It was a little overcooked and maybe not the best pairing with a glass of white wine, but it was just the fuel we needed to get us through an evening of fun and dancing. Our waiter was your typical man-of-few words Galician guy; he wasn't overly friendly, but he was always to-the-point and there when you needed him.

When I tell my friends and family how incredible Spain is and because the stories cannot do some of these cities and pueblos justice, I'll bring back some sort of gift from where I used to live (in the Pontevedra province of Galicia) - this way, everyone can live vicariously through the gifts and stories. Usually, but not always, this takes the form of wine or orujo [1] - and thank goodness for Mantequerias Arjeriz! The wine selection, especially for wines from Galicia (the appellations that are most commonly sold are Rias Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, and Ribeiro), is of very good quality. Whenever I need to bring back premium wine (okay, I've brought back Don Simon, the cheapest of wines and definitely not sold here, for a friend also) or food that is very characteristic of Galicia (sweets such as tarta de Santiago or cooking ingredients such as grelos - these are special greens that are difficult to find outside of Galicia and are used to make caldo Gallego, a very typical soup/ stew of the region), I'll head to Mantequerias Arjeriz because it is a one-stop shop and everything is artisanal. You're not going to find your Carrefour [2] tarta de Santiago here - you'll find a cake that is produced by a family-owned bakery with a shop that is just a few steps away from the cathedral. The store itself is beautiful; all of the shelving is of a dark-colored wood and the counter to purchase charcuterie and cheese is very neatly organized. I am also a huge pain and ask for all of the boxes to be gift-wrapped individually, which the shopkeeper always does without complaining. So until I can take everyone to Spain with me, a little gift will have to do... They had quite a few options for people who can't eat gluten as well, like yogurt with muesli and gluten free bread with multiple spread options. I ordered the yogurt, gluten free bread with hummus and olive spread, café con leche, and a fresh squeezed juice with pineapple, strawberry, apple, lemon, and celery.
