Very nice instructors, modern equipment but very expensive for the number of services included in the fee.

Located all throughout the city, and country, this local chain is where I get my run on. While every location offers a little something different, this particular Leblon outpost is pretty tiny, so if you go during the morning or after-work rush, you may find yourself waiting for a cardio or weight machine. What I do like is the new and high quality equipment that you'll find. The upstairs area is where the weights and loads of people are located. It's usually pretty hard to find even a small area for stretching and you'll have to jump in between reps if you want to get on a machine. Then again, if you can go during off hours, you'll likely have a better experience. Because of convenience and cost (just R$69 a month), I choose this gym.

I came here to work out and was a bit shocked by the cost at first; however, Bodytech contracts private trainers to correct and/or point out how to use their machines better at no extra charge. The cost of this free service is built into the gym membership so it makes it easier to swallow. They also have private trainers for hire for one on one attention. Very nice and nice looking clientele makes it a pleasure to work out here.

It's not cheap). They have a wide range of classes and I regularly go to spinning, functional training, and some of the many abs/glutes focused classes. The only one I haven't liked is yoga because I thought it was boring. I also use the pool which is clean - only complaint is it's a little small (2 wide lanes) and the hours for open swim are limited due to classes going on. Another nice feature is that there are always trainers in the weights areas who you can meet with in the beginning without extra cost to get started on a training plan, and ask advice from anytime about your form or new exercises. I pre-paid for a year membership since I knew I was staying, but the gym also offers shorter-term options if you're only in Rio for a little while, and they're willing to negotiate on those.

It's just a great place to stay fit, and stay happy.

But the kiosk where you get a day membership wasn't working. So ask the guy at the front desk if I can give him cash/credit card/ etc. He calls over some trainer who says "no you can't come in...the machine is broken. Go to another one of our gyms." LOL. May I suggest replacing the staff with individuals who take money... or maybe replace them with turnstyles? What a messed up place.

I've been searching for a studio to practice pilates and Phyx has everything I need. The first…read moreclass I took was free and I loved it. Within the loft studio, you can find all the apparatuses used in the pilates method: the reformer, trapeze, cadillac, tower, barrel, etc. Each class has a maximum of 5 students and so the time you get with the instructor is very individualized. The classes book up quickly and there isn't a ton of available slots, so if you can manage a time with Jean I highly recommend him. He's super attentive, very focused and high energy during the 1-hour class and specializes the exercises based on your needs. If you're looking to strengthen, straighten, gain flexibility or rehabilitate, pilates is the best way to improve your posture, lean out your torso and give you flat abs ;) Go to Phyx!
This is an excellent yoga studio here in Copacabana. I believe they also have a studio in Botofogo…read more If you are a Bikram yogi already, you will love this place. The studio is almost brand-new, so it is clean, bright, and very well designed. The heat is pretty evenly distributed throughout the room, but the front and back rows are a tiny bit cooler because of the way the heaters work. The teachers here are all very good. Some of them will give you individual attention, but the general trend is not to focus too much on individuals. If you are working on something specific, however, talk to the instructor before the class begins, and they will be more than happy to come and give you some attention during the class. Most of the classes are taught in Portuguese, but there are a few taught in English. The instructors all speak English however, so if you're missing the cue, they'll tell you in English. If you usually practice in the US or other less humid climates, I would suggest bringing more water than you usually do. The humidity here in Rio is a real challenge. Prices are in line with other Bikram studios around the world. R$50 for one class. They also have unlimited weekly, monthly, and yearly packages as well as 10-time passes.

The studio is on the 2nd floor and is sharing the floor with what looks like a MMA Or some type of martial arts studio. I walked in to find a class just beginning. The instructor, Juliana greated me with a "Olá, bom Dia!" And a smile which put me at ease a bit. I told her I didn't speak much Portuguese and she said it a ok and ushered me toward a nice girl who did! Thank goodness! She explained the warmup and WOD with great detail and always made sure to check if I was following. The WOD was perfect since I hadn't worked out since staring my vacation! The drop in fee was $50R (Reise) but that's like $16.50USD. Not bad! I always purchased a shirt to mark the occasion. To get there, have a taxi/uber drive you to the Vidigal favela entrance on Avenue Niemeyer (about 10 mins from Copacabana). At the entrance, you will see a group of motorbikes. Ask one of them to drive you to the trailhead. It will cost you 5 BRL. The motorbike drops you off at a football field. Cross the field and you will see the trailhead. We had just hiked Machu Picchu before arriving to Rio, so our legs were already pretty beat. Maybe this hike is easier than it felt for us, but by the time we reached the peak, our leg muscles were feeling the burn. The first half of the hike is fairly easy. You'll be in the shade for the most part and it's an easy, steady climb. The second half gets harder, steeper, and you'll be in the blazing sun. Be sure to pack plenty of water and sunscreen. At the half way point there is a local guy selling water and frozen acai. It's a nice treat as it is HOT outside and the frozen acai tastes great! Once you reach the top, you'll be greeted with some of the best views in all of Rio. You can see Copacabana, Ipanema, Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, and some surrounding favelas. We stayed at the top for about 20-30 minutes before heading back down. Descending is much easier, however, can be slippery due to a lot of loose sand. If you enjoy hiking, Dois Irmaos is a fantastic climb in Rio de Janeiro.
