The facilities are brilliant, with warm showers and lockers, although you will need a padlock (padlocks can be bought in the gym). The actual equipment is great, the gym boasts high-end machines and free weights. The staff, all of whom are qualified personal trainers, are very friendly and do a good job of manning what can be a very busy gym. This brings us to the downside and the reason for awarding 4 starts instead of 5. When a gym offers such a good price, it inevitably becomes very crowded at certain times of the day. Generally this isn't a problem, particularly when working on your cardio, but some pieces of equipment are limited and very popular, meaning you may find yourself disappointed, that or queuing for a period of time, but don't expect the person occupying that equipment to care very much about your needs. It's common place to see one person hogging certain pieces of equipment, just yesterday, one person took over the smith machine for an hour, but also dominated ALL the available weight plates, rendering other bits of equipment useless. To fully enjoy the use of The Gym Plymouth, you may have to carefully plan when you will attend, not completely the fault of the gym, but perhaps they should invest in more of the popular equipment to cut down on members' frustration. All in all, I highly recommend The Gym Plymouth, it's a brilliant environment to train in and there's plenty of help on offer for those who feel they need it to achieve their fitness goals.

As a student, the price is ideal and for what I want it for, I couldn't ask for any more. Locker facilities are good with plenty of space (though a padlock is required) and both changing rooms are spacious. I am predominantly a runner and the treadmills are very versatile and, if you are lucky enough to have a flexible schedule, you can almost be certain you'll be able to use them without any wait or queueing. There are staff around to help, though you don't feel pressured or feel like you're being judged. It can get busy (particularly in the weekday afternoons) though it is well suited to those who like early morning exercise, being 24/7 allowing you to go in as early (or late) as you like. Overall, a great place to have a workout, though if you are a post-work gym goer, expect a wait for some of the facilities (in particular the weight machines and free weights).

The pilates studio is quite small and you seem to have to book early to get in to the classes. Changing rooms could definitley be better. Staff are very friendly and helpful. This spa is lovely, I now regularly request gift vouchers for there from my friends and family…read more Firstly the staff are really friendly and set you completely at ease, something which is essential considering you can be in various states of undress. They always create a really relaxing mood by dimming lights and playing soothing music so you can totally relax and forget about the world whilst you are having your treatment. Nothing is too much trouble at all and while your are there, you are given there undivided attention at all times. Some rooms have there own private showers so after your treatment you dont have to leave them room to clean yourself and dress again. They have a wide assortment of prodcuts you can buy to recreate the treatments at home but there is no hard sale at all infact they are not mentioned unless you ask. The spa is very modern inside and very clean and tidy and the staff are all immaculately dressed and presented. A really lovely experience and one I will hopefully experience again for many more years to come.

They teach a variety of styles in the gym including thai boxing, western boxing, kick boxing and MMA. This gym started off in Pitts in the university grounds, but with a growing following it branched out in early 2001 to Mutley where it has blossomed. A threat of a new gym opening close by has put pressure on the club but hopefully the loyal following this gym has will keep it going.
