After working with him for nearly ten years, we knew this, like every other project would go over the estimated price. However, we are in disbelief that a four month project is just a shell after more than a year. Matt has had one guy building the house, who got here promptly at 7:30 every day. Matt would arrive between 8:00 and 9:00. He would often get here and then make an hour or more run for supplies, leaving the one guy to build alone. Then he would come back, take a break and almost always leave early. When we asked for more guys, he agreed it would be more efficient but never bothered to follow through. When changes to the project would come up and a price requested the answer was always, "not much" or "shouldn't take long", etc. When it was clear the "estimate" was useless, we cut back on the size of the project to focus on getting at least a part of it complete. Seven months later nothing is complete. My home is destroyed, it has had two bathrooms and the furnace removed. We now have no heat and no downstairs bathroom. We have a hole to the basement where the bathroom once was. When the bathroom was removed he said it would be a few days to get the new one installed. One would think that meant it would have walls and a door very soon. After more than two months, I voice my concerns about him slow rolling, mismanaging the project and my drained bank account and he packs up and leaves because his feelings are hurt! He has now been paid enough to have the entire project complete and he is refusing finish any of it. We paid him hundreds of thousands of dollars and he completely bailed on us. I will say he has done quality, although overpriced work but, he cannot manage or budget. He has no regard for your finances. He won't tell you what you're paying for. He won't give you a quote, and getting an "estimate" is useless or ridiculous. He just gives you invoices for "time and materials". I gave him an amazing reference to a woman in Marlborough, I heard he did the same thing to her. I heard, "she was annoying, always asking for prices". He laughed when we were talking about her saying "she wants me to come back, I told her no". She was a nice lady. It is sad that you can know people for so long before you truly understand the quality of their character. Don't get scammed. They will bleed you dry, then run away.
