And I mean that quite literally. From Kings Heath's infamous York Road, you must find the humble signage and walk through the the alley of greenery before you get to the garden area of the Cafe. The website calls it an "Oasis of calm" and you know what? It really is. With a feel of a conservatory in the garden rather than a restaurant; this place is rustic in all the right ways. I chose to sit inside the cafe (as the weather couldn't decide what it was doing) and sat by the large glass windows which look out onto the green garden area. I popped to the counter to order a filter coffee (a very reasonable £1.65), but they had run out at the time. "Not a problem", said my friendly server "I'll whip you up an Americano for the same price". Now that's service! The coffee was good too. Fragrant and not bitter, it certainly hit the spot! All of the staff I encountered during my visit were friendly, smiley and helpful. There was a lovely vibe in the venue and several different groups were enjoying a spot of food or a nice coffee whilst I was in there. Some people were (like me) clearly doing a spot of work, some people were taking the opportunity to have a good catch up with friends and some brave souls were sitting outside and celebrating a birthday. I didn't eat on this visit, but I intend to go back and give it a go at some point. The food that I saw looked delicious and defiantly warranted another trip to KH. I can't give this place 5 stars (as I haven't fully tried all that it has to offer), but if the menu is as good as it looks - it might get bumped up in the future. Just as a note, it does offer WiFi - but the connectivity wasn't strong (no biggie, I just tethered off my phone). I thoroughly recommend a trip here for a spot of dinner or a relaxed drink with friends.

We had a server come to our table to take our drink and food order, which is a nice option instead of being at the mercy of the bartender. We started with a round of margaritas. I thought they were delicious, but my company thought they needed more tequila. We had 3 tapas dishes: mussels, butternut squash and feta, and some lightly fried halloumi cheese. The food came out quickly and was very fresh. No heat lamps here! My main was a mushroom and hallioumi burger with a side of chips. As you can see, I love halloumi. The burger was good but I wish there was more cheese and less mushroom. The dessert menu was not much as they only had two options the night we dined. It has a great cocktail menu for a little pub type place. Margaritas, martinis, and adult milkshakes! I stuck with margaritas as I loved them. And the final bonus was the 10% discount with my independent Birmingham card! At first we felt a little odd as it was so quiet (it was a Tuesday night after all), but people soon started to come in. Staff were very friendly and attentive, I ordered the chicken which came in a creamy mushroom sauce with mash and veg and my other half ordered the steak and chips, both were visually impressive and tasted amazing! We tried a bit of each other's meals and I think the chicken swung it slightly although the steak was cooked to perfection. Initially my boyfriend thought he didn't have enought chips but then struggled to finish them so I think the portions were spot on. We had a lovely bottle of sauvignon blanc which was fresh, fruity and light. For dessert we made short work of white blondie and the suprisingly delicious chocolate and beetroot brownie - yum! Having last visited the Victorian Restaurant many years ago for a works Christmas lunch, I thought it was about time to give it another go. A lunch date with Simone R. (on a very rainy Friday) provided the perfect opportunity to grab a bite to eat and see if my initial judgements of this venue were correct. We met up at about 1pm, which is the prime lunch period in the City Centre. I was pleased to note that it wasn't too busy (it's a fairly large place) and me and Simone bagged a table upstairs (by the balcony) quickly and started to have a look at the menu. The prices here are very reasonable. We both ended up opting for a steak baguette (served with crisps and salad) which was about £5 for a generous serving. We paired this up a couple of coffee's and the final bill (for both of us) came to around £12. The steak was freshly cooked to order and seemed of a fair quality. The baguette was warm and the sides of salad and crisps weren't huge - but were perfectly portioned to go with the sandwich. The coffee was a little sub par, but this was mainly due to the fact that they used UHT (rather than fresh) milk. I actually have no problem with UHT at home (at a push), it just has no place in a cafe/coffee shop/restaurant. Saying that, this place has a "greasy spoon" charm and cheekily seems to get away with it and still manage a decent 3* rating. The service was friendly and the staff were welcoming from the get go. It's all table service and we found that we got served fairly swiftly and didn't wait too long for our food to arrive. The interior is terribly twee with pictures of Queen Victoria on the wall and collectable plates everywhere, but it's a novel experience. If you're looking for a very reasonable sit down meal experience for a lunch or an early dinner, you can't go far wrong with a visit to the Victorian Restaurant.

Although there are several options on the menu, at affordable prices, such as a glass of house wine for only £1.90, or a 3 course meal at £12.99 with a drink, the food isn't up to much of a scratch. Old type of seating with dirty table cloths on the table, when I said something about my tea being very cold, the waiter just snapped and said order another one! This way they'll drive everyone away. (ha, they do offer a 'tasty combo' takeaway option which includes a sandwich, crisps and a drink at £3.30). They need to improve on the service, and just think about how they treat customers. Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend this one, and certainly don't take your mother there!

The reviews are generally pretty decent, although a little mixed, so it looked a good should. Inside the décor is really relaxed with lots of shabby chic and exposed wood, pleasant and with plenty of space to sit. Its apparently part of a chain of lounges situated throughout the country, but I cant say I have ever come across one. Each lounge has a different name (i.e. Ocho, Trago, Verdo) so perhaps its that it isn't immediately obvious (or im not very observant). The food menu is extensive. This often worries me, because getting such a wide range of food spot on is always going to be pretty difficult, and in this case it proved to be an issue. The burger was served on a stale bun and was generally uninspiring and the Chicken and Avocado panini was served with an avocado sauce rather than fresh. The chicken was also reminiscent or packaged stuff from the supermarket. The portions were a little stingy too. So the food wasn't great, but with the general vibe of the place, the service and the comprehensive drinks menu, this place is a pretty good catch all type of bar/cafe. I wouldn't advise travelling to go here, but I don't think there's anywhere local doing anything similar at the moment.
