It's very obvious that this section did not take any direction from a Native person, or do any research into considerations to be taken. How about mention of community efforts to reconstruct the Kalapuya dictionary? How about teaching about the agriculture they did here before colonization? How about teaching about Lane County's roles in the atrocities of residential schools? How about not putting the ONLY photos and mention of native people up in a corner you can't even access? How about showing examples of traditional dances done by Kalapuya and neighboring tribes? So f*ckin, daft, y'all. Do better. I understand that its a small museum, but you could at LEAST make the stairs available to view what you do have, even though its almost comical how obvious it is that these did not want their picture taken, or didn't know, like the blind woman standing outside her house- probably not knowing who tf was there or why. The Race for Change exhibit is phenomenal and takes up a very decent amount of space, that was awesome. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of one is because of the effort put into the Race for Change exhibit, and the fiery and undeniable acknowledgments of KKK presence here in Eugene- which NEEDS to be taught about if our community wants to be a safe space.

Currently there is a hippie movement exhibit that is very well done but I believe it takes away from other important historical events. The pioneer section of the museum is definitely my favorite part. They have a number of horse-drawn wagons from various time periods. If you're in the area and want to know a little about Lane County stop by, or if you live here and don't know enough come check it out. Also it would definitely be a good place to take kids to teach them local history.

When you ascend to the attic, you'll find an impressive replica of the house, and also a nice collection of war memorabilia (Swords, flags, photos, medical instruments, etc.). We very much enjoyed learning more about the history of Eugene; the docents were both friendly and knowledgeable. The furnishings and architecture are from a different time and the tour was informative.

The docent was a very kind and friendly lady who knew the most about Aida but knew something about all of them. I appreciate her honesty when we asked a wished didn't know she would tell us she was not sure but would offer a maybe because... or probably because.... She pointed out what pieces of furniture were original to the home and explained how the rest were donated. So much history! She said the last lady who owned the home was raised in the Campbell House Inn which is actually where we stayed! I didn't take a bunch of photos as I was enjoying the moment and listening to the docent tell us the history of the home. Also many other people have posted great photos here already so no point in being redundant. The docent said it is decorated for Christmas during the holidays and recommended to visit it if I'm the area during that time. The theme was weddings do when we visited as the docent explained that someone had donated a tremendous amount of wedding gowns to the museum.

Not much to see in this Museum…read more I really appreciate that there is an organization devoted to preserving Springfield's beginnings, though. Unfortunately, I can't help but compare this museum to Brownsville, (population under 2,000) and wonder why there's so little to tell in Springfield (population over 60,000). The building is great, I must say, (but has no handicapped access) and the floor space is limited, so maybe that's one reason. There were random cases here and there with objects in them, a dressmakers dummy with a Victorian style dress, a few household items and a temporary exhibit with nice quilts displayed here and there. Upstairs there is a ridiculous Simpsons display area. I'm glad Matt Groening finally admitted that this is the Springfield he was thinking of when he created the television show, but find the fiberglass display quite garish and un-historical. I just didn't get any hint of why Springfield is here, other than the photo showing the location of the spring (The spring that gave the name to Springfield) is (under an apartment building on B street). I was thinking about the wood industries here, Dorris Ranch, the large population of Latinos, the proximity to Eugene and how the people there refer to Springfield down their noses ("Springtucky") and what has been done to create an identity that speaks directly to the actual current population besides one photo of a local native tribe? What about the ferry that used to link Springfield with Eugene? I realize the whole "Simpsons" connection is to draw in visitors, and I suppose this has been successful to some degree, but I did find this pretty empty of local history. This makes me sad, as the volunteers who run the place are well-meaning and nice.

I thought I'd have to spend 10-15 minutes going through the whole place looking for it but there it was on the coat rack, placed there by a staffer who came across it.

New works are top notch Japanese & Korean collections are small but stellar Contemporary & modern North American artists very broad and high quality choices. The arrival of 45,000 visitors has created huge lakes of vehicles in private fields and overwhelmed our local cell tower for our population of 5,000. Signal can be quite sketchy at times. Some travelers have been spotted in the local hardware store looking for bug spray. Some shopkeepers are leaving the shelves of deodorant, soap and mouthwash unlocked in hopes of petty theft. The early morning hours brought us a traffic jam on Hwy 126. Traffic was stalled from the gates of the fair all the way to Fern Ridge Reservoir. Even THIS exceptional reporter had to lay on the horn to prevent someone trying to pass me on the sidewalk in the only intersection in town. The lights became meaningless as vehicles were stopped in the middle of the intersection during light changes. Suttle Rd traffic has slowed significantly but is still manageable. New to the 'Fair Outside the Fair' this year are 25mph radar speed signs hanging over the standard 45mph placards on both Suttle and Territorial. This makes for a nice diversion and a good opportunity to calibrate your speedometer at 55mph, one can't be too sure.. On the lighter side.... This afternoon gave us a highly decorated madman with water pistols jumping out in the road and squirting cars, let's just hope it was water and that he can dodge in case a local shoots back. On Eastbound 126 there was a 3 wheel scooter speeding down the bicycle lane. Lucky for them there was one of Veneta's finest on that side of the road only too happy to celebrate this event with flashy lights! The intersection at Suttle and Territorial is once again turning into a game of Vehicle Mosh Pit as you see many sticker laden vehicles that are obviously low on blinker fluid. There are stadiums... and then there are places that feel like they've been stitched into the soul…read moreof a sport. Hayward Field is the latter. I've always had a soft spot for this place. Maybe it's the ghosts of greatness knowing that Steve Prefontaine once tore across this very track with that fearless, front-running style. Maybe it's my love for everything University of Oregon the culture, the pride, the legacy. Or maybe it's just the way this place sits in Eugene like it belongs there, like it's earned its keep. But this visit hit different. We'd been out the night before one of those reckless, laugh-too-hard, probably-made-a-few-bad-decisions kind of nights. I woke up feeling like absolute trash. The kind of morning where your body is negotiating terms just to sit upright. But instead of folding, I dragged myself out to Hayward Field. And I ran. Not pretty. Not fast. Just honest. A few laps turned into more. Sweat started pouring, lungs opened up, and somewhere between the pain and the rhythm, something shifted. It was like the bad decisions from the night before were getting wrung out of me, step by step. A full-on purge. I'll be real there was a moment I thought I might throw up right there on sacred ground. But then the endorphins hit. And just like that I was back. Energy. Clarity. Fire. I went from wanting to crawl back into bed to feeling like I could take on the whole day. "Let's go fly," I said. "Let's go do something." That's what this place does it resets you. It brought me back to the last time I was here for the Eugene Marathon. That race... man. Grinding up hills, coasting through valleys, pushing through every doubt you've got and then finally coming back into Hayward Field. You hear your name, see your time, get that medal placed around your neck... it's more than a finish line. It's a moment you carry with you. This place is known as TrackTown, USA for a reason. It's hosted Olympic Trials, world-class competitions, and some of the best athletes to ever lace up a pair of running shoes. But beyond all the accolades, records, and history... it's personal. Because yeah I love the wild nights, the stories, the chaos. But places like this remind you of something just as important: take care of yourself. Move your body. Earn your breath. Even if you made a few bad calls the night before. So if you're in Eugene don't just drive by. Walk it. Run it. Feel it. You might show up feeling broken... and leave feeling like the king of the world.
