The pub was packed, and there was a party of 4 waiting to be seated. The wait was 20 minutes, but were willing to wait as we could get drinks quickly. Also, a full pub is a good sign to me that the place is good, so i figured it'd be worth the wait. And I was right. Our table ordered the following: 2 chicken caesar salads & 2 steak sandwiches. Chicken Caesar Salad: Crisp romaine lettuce, salty crispy bacon pieces and very moist chicken breast. The dressing was lightly drizzled on (which I had asked for on the side which they forgot about), but it was ok as they didn't drown the salad. I took a few bites of the steak sandwich: "Medium" = "medium well" in US standards. At least that's how this steak was prepared. But the meat was tender and flavorful, so it was still good. Came with some salted sauteed mushrooms and onions on top of the steak, sandwiched between 2 pieces of focaccia bread. Also came with a side salad and fries/"chips." The prices were fair, but the service was slow. Almost painfully slow. It was crazy to me that it took over 30 minutes for the table that was seated just before us, to receive chips and eggs, and the soup of the day. I figure the soup has been prepared before hand, and it only takes 2 minutes to fry an egg... why would it take SOO long to get those out? I understand the kitchen was probably going at full steam, but it seems that they could be more efficiently run. I was starving by the time I received my salad, and the place was 1/2 empty by the time we finished eating. This was fine as i'm on vacation right now, but geeze lowise, i'd like to get my food a little quicker... especially when it's easy food to prepare. But, I do appreciate that it wasn't bland but instead tasted very fresh, and the service was friendly. There was a lot of Seabiscuit paraphernalia which was pretty interesting to look at.

The displays are filled up regually and there is a lot of choice. The staff are friendly and willing to offer help on choosing wine and seem to be knowledgeable. The parade of shops can get busy but there is alot of parking.

A wander down Winchester High Street brings you across 4 chocolate shops in quick succession Montezumas is a chain, which started in Brighton but now has a presence across the south of England. The Winchester shop is quaint but but it does have a nice selection of confectionery on display. I especially appreciated their single estate range though I didn't find anything to match Hotel Chocolat's Madagascan bar with its fruity tones My girlfriend and I walked out with some truffles for a dinner party, which went down very well. I especially like the geranium and orange truffles

But the fact that a baby stroller has taken up half the floor space is not the store owner's fault - it's that of selt-entitled parental who think their sprogs are important deities (another issue there), but I do mention this as a warning that the floor space is rather small. I picked up some boxes of Christmas Truffles for my husband's family members and they have gone down a treat. Only funny side for me, being from North America, is that when I mention that one of my favourite chocolate shops is called Montezuma my friends back home just howl in laughter over the name .. as a popular saying in N.America for have traveller's "runs" is "Montezuma's Revenge" .. so as a foreigner I do get a bit of a giggle.

With no car, I've never been able to get to the original Riverford Field Kitchen so it was wonderful to get the chance to sample their delicious, seasonal menu. It was sort of like being at someone's wedding - minus the boring speeches - with around 80 people sitting at communal tables around the yurt - which thankfully, on a rather chilly, rainy evening, had a nice warm heater in the middle. Baskets of bread and very fresh crudites were brought to the tables for starters, with plates of hummus and beetroot dips - really fresh and delicious. The meat eaters had lamb with white beans for a main - I passed on the rather unexciting veggie alternative , as the side vegetables looked really brilliant - I had some wonderful sauteed greens with wet garlic, roasted carrot and beetroot and some asparagus and broad bean salad, although there wasn't much left after the rest of the people on the table had helped themselves. There was also new potatoes with mint and butter, which I didn't get round to. Then for dessert - trestle tables displaying a huge blueberry pavlova, lemon tart, strawberry rhubarb crumble and some fantastically squdgy chocolate brownies. As our table was the last to be served, I had a bit of dessert anxiety worrying that the brownies might run out - but a quick word with one of the waiters, and our table got to go up before the end of the queue - and the brownie was as good as it looked. There were a few spoonfuls of crumble left for seconds - so I got to taste some of that too - and even though I normally hate rhubarb, it was lovely. I had some very good decaff coffee to finish - and the bill came to a very reasonable £27 each. I really hope they come back next year!
