this is a long overdue review for my favorite indian restaurant in the city (and possibly my favorite restaurant of all). i eat here almost every week, but keep forgetting to leave a rating. time to fix that :) bombay to burgh is an amazing restaurant. it's always delicious, with food that tastes fresh and perfectly balanced. as a fan of indian food, i love how the menu isn't stuck on the classic dishes that you find in every indian restaurant in the US. sure, you'll find butter chicken, tikka masala, palak paneer, naan, and biryani, and they are all very delicious! but there are also dishes like bagara eggplants (described by the menu as "spice stuffed baby eggplants in a roasted peanut, sesame, poppy seeds and coriander gravy, finished with tamarind and coconut") and chicken xacuti (described as "a classic, aromatic chicken curry from the coastal region of Goa, India, known for its complex blend of freshly roasted spices, toasted coconut, and tamarind for a tangy balance"). i ordered both of these tonight and can vouch that they are extremely tasty and worthy of your attention. personally, my only struggle here is that literally every item on the menu looks delicious, and i hate having to choose! which brings me to my favorite part of this restaurant: sunday buffet. now, the food is wonderful every day of the week. i just ordered some tonight myself, so i definitely recommend it. that said, my absolute favorite time to come is for the buffet on sunday. i think buffets get a bad reputation for being all about quantity over quality and for having an unpleasant atmosphere (the passive aggressive "don't waste food" signs that most have don't help, either). sadly, these complaints are true of most buffets. bombay to burgh is a wonderful contrast and, in my opinion, does buffets the way they ought to be. the atmosphere is pleasant (no signs!) and you're likely to see many regular customers. there's a good chance you'll even be greeted by the very owner, G, and get to speak with him a bit! the staff is all very friendly and helpful, always doing their best to make sure you enjoy your visit. they are always happy to help if food needs to be refilled at the buffet or if you want to order anything. finally, and most importantly of all, the food is amazing! unlike most buffets, bombay to burgh only puts out a limited number of offerings: 2 appetizers, 2 meat entrees, 2 vegetarian entrees, 1 bread, 1 rice, 1 dessert, and 1 beverage. i think this is the perfect number to ensure there's both variety and quality. plus, you can actually try a little bit of everything, which usually isn't possible at giant buffets. my favorite part is that every week brings new food, which is now usually themed around a certain region of india. you know they'll always have reliable butter chicken and garlic naan to make you happy, but the rest of the buffet might be dishes you've never eaten before. it's a perfect way to explore different flavors and new food, without worrying you'll waste your money. eating out is a bit pricey anywhere these days, but i personally think that the buffet is still very affordable. have you seen the price of appetizers recently? just the fact that you can choose from two of those with your meal makes it a good deal to me! i feel very fortunate that i get the chance to eat here regularly. while i've loved indian food for over 20 years at this point, bombay to burgh has taken my appreciation to a whole new level and has me researching more food to cook myself. it's a wonderful place to eat! read more

Bombay to Burgh is an Indian restaurant nestled away on the outskirts of Pittsburgh in the Swissvale neighborhood. I have no basis on comparison with other Pittsburgh area Indian restaurants, but this seemed to be the one with the best reviews, so we chose this spot for dinner. There is very limited street parking out front, so you may have to circle around the block to find a free spot. There's ample seating for dining in, with tasteful decor throughout the restaurant. We started off with a mango lassi (4.5/5) which was delightfully refreshing with the proper hints of mango without being too sweet. For the appetizer, we ordered the B2B Chicken (3.5/5), which seemed almost like a very mildly spiced chicken pakora. The chicken was tender, but there wasn't much flavor in the batter it was fried in. For meals we went with the chicken tikka masala and butter chicken (both 4.25/5). Both had delicious gravies without being overly heavy with cream, with the chicken tikka masala being a tad bit spicier and more robust due to the onions & bell pepper content. We wound up going with garlic naan (4/5) and malabar laccha paratha (4.5/5) for bread since they didn't offer a plain or butter naan as an option...both were tasty, and the paratha was a great alternative to the more traditional plain naan. For dessert, we went with the nizami phirni (3/5), which was described as a "slow-cooked pudding with broken rice, milk, nuts, saffron, coconut, and cardamom" on the menu. The flavors were very muted, as we were expecting a more traditional kheer, which generally has a stronger flavor of saffron and cardamom. Service (3.5/5) wasn't the best, with 2 people waiting on us at random times, but was otherwise friendly. While we found the dessert a bit disappointing, the rest of the meal was pretty fresh and flavorful, so are glad we got to try to try Bombay to Burgh (overall 4/5), and would recommend them to others looking for decent Indian cuisine in Pittsburgh. read more

Thandai is a wonderful drink and they prepare it expertly, served in a wood cup. So good! We enjoyed the Gorbura chicken (though it was a bit salty) and the aloo palak chana. I had really hoped to see methi matar malai on the menu, but they didn't have it. What they did prepare for us was excellent. The naan was especially good. While not as large as other restaurants naan, it had a great puffy texture and a lovely flavor. Biryani looked good on its transit to a nearby table. Next time we're back we'll definitely order it. Sundays are a good day to visit, as they serve it buffet-style. read more

We cook Indian at home a lot, so when we go out to Indian, I want it to be really good and, ideally, things I don't make at home. Bombay to Burgh met this expectation. It's an unassuming building with sparse decorations, but they make up for the decor with fabulous dishes. We got tandoori chicken, a lamb curry, a veggie curry and a Dahl, with bread and rice. Fresh, flavorful dishes with really kind service! We started with an order of the tawa idli ($8.95) which is starting to become one of my go-to dishes. The fluffy, steamed lentil cake is perfect for soaking up the savory, fresh, and tangy chutney flavors. I'm ashamed to say that it has been a while since my visit and I don't remember exactly what we ordered as entrees. What I do remember is that everything tasted very good and we chose a selection where each dish would bring its own unique flavor profile. For just 3 of us, the tawa idli, 2 meat entrees, 1 veggie entree, garlic naan and rice was quite a bit of food that left us stuffed and with leftovers. The restaurant wasn't too crowded on a weekday evening. The only other table of customers had already finished eating when we arrived, but they stayed chatting with each other even after we left. I liked the laid-back vibe and the employees were also very friendly. At the end, the bill came with a small bag of mukhwas for each person. I finally had an occasion to eat at the restaurant rather than get takeout. The food was amazing, as always. The service was fine --the servers were friendly and checked in on us at a good cadence. There was a lot of takeout traffic, which took away from the dine-in experience because we were seated in the main room with views of the kitchen door, checkout counter, front door, and waiting area. I brought a bottle of wine since they are BYOB. I wasn't expecting the server to offer us $5 branded wine glasses. I declined, and instead was offered the metal water glasses for the wine (it was fine; the wine was not expensive). I think next time I will get takeout. read more

I was charging my car and needed a spot to eat. I grew up in this area but have been away for 5 years. This was surprising discovery in an area that doesn't have much in the way of food choices. I stuck with what I'm familiar with...Chicken Tikka Marsala, rice and garlic naan. Diet Coke to wash it all down. Rarely do I eat at an Indian spot that's not a buffet. I like variety and volume lol. There portions were generous. The chicken super tender and cooked perfectly. The sauce was amazing, especially with the garlic naan to soak it up with. And I know Diet Coke goes well with Chinese food, but better with Tikka Marsala! No room for dessert but comfortably full. I enjoyed every bite! read more

We got takeout from B2B fairly regularly in 2024 and still appreciate having them in Swissvale. Their online ordering is easy and pickup is usually smooth. I like that they package the food in a large paper bag instead of plastic (although wrapping each individual container in plastic wrap is probably a bit of overkill). The last time we got palak paneer (delicious spices and soft paneer chunks) and butter chicken (sauce was a bit too sweet but very tender meat). We'll be back again in 2025. read more

This place continues to get better every time we check it out. They seem to have updated their menu to offer more options that are explicitly vegetarian as opposed to having paneer as a protein option. That was really helpful in both simplifying the menu and opening up more plant-based options. Very much appreciated. In terms of the actual food, the quality is still fantastic. Everything we ordered was nicely seasoned with a wide range of flavor profiles, and every dish was hearty without being overly heavy. The aloo gobhi matar (potato, cauliflower, and peas) was a great blend of textures. The aloo palak chana (potato, spinach, and chickpeas) was extremely flavorful. The samosa chaat was a fantastic blend of bright and crunchy freshness merged with a samosa covered in flavorful sauce and chickpeas. Everything was great. We ordered takeout, and they seem to have updated their online ordering experience. Placing an order was easy, and everything was ready within a few minutes of when it was expected to be. We've ordered takeout from Bombay To Burgh quite a few times, but this was my first time dining in. Our waitress was so great at handling such a large party. All eight of us received our apps, drinks, and entrées quickly, and everything was accurate. The space is very small (maybe ten tables total), so we were the largest party there by far. The food did not disappoint. We ordered samosas and paneer kurkure for the table to start. The sweet chili sauce with the kurkure was delightful and not overly spicy, and the samosas were warm and full of savory goodness. The most popular dish ordered by our group was the chicken tikka masala in varying levels of spice. Every piece of chicken was tender, and the spice blend of the sauce was perfect. BTB is very good at respecting your desired level of spice, so picky eaters fear not. The mango lassi was so good that I had two before dinner was even finished. Just went again for the first time in a while - it is about $17-20 for a dish, and $4 for garlic naan, and comes with lots of perfectly cooked basmati rice. The ambiance is quiet and lovely - beautiful blue walls and I love their serving dishes and utensils. I got the maatar paneer and my partner got the lamb vindaloo - both perfectly spiced with whole spices and so rich. We always have left overs. Love this place! read more

We were not sure what to expect from the restaurant exterior, but this is such a find! The restaurant interior is kind of basic, but the food is where the magic happens. We enjoyed every (spicy) bite and I had the most delicious drink called an almond milk thandai. It was cold, creamy, nutty and had just a hint of sweetness. Cute, small setting with very pleasant staff. Eager to answer questions and describe various dishes. We had never been here before, so I wanted to try something very new. I am usually a lamb fan, but decided to go vegetarian. I had a wonderful surprise. My Malai Kofta, vegetable dumplings in a poppy seed, cashew, tomato and onion gravy creamy sauce was excellent with a hint of spice, just as I had asked for. Spooned over basmati rice, perfect combination with garlic nann. Delicious mixture of flavors. My husband enjoyed the Coconut Curried Chicken,mustard seeds, coconut, curry leaves, tomato, ginger, onion, spices. Also very tasty with very tender chicken. I loved my mango lassi times two. Very cute restaurant. Everything we ordered was good and spicy so make sure to order mild if you can't handle spice because even they're mild was a little spicy. The chef came out and made his rounds we ordered and the appetizers came out fairly quick then right after our entrées came out fairly quick, which was great. I got the coconut curry, chicken mild, and it was wonderful. There was probably three big pieces of chicken breast in it we ordered a total of four entrées and there was probably about four pieces of chicken or lamb in each dish. I do like the dishes it was served in. It's also family style. Their non-bread was OK but they had this other type of crispy bread which reminded me of a scallion pancake without the scallions and that was delicious. read more

This was my first time at Bombay to Burgh and honestly it was great! The owner is one of the kindest humans I've met - you can tell the love and care he has for the food he puts out. The chef was so sweet and I'm thankful I got to meet her as well as thank her for the beautiful spread. It's a great little spot for extremely authentic Indian food and I would highly recommend to anyone who's looking for something out of the norm. I wanted a samosa yesterday but I didn't want to go far and I wasn't paying a ten dollar fee from Ubereats or Postmates (which is owned by the same company), so I ordered samosa chaat from Bombay to Burgh in Swissvale. Parking is a little tricky as it's pretty small but the food is super delish. We came here on the recommendation of others. It was a Thursday night and we found a parking spot out front. Upon entering the main dining room had several parties and we were seated at the remaining two seater. The menu features paneer, chicken, and lamb. We ordered B2B house special and makhani (both chicken) and a side of garlic naan. The food came out within a reasonable amount of time in spite of several larger parties. I definitely appreciated that. Both dishes were mild in terms of spice level. The makhani was creamy and pleasant. The B2B has bell peppers and a slight hint of garlic. Great food! We got takeout and ordered the chicken biriyani, chicken tikka masala, and lamb vindaloo. The biriyani very flavorful and had a good amount of meat (could have maybe had a little more). The raita we were served with it was a very small and a little watery for my taste--would have preferred a bigger size/less watery. The chicken tikka masala was also good. The lamb vindaloo was our favorite and had a good amount of lamb that was not fatty. It had a really nice spice level. We also got mango lassi and my only complaint is the cups/portions were a lot smaller than most Indian restaurants I've been to. Would definitely come back! Wow - if I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would. The best south Asian/Indian food I've had in Pittsburgh. Love that the menu is small, as it's clear they're perfecting these dishes because of it. We had the coconut shrimp, paneer kurkure, mushroom garlic masala, and biryani. Of course we also ordered garlic naan. The Paneer Kurkure stole the show! Delicious crunchy breading and amazing dipping sauce. Everything was seasoned amazingly, no skimping on chicken and proteins. The biryani was amazing - a HUGE portion. One of the best biryanis I've ever eaten. The service was friendly and quick. Their restaurant is very clean and bright! Great place for date night or out with friends. They offer Saturday and Sunday brunch and we're excited to go back and try. I honestly don't know where to start. I went to Bombay to Burgh with high hopes, but walked out feeling cheated, disappointed, and honestly a little sad. For a $17+tax buffet, you would at least expect a decent variety, but all they offered was chholey and aaloo matar sabji, both poorly made and watery, with zero flavor or care. That's not a buffet, that's just two sad trays of food. And dessert? If you can call it that. The only option was a bowl of vermicelli kheer that looked unappetizing and tasted even worse. Not a single fresh or appealing item to make up for the lackluster meal. I felt completely ripped off, paying full price for what felt like a bare-bones afterthought. If this is what they call a buffet, it's misleading and unfair. I will never go back, and I genuinely hope they take this feedback seriously, because customers deserve far better. read more

I returned for my 2nd visit and ordered 3 new items: Mango Lassi, Nizami Phirni, and the Lamb Biryani. Every item was a hit. The mango lassi was perfectly sweet and creamy, the lamb biryani was aromatic and flavorful, and the nizami phirni was absolutely incredible with the dried rose petals on top. A unique Indian restaurant with a great menu and a decent location. I saw all the amazing reviews and was very interested in trying the food out. I ordered the dahi Kabab, samosa chaat, and garlic naan. All the food was quite good. The dahi Kabab was one of the most unique items on the menu, and something I don't typically see in Indian restaurants. It is a yogurt patty that is pan fried. The texture on the inside is in between cottage cheese and greek yogurt. Very nicely pan fried for crispness. However, I personally wasn't that big of a fan because it included a ton of onions. Onion wasn't listed as an ingredient on the site, so I would have not ordered if I had known it contained so many onions. It was also my first time trying samosa chaat, although I am a big fan of samosas and chickpeas. It was really good! The portion was great for the price. Chaat had a nice balance of sweetness (some from the sauce and pomegranate) and savoriness. Lots of chickpeas and very well made samosas. Yogurt wasn't my favorite addition but not bad. Not too spicy at all. Very high quality and would definitely recommend. The garlic naan was also pretty good. It was relatively standard, nothing too out of the ordinary, but good. They use a fair amount of chopped garlic. Not too buttery. Fair portion as well. I used it to soak up some of the delicious chickpeas from the samosa chaat. All in all, I can definitely see why this place gets high reviews. The food is made in house (even the breads), the menu is great, and the food is high quality. Give it a try! read more

I recently moved to Pittsburgh and have been searching for an Indian restaurant that is authentic, local, and of course has great food. This place doesn't have great food... it has amazing food! This will be my go-to spot. I had the vizag kobbari kura with paneer and my mom had the mushroom garlic masala with shrimp. We shared samosas and garlic naan- all so flavorful.
