A year ago, a family member of mine brought me to Bonchon and introduced me to Korean fried chicken. This has been my favorite Korean fried chicken place ever since. For a whole year I've been revisiting this place multiple times - eating in and taking out. I usually order half soy garlic-half spicy and the texture and taste of the wings are always as promising as they appear on the pictures. They also provide free refills on the pickled radishes - which I cannot get enough of. I like the idea of pickled radishes. It goes well with the chicken and it cleanses your palate. What's great about Bonchon is that they also offer a variety of alcohol and quite frankly, beer and Korean fried chicken just complement each other. On another occasion, I went with a Korean friend and I was told that the restaurant layout plus the Kpop music they played also resembled the Korean fried chicken places one would find in Seoul, which made my experience even more enjoyable. The only aspect I didn't like was whenever I would order chicken for take-out, it would take a while. Place is kind of divey compared to other bonchon locations but the menu is pretty standard. We ordered a large combo to split, the chicken was on point. It was cooked perfectly although I would have preferred a little more of the soy garlic sauce (can't get enough!). We also got their seasoned fries which I wasn't really a fan of. It was supposed to be seasoned with Parmesan but it had an odd sweet flavor to it. We also ordered the bulgogi tacos which I was kind of disappointed with. We came to this location because we live in Queens because it's MUCH closer than Koreana Restaurant in Hicksville where we usually go and where they also serve BonChon chicken. If you have never had Korean fried chicken before then you are in for an amazing taste sensation!! We had a large order of Soy Garlic Wings. The wings are amazingly light, crunchy, sweet, tasty and meaty all at the same time, and not extremely greasy at all. We also shared a large order of fries that were still crunchy and crispy even after they had cooled off, and we also shared an order of takoyaki...one of my FAVORITE Japanese comfort foods. The complimentary Asian cole slaw with ginger sauce was also a delicious, tasty treat. I also have to check out the Okonomiyaki (another favorite Japanese food of mine that is a mix between a pizza and a pancake) on my next visit. As this location is situated in a Korean area of Queens, there are also several Korean entrées on the menu as well as an assortment of beers and Soju, an alcoholic Korean beverage that I'll have to try on my next visit. We both liked the vibe of the eatery with it's subdued lighting and large screen TVs that showed a mix of K-Pop, R&B and pop videos. When I arrived home the food had cooled down significantly. I wasn't blown away by the chicken. It was flavorful but overcooked and dry. The shumai was OK. The fries were funky in a good way. Kind of what I would call Umami Fries. It tasted like the fries were seasoned with fish sauce, Parmesan cheese and sugar. We meant to order at the Bonchon in Northern Blvd and didn't realize that we got the wrong location until we arrived at the parking lot. Major mistake. Not all Bonchons are the same. This one was a total disappointment. We got the Family Meal but this one gives you popcorn shrimp instead of fried rice. We got all spicy but it wasn't really spicy and the wings taste old and dry like it's been sitting there for days to be eaten. The drumstick was pink inside and kind of raw. Forget about the taste, we don't want to get food poisoning. The chicken pieces were small and just didn't taste good. It was missing the freshness, savory and crunchy factor which is a prerequisite for Korean Fried Chicken. The fries were soggy and the portion was very little, only meant for 1 serving. Never going back to this location. The staff are not friendly when we went to pick up. They see you come in the door but don't acknowledge you and pretend to be busy instead of helping you. Boohoo. After assessing the menu and remembering that I needed my money for an upcoming trip I settled for the chicken strips with soy garlic and a caesar salad. Within 10 minutes I received my food and decided to eat it there; which seem to surprise the girls at the counter. The chicken had a nice crisp to it and tasted like it had been freshly fried. Unfortunately the soy garlic sauce on the chicken was just mehhh. The sauce was definitely missing something. The caesar salad was average.. definitely not worth $8.85. I should have gotten fries but I was trying to be somewhat healthy. Overall there was nothing memorable about this meal. I love Korean fried chicken and having tried a few Bonchons in Manhattan, I actually had low expectations for the one in Bayside. Bonchon is conveniently located a short walk from the LIRR Bayside station on Bell Boulevard. It's located on a block with a set of varied storefronts and restaurants. When you walk in, you'll notice that it's quite dark inside and the dining room is a bit long and narrow. The well-worn booths are set up in one long row and are separated by high partitions. You won't get to see your neighbors and you'll get plenty of privacy. There's even a button on the table that you use to call the waiter. All the while, you can enjoy k-pop videos on a small tv mounted right above the entrance. What I can tell from this location is that they do a lot of takeout and they have people trickling in throughout the day. We arrived at 1 pm on a Sunday and there was a steady stream of people coming in. As for the food, we came here for the fried chicken. Someone in our party wanted to order a salad, but the waitress said it wasn't available, which is surprising. We went ahead and ordered a half and half combo of soy garlic and spicy wings and drums. In my opinion, this Bonchon is totally better that the ones in Manhattan. For some reason, the ones in Manhattan tend to have a hard crust for the outer layer, whereas here in Bayside, the skin is as it should be, light and crispy with a light sauce glaze. We really enjoyed the texture and the flavor. The spicy chicken was our favorite as it delivered some heat. As for free sides, we were given some savory corn and some radish. We also ordered some plain French fries to go with our meal. Surprisingly, the salt they used tasted as if it was seasoned. It was a delicious surprise and we went through the large basket in a hurry. Finally, we also ordered takoyaki as an appetizer. It came out fully cooked, not gooey with a decent amount of octopus. I can drive right there and there is usually parking. Pickup food and go. The food is cooked to order, so it takes awhile, but that's a good thing. I've eaten Korean chicken i Korea for over for 7 years so maybe my opinion may have some clout. There were many things that were off about the flavor and texture of both kinds of chicken. Immediately I noticed that the chicken had way too much oil coating the skin which makes me think that it had been either not fried fresh and re-fried or fried frozen. Moreover, the chicken itself was overcooked and a bit dry under the crust. The sauces themselves didn't taste too bad but was definitely a bit too salty. However, the batches I got had too much coating on it which took away from the chicken flavor. Eating at the location is a bit unbearable because of overwhelming smell of oil.
