Glenview location is right next to several other Korean restaurants. Bonchon was the only one that was empty and my wife mentioned it to me as we walked in. The other places were packed. However, I heard good things about the chicken. They were not wrong, the chicken is great! Unfortunately I couldn't eat any of my entre because I pulled out a long thin hair from the first fork full of food. Literally tossed the entire container of food. I'm hungry and disappointed. What am I supposed to do? Let them buy me another meal full of hair? I just wanted some quick dinner. Grrr. read more

I typically love bonchon chicken! However, this location is lacking in flavor. Usually, a hit or miss for me. They usually don't sauce their chicken wings well so you don't get much saucy-ness. When I was in Korea teaching English, one of the best things was ordering Kyochon's soy fried chicken, aka a food that will imprison you with one bite. Finally, Chicago gets Bonchon, which is similar to Kyochon. We ordered the medium combo ($23.95) of half spicy & half soy garlic. Love at first bite! The enduring crisp & finger-licking flavor holds up against more established Korean fried chicken joints. Definitely one of our favorite KFCs. Hard to pick which flavor we liked more, so we usually just get both flavors. Also ordered the cheese tteokbokki, nice spice levels, though not repeatworthy. At the Chinatown location, we've tried their salmon avocado ball and chicken buldak, both enjoyable. But the fried chicken is what haunts our days haha. Not a big fan of the close-together tables that would slide every time a server bumped it, which was so often that no one apologized. The service from our waiter, while friendly, was excruciatingly slow that night. Our food came out way later than other tables who were seated after us. Fries never arrived and coke arrived towards the end of our meal. Our waiter apologized and comped us at the end without us asking. If it wasn't for our waiter smoothing things over, we would've had a worse image of Bonchon, but I'm glad that the suburbs has a Bonchon now. read more

I went to Bonchon for a weekday lunch with my coworkers. We were the first customers of the day and had our choice of seating. Our server was helpful and attentive, explaining the options and offering us complimentary hot green tea while we waiting for our meals. The lunch special menu features different entrees with fried chicken (and in some cases, pork). I chose the spicy chicken tacos, which include Korean fried chicken, lettuce, coleslaw, red onions, spicy mayo and ranch in soft flour shells. They come three to an order for $8.95. They were perfectly spicy, and it was the perfect amount of food. I also added a side of steamed rice for $1 to help absorb some of the heat, and was glad I did. (I poured a little of the taco sauce that had dripped out into the rice to give it a little flavor and moisture.) My friends stuck with the traditional Korean fried chicken, which is offered in wings, drumsticks and strips, and everyone enjoyed them. One person added a side of seasoned fries, and the basket was large - more than you might expect for a side, yet enough food to justify the $4.95 cost. As we ate, Korean music videos played on large TV screens near the entrance, adding to the cultural experience. I will definitely return to Bonchon, and will probably order the spicy tacos again, because they were so good - although some of the other items look tempting, too. Only came here because another place we go to was unexpectedly closed. Chicken is not as good as it used to be and not as tasty or as crispy. We got rice cakes which was super spicy and we barely ate it and asked if we could get something. They gave us a sad bao bun with a skinny malnourished pork sliver. Was horrible. Small portions even with the radish side I was so sad. Plus we spent a lot of money. Super overpriced. I knew something was wrong when this place is not bustling with customers on a weekend. As we left the place I heard a man tell his friend in Korean avoid this place the food stinks. The tofu soup place is way better decently priced and portions are huge. This was a long awaited visit to what has been teed up around town as a must have meal... Korean fried chicken at Bonchon! The synopsis- it was good - it was weird! The last time I heard NO from the a server at meal I was 5 and my dad made dinner because my mom was at work! No extra sauce allowed, no naked chicken with sauce applied by at will, no sauce to go. I heard NO so many times, I was shocked when I was told yes ;) It's odd, if one orders chicken to go, which I saw a ton of being picked up, it all comes sauces... so after you arrive home your special Korean crispy chicken will be nice and Not Crispy... The food: The chicken which I selected was the boneless tenders- large portion pretty reasonably priced! Here's the first weird part! The chicken come three ways... either, spicy, garlic soy or half and half. I ask, my I have small sample of the spicy to try it first. Answer- No. For a Korean it's not spicy I was told by the server... Great... I'm Italian so that's not a great point of reference for me as you can imagine :) I was not that spicy, more sweet at first with the heat coming after in the back of your mouth. I also tried some kimchee which was just ok, in terms of the kimchees I've had... not too bright or flavorful with a mainly a lite chili flavor. Salad was very large and fresh with a very light ginger dressing. That's staff was nice, but definitely restrained by al the rules! They again- very nice, but they need a lot of work on customer service... I'm not sure if it was cultural differences that made it different but the service was just odd and and really clunky. All in all... I'll go back for another shot, but not sure if it's worth the Rules, and I know there are Korean restaurants in that same row that are very good too, so I'm at a bit of a quandary here... chicken with rules their way, and good Korean, but some many choices nearby make this a challenge. We stopped by this restaurant to try their Korean fried chicken. The staff was friendly and helpful and the chicken was delicious. We noticed that they only serve wings and drumsticks so we went with their small combo - 3 drumsticks and 6 wings. They offer two sauces - spicy and soy garlic. We did half our order with each sauce. Both were good but the spicy wasn't very spicy, which I was okay with but a spicy food lover might be disappointed by. We liked that the coating was crispy and the sauce wasn't sticky and didn't soften the coating. The combo came with choice of coleslaw or pickled radish. We tried the radish and enjoyed it. There are a number of al alacarte sides to choose from. There were also other non fried chicken entree options. If you want to try something different I definitely recommend giving Bonchon a try. read more

Came here for lunch today and ordered soy garlic boneless wings with pickled radish. Unfortunately, the boneless chicken wing was very disappointing, the 10 pieces of "nuggets" were tiny and had heavy breading. The sauce was just soy sauce and did not taste any garlic flavor. The best part of the lunch was the pickled radish which was excellent and refreshing. Although I couldn't be sure, but the boneless chicken wings didn't taste like fresh made, instead it tasted like frozen chicken nuggets with heavy coating. I was craving Korean food so I decided to try this place. Consistently good ratings & recommendations led me here. I walked in & the door was still open when a girl screamed at me "what do you want?" Spicy were so spicy they burned my mouth so I coudln't eat them. Soy tasted SWEET which I won't eat. So I spend $17,50 with tax and I can't eat the foods. I have been waiting for this location to open for a long time. Bonchon is a chain chicken joint I was introduced to on the east coast years ago. I fell in love with their crispy fried chicken. I don't know what they do to their chicken---the skin is extra crispy but the meat still retains its juiciness. It's addictive. We ordered the 20 piece wings, half spicy and half soy garlic. Perfect for 2 adults. Drink it with beer and you'll never go back to another combination. Beer pairs perfectly with this chicken. The kimchi fried rice is not something I would order again--the rice they used was a non-sticky rice, and I'm use to sticky rice for that dish. It's their soft opening this week--open for dinner only and no carryout available this week. Our server, Nathan, was excellent--attentive and friendly. This restaurant is going to be making a killing--I hope they are ready for the crowds once they officially open. read more

Went with family on Valentine's Day for their soft opening n as you can imagine the place was packed and we were on a wait list. Waited about 35 min and it was worth the wait! Plus they serve beer!! It could def be a meal for 3 kids with some fries! Daughter n I (vegan) ordered the onion rings, dolsot (stone bowl) tofu bibimbop (no egg) n "tteokbokki" (or ddukbokki) with no cheese. Although the tteokbokki was made with some fish cake in it n the sauce was prob made of a fish stock base, we ordered it n just ate the rice cakes. Super spicy but such a good burn! N my daughter loved the crunchy rice on the bottom of the bibimbop bowl!! Seasoned fries were great!! Sis-in-law said pork belly buns were delish!! N my bro loved the spicy heat from the "bulldak". Cant wait to go back n try to have them toss some of that fried tofu from the bibimbop in their chicken sauces!!! And try some other dishes vegan style!! Service was what really impressed me. Our 1st time at Bonchon in the US. We have tried is in another country years ago before they brought it here. So we had an idea of what to expect, mainly some korean style fried chicken. Yum. And on a whim and a swift turn at the traffic light we spontaneously decided to have a late dinner here. The place is small, so on a weekend night, its not unusual to wait for available seating. I wasnt sure how to have us lined up for the wait so I told the 1st worker i saw that we would like a table for 2. This was the guy at the registrar, he told me to write my name and will call me when a table is available. But now here comes something confusing. While im writing my name on the list, a lady comes in from behind and also asks for a table for 2. The guy then looks around and asks if she doesnt mind the high chair table. Wait a minute. Fortunately, this kind lady points out that I was first. (Thank you ma'am.) So not to ruin a happy moment, i brush it off, i dont tell my wife, and we accept the high chair seats where we share a table with another pair. The menu is short and simple with pictures of each order. Everthing looks quite appetizing, but we're here for what they're known for. The chicken. We order a small order of chicken 9pcs=4 wings+3 drumsticks(half spicy/half soy garlic) and one japchae (good for two). Btw, note that it is made to order so expect a long wait... Our japchae came at around 15mins and the chicken...well...i timed it, 39 mins. The japchae was ok, imo i wouldnt boast about. But the chicken was pretty good. Crisp on the outside. And well coated. Our server though brought our food and sputtered something soo quickly we didnt understand a word. So i had to ask someone which was the soy garlic chicken and which was spicy. On a bright day i guess a clue would be the soy chicken is slightly darker than the spicy. It was night though and ambience was a bit dark. Back to the chicken, spicy has a really good kick to it. Almost to the level of 'what chicken?'. And i do enjoy spicy food. The soy garlic has a small kick to it, but i know some people who cant handle the tinsiest of heat. So heads up. All in all, the food was good, the ambience was ok, but without writing another 1000 words to explain, the service of our particular assigned server was very poor. No names (unless management asks), but she is the reason why I only gave 3 stars. When people go out to eat, they expect to have a good time, and at least, decent service. Thats why when we enjoy, most customers would love to return. I observed several instances that made me question why she was working there. In short, she has deflected any idea of me and my wife from returning here. Im very sorry, but this is how she made us feel. I've heard a lot of great things about this place and finally got the chance to try it this past week. I went on a Thursday so the place wasn't packed and we were seated immediately. We got a large size of the mixed flavor chicken as well as the japchae, which was perfect for four people. Both the soy and spicy flavors were delicious though I preferred the spicy, as I felt the soy flavor was a bit to sweet. The spicy flavor isn't terribly hot but does build up after several pieces, so be careful if you're not that great with spiciness. I read other reviews citing bad service, but our server was actually so sweet and attentive! Our waters were always full and she was always available when we had questions. That being said, we did go during a less busy time so things might be different over the weekends. Overall a positive experience. Bonchon offers delicious chicken at an affordable price and I'd highly recommend it! read more

Updated review 8/18/20 - not sure if it's because of Covid but the size of the wings have literally been cut in half. We were super disappointed to see how small the wings were in our order today when we compared it to the past 3 times we ordered from here. Unfortunately, the price for the size of the wings is simply not worth it for us anymore. Great wings. The spicy is pretty damn spicy, so be careful. The bulgogi tacos are also a hit in our family. However, the regular bulgogi by itself with white rice is not worth the price you pay for it. So keep that in mind. Definitely will keep ordering for the wings though! read more

I have been to this location roughly 7 times in the past year. Each time, I have to order the spicy wings. They are consistently delicious with the perfect amount of crisp and spice. If you're not one to do well with spice, I would advice against this. The only problem with this location is service. Too often I'd have to call back, revisit, or just settle because they got my order wrong. I haven't had a problem with them resolving the issue, but it's something I need to be more careful with every order. read more

I went there with my cousin on Sunday little past 12. We were one of the two tables that were there. We ordered Takoyaki, Japchae, and mixed Combo 6 Wings 3 Drums. Took about 20 minutes wait for our first dish to arrive. Japchae was serve first. Presentation wise it looked soggy but still tasted good. Then came burnt Takoyaki balls (first pic of a single ball) All of them looked completely burnt like they were forgotten in the fryer. After taking a bite it was clear that it was burnt and that's when we both agreed to send it back. While the food was being remade the waiter came to notify us that it would take about 8 minutes for it to be ready. Now I work at a restaurant and our small-medium size egg rolls takes 4-6 minutes to fry. So... idk why those balls got to swim in the oil for that long. Anyways... the second plate came and it looked exactly the same but this time it was just covered in more sauce. Maybe it was 1 minute less tan but still THE SAME as the one before. At this point my mouth is burning from the spicy wings and stomach getting full so we just left it at that. Wish the staff were more professional without AirPods in hanging on their ears but other than that the semi cold wings were great! And this is only my second time here. Almost forgot to mention the rice! It was hard and crackly. Those little grains were dehydrated that's what my cousin and I joked about while we had them. It was definitely yesterday's rice. After that we just hoped tables after us would get fresh rice. Thank goodness the first I came with aunt and cousin the food was better. This was my first time to Bonchon Glenview Location. My husband has raved about the food since his Visit with Family in San Jose Ca. Over a year ago. The food is packed with Flavor! Absolutely worth the wait! My taste buds are going insane! It is so incredibly Delicious! The Staff is very Courteous, Friendly & did such a very good Job. The owner Johnny made a point to visit with his Guests. Also, a very nice touch. I was so eager to try the food, I didn't take any pictures. I should have the food presents as good as it tastes! This place has Awesome food! I was in town on business and I had never heard of this place before. They are very Welcoming! The girl at the register came out from behind the counter to explain the menu. My first thought was the price seems a little high but I found out the food was better then I ever imagined. I ordered a small spicy chicken combo and spicy chicken tacos. This was the best fried chicken I've ever had. Tacos are definitely spicy but the toppings offset nicely. I spoke with the owner about the chicken being so much different from what I've ever had and he told me they only use fresh chicken every day and something about the temperature it's cooked at. Yes, I could confirm that the wings are delicious and addictive. Crispy, juicy wings in a light airy batter. It really is about the method. So good! The cole slaw is a great side for the sweet spicy sauce. The soy garlic is a must try too. The service here definitely needs work. First time, I waited way to long for my order that I phoned ahead. No urgency just an "it's coming" no apologies...just "it's coming". It was torture sitting there hungry and smelling the food. 30mins later, I received my order. Second was turned away at 815p. They wouldn't take my 60 piece order because they said it wouldn't cook them in time. They close at 9p. Third, what do you mean you don't put sauce on the side? If I want sauce on the side, give me sauce on the side. If I have to travel to bring these wings to a further destination, I don't want them soggy. Thought I was doing the wings justice. Oh boy. Well. At this point you should be able to tell I really love Korean food and Korean fried chicken. And Bonchon has been fairly reliable comfort food through the quarantine. But. Man. We've had two pretty disappointing experiences and I think we're gonna hang up the Bonchon hat for a bit. The delivery packaging has all been terrific. The food usually arrives warm and is fresh and crispy about 50% of the time. So. That's pretty good! The food is never not tasty. But. The last two times the consistency has been really disappointing. The last time we ordered, the chicken seemed smaller. This most recent time, half the chicken was about a third the size of the chicken strips we normally get. And we order here every other week. But since it was only about half the strips, we could lay them out next to each other. I was going to take pictures but also I don't want to seem like a chicken strip conspiracy theorist. We were just really disappointed in the lack of consistency across the chicken strips. And we order here often and we've never encountered this issue. The sizing has always been uniform. We've also tried most of the non-chicken dishes and they've all been great. But. I'd avoid the Bibimbap. Extra 3 or 4 dollars for literally 4 strips of bulgolgi. Fried egg. Bean sprouts. And a bunch of shredded lettuce. Which. Obviously I'm not Korean but I've never encountered that. Anyway. Menu says quinoa and a sauce are included but we didn't see that either. Thankfully We have a bottomless vat of gochujang at home so we fixed that. All in all, it seemed incredibly skimpy and unfulfilling for 15$. I'll probably return some day. We ordered online for pick up. When we arrived to pick it up, the pork buns we ordered were not there but we were still charged for it. The person there said they could not issue a refund because I ordered it online. This is the first the first time I've heard of it that an establishment cannot make refunds for something we did not receive. First, they did not call us informing that there were no more pork buns. Second, if I did not ask, they did not tell me I was charged for it. Anyway, they called the manager and I was told I will receive an ema for the refund. I called the following day and was told, I'll be refunded. Still manager is not around because the person I taked to said he just comes and goes to the restaurant. Third call I talked to the manager and I was offered that they will just give me free pork buns next time I come back to Bonchon. He said that the owner would not be happy to know that they made a mistake in the order and therefore they are avoiding doing refunds. Still I requested for a refund and he said he will give the refund next week. Next week??? Unfortunately, still no email or refund was made or given as promised. We love Bonchon, but I dont think we will be going to this branch. Poor service. They did not even include utensils in the bag even if we requested it in our online order. It is just a small amout but it is a matter of principle and integrity and good customer service. They just apologize online. No action made. It's been a month and no refund still. read more
