After reading the reviews, I was a little skeptical as I am from Texas and BBQ just does not get any better than que from the south, especially from Texas or Tennessee. I am partial to Salt Lick, which like Bone Heads, is located out in the country in Texas where people from all over, come here to dine. I knew going into Bone Heads that I would not have the same experience. However, it was worse than I thought. FYI, if you have a large party like we did, it is best to call ahead for a reservation. Sarah was our waitress and my sister had her as her waitress before and mentioned how nice she was, but the niceness quickly became fake nice as she was swamped. Trust me, I have been a flight attendant for 19 years and I know fake nice when I see it. It seemed that maybe someone called in sick and they were short staffed because Sarah had about 6-7 tables to herself. As a party of 9, we had a large order and it took awhile which is acceptable and understandable. What's not acceptable was the fact that my nephew's grilled cheese lacked the melted cheese as it was partially melted. The cornbread was cold and while I am not sure if this was done by design, it was unpleasant and tasted like jiffy mix. Disgusting! My chicken was warm but not hot and after a few bites, I was done. It was surprising to see that they only had one type of sauce. What kind of bbq joint only has one type of sauce and a sweet sauce at that!? I thought that the mac and cheese would be better since you have to order it as a separate side; NOT! When you deliver mac and cheese and the cheese on top is hardly melted, that's a problem. The best thing about this meal was the fried pickles and even they were sub par unless you like tons of breading. read more

I recently decided to surprise my husband by taking him to Bonehead's on his birthday (a Wednesday night). I am SO glad I did! Our waitress was just-right attentive. We ordered the deep-fried pickle chips and they were outstanding! We couldn't believe they are served in a metal bucket that seemed to have no bottom! They come with a ranch-like dip and were so addictive we had to set them aside to not spoil dinner! (thank goodness for carryout!) I ordered the Rib Tip Dinner with cajun fries and beans. It came with a corn muffin and was mouth-watering wonderful! My husband ordered the Rib Eye Steak, medium rare and it perfection! He ordered it smothered with onions and mushrooms. The steak was huge too! We let the waitress know it was his birthday and she offered a free dessert. He picked a chocolate sundae and she packed it for him to go! The building itself is absolutely charming. We arrived just before 5pm and within ten minutes the dining room was filing up. We were pleased to see so many families arrive. The bathrooms are large and clean and easily accessible. My husband and I have been searching for a great rib & steak restaurant since we moved to the area and we have found it in Bonehead's! We will go back again and again. You can tell it's a great "rib joint" because when we left, the parking lot was full of pickup trucks! If you love Barbecue and a flavor of home cooking, I dont think you will be disappointed. The server we had was fantastic, attentative and very busy. Despite the rush hour she made every attempt to greet, order and serve her very best. However, the entry host was spreqd to far and wasn't able to manage a front of house organizational structure to arrivals. This lead to some tension as guests arrived about what the order was, and why some arrived and seated themselves. Probably not an issue at other than rush hour dinner. The food was good, but my Brisket was dry and over cooked requiring sauce to flavor. Far from my Slow's experiences. The Rib tips were more moist, but relied on sauce to flavor. My sweet potatoe was smaller than average, but my wife's was average. So, I was happy with the overall experience, but I would expect to pay less for the quality of food on this visit. Stopped in last night as I was on that side of town for a change. The parking lot was pretty full, so I thought it had to be a good sign. This place is in the middle of NOWHERE. I can only imagine their business relies heavily on locals & bikers (as evidenced by the number of Harleys in the lot!). The service wasn;t that great. Rushed & impersonal. The place wasn't that busy inside, so I'm not sure where all the cars were from in the lot. The decor is very "Route 66" roadside diner-ish. Interesting, but certainly not imaginative or exciting. I ordered the "Combo" so I could sample a variety of their offerings. This consisted of 1/3 slab of ribs, 1/4 smoked chicken, pulled pork, & smoked brisket all glazed with their BBQ sauce. It came with cornbread, cole slaw, a small sampler of baked beans, & french fries. Yep, that ought to cover it... The side dishes were uninspired and just run of the mil. I got the feeling the baked beans could have been spectacular, but I only got about 2 spoonfuls so it was hard to tell. Skip the fries and go with one of their other offerings. Now for the BBQ. The brisket was OK, a little drier than I like, and not so tender. The ribs were OK, done just a tad past falling off the bone, but better than a lot of places in the area. The chicken was good, cooked well & not too much or too little. The puled pork was a pile of pulled pork. Who serves &/or eats just a pile of pork like this? That's like slamming down a ladle of spaghetti sauce on a plate & calling it a meal. Try including a bun, roll, etc. next time. Now for the whammy...the sauce. It's was lifeless & boring. I was prepared to be blown away, and I certainly was not. It was surprisingly dull & flavorless. I don't like a bold, overpowering sauce, but I like some flavor! I can;t say I'd go out of my way to go back to Boneheads, which I'd have to do considering it's location. For folks not from the area...this place has a similiar vibe as Johnny Rebs in Long Beach. Based in an cool old building on the side of the road with a gravel lot to park with signs all over with skulls and pigs and bones. I ordered the bbq brisket (some pieces were tender and juicy but most were overcooked and dry). Friends ordered ribs which looked tough and dry too. Also saw a few pulled pork sandwiches which were shredded to nothing but mush. The place is cool and menu looks promising but the food was not that great. Ive had better. read more

Okay Bone Heads! You KILLED it the other day! We are locals and had a really disappointing time during our first visit here. We let the owners know and they asked us back for a second try. We buzzed in under the radar for our second visit and it was nice. Not super duper, but nice. A couple nights ago we stopped in for dinner with our two young boys. Let me say that I ate so much I thought my husband would have to ROLL me to the car. Everything was WONDERFUL!!! We were seated right away by a courteous hostess. Our waitress came right to our table and took our drink orders. BAM! Drinks on the table and our orders were taken. 10 minutes later...BOOM!!! Our food was out. I ordered the brisket dinner. It was so delicious. I love the garlic mashed redskins and I wish the baked beans came in a bigger size. My husband ordered ribs and he gobbled them up so fast that his face was covered in sauce. The kids ordered off the kids menu and both really enjoyed their meals. Thank you Bone Heads for caring about your business and showing us what a great place you can be! read more

I was being taunted by the Call of the Mighty Meat Horn, it's call of MEEEEEEAAAAT beckoning from afar. So when a friend suggested BBQ for dinner, I suggested we try Bone Heads. As others know, the pickle chips are the thing to eat. I'm long since a fan of fried pickles but these were absolutely awesome. I'm not sure what's in that batter but it may be related to opiates. They weren't greasy, the batter was light, and they were definitely addictive. Our waitress first appeared to be kind of flighty, but it turned out she was just new and a little flustered. Our service didn't lack, however, and drink refills were brought without us having to ask. Bonus. We both got the full slab of ribs. This was a mistake, only because there was just so much food. I'm not the hugest fan of fall-off-the-bone ribs -- I prefer my ribs to have a little 'bite' to them -- but these were so tasty I could look past the difference. Along with the giant hunk of piggy came some mayo-based cole slaw -- also not a favorite, I prefer vinegar based, but still very tasty, a small bit of baked beans, and some corn bread. One of the two giant hunks of corn bread was fairly well browned, but still moist and yummy. You also get a choice of a side. We both picked fries, which were ok. Not bad, just nothing special. At one point the waitress suggested we leave room for their ice cream & cookie dessert concoction because the cookies had just come out of the oven. Were we smart we should have stopped and taken the rest of Babe home in boxes, but we weren't and so we ate that little piggy all up. No dessert for us, we were ready to explode. The entrance and insides are handicapped accessible. I didn't get a chance to see how accessible the restroom is, but it was easy to get to them. There is one 'handicapped' spot in their dirt lot, and it's poorly signed. The customers are an interesting mix of bikers [the motorcycle kind], families, and regular shmoes. Afterwards we discussed strategy for another visit. Skip the pickle chips to make room for dessert? But they're so good! We decided that the right way to do it is the same way to attack a churrascaria -- don't eat anything else before going. We ate @ the Pickle Barrel occasionally, but have migrated over to Boneheads with the new owners. We have always found the food very good to excellent. Our waitstaff has always been friendly and courteous. One of my personal faves is their incredibly delicious french onion soup; hearty, brothy, flavorful, & smothered in cheese. A must order & some of the best I have ever enjoyed. The Trotter is a wonderful piece of beef cooked to order and presented delightfully & tastes exquisite. Do not be afraid to order the BBQ Sunday, a delicious blend of pulled pork, spicy beans, & mashed potatoes. Yum! Today was Father's Day & my son recommended Boneheads for dinner. The 3 of us answered the bell & gladly found seating inside. My son & I ordered the ribeyes (mine included the shrimp, but he opted for the french onion soup) & Pam ordered the Bonehead Platter with chicken, beef brisket, pulled pork, & ribs. The homemade coleslaw was incredibly good & fresh. Kelly was our waitperson & extremely attentive & outgoing. The ribeyes were awesome - cooked to medium rare perfection. A well marbled & delicious 16 oz. cut of beef that we were unable to completely finish at the restaurant, but travelled home with us as a doggie bag treat, Pam also was unable to finish all her plate offered her & joined the styrofoam brigade. Co-owner Niki greeted us as we were leaving & thanked us for choosing Boneheads. I was happy with this establishment until we were sitting in the restaurant and say a mouse run across the floor. I'm praying I have never eaten any droppings in my previous visits. The staff did not handle this in a manner that gave us a feeling as they cared, it was quite the contrary. They stated, "We're located in the country and that's what you should expect". This was as my whole dinner party was holding their feet up and preparing to leave. They did not apologize or offer to give us a discount. I can't believe how uncaring they acted. When binging on as many House of Cards episodes as we were, it was bound to happen. We needed RIBS. We did not want to travel to far and low and behold this place was just around the block! Reviews looked great so we drove on over to check it out. I have to admit that upon pulling into the gravel parking lot and meeting eyes with the local diners I thought that maybe this would be a bit different from what we are familiar. It was a Sunday night and the place was packed. We ordered the BBQ sampler and a full rack of ribs. Every side, piece of lettuce and slab of meat was fantastic. The ribs were seasoned with a dry rub and sauced just the right amount. The collard greens were spicy, savory and sweet. Not to mention these platters fed us for days. We were driving North on US23 when my BDGF said "I am starving. Let us eat." As luck would have it, that was just as I saw a sign that said "Bone Heads BBQ. Five miles that way." So we took a chance. And we were immediately glad we did. The place is in the middle of nowhere, but quirky and friendly as the best of such places tend to be. The food was well above most Michigan BBQ I've had - especially the beans. Not since Texas have I had better beans. They also have Michigan beer on tap, which to me goes a long way in saying, "We're here for you, Tyler B." So take a chance, it's worth the drive out to the sticks. read more

The best BBQ in Ann Arbor might be ... 15 miles to the southeast in Willis. My husband and I stopped in for dinner for the first time tonight, and we are already big fans. The food is great, reasonably priced, and the service is friendly. My husband got the ribs platter and I ordered the BBQ salad, with pulled chicken on top. His meal came with coleslaw, a very small side of baked beans, and garlic mashed potatoes, and he ordered a side of mac and cheese. My salad was essentially a garden salad with black beans and corn, cheese and tortilla strips, and came with a homemade BBQ ranch dressing.The honey BBQ sauce was outstanding - my husband normally doesn't like sweet sauces, and he loved this. The nice thing about the menu, too, is that they do offer non-BBQ foods, likes burgers made with Knight's meat and steaks, so you aren't limited to smoked meats. We'll definitely be back! I am a French onion soup junkie, and Boneheads' is some of the best around. The pulled pork is great, and the ribs are very good. One of my favorite things at Boneheads is the cornbread- so good!! I have never had any issues with the service. I did get carry out the other day and they did not give me the cole slaw or the cornbread that was included with the meal, and that is disappointing when paying $20 for an entree. read more

However, this does not seem like a BBQ restaurant. Yes they serve BBQ, but I wonder if any of their meats are smoked? This seems more like a family restaurant that serves a couple of BBQ entrees. On my most recent visit, I tried the brisket. It was ok. I have also had the pulled pork sandwich and was disappointed. I would go there again, but would never choose it on my own. This is another restaurant on the fence between a 3 and 4 star for me. I would like to try a few more dishes in the future to be sure. Some of the highlights: The location is neat. I love the country cross-roads where the restaurant is located. Being relatively close to the metro area - this sort of takes you away from it all for a minute. I like the elder building setting and the history behind the location. All very intriguing. The inside has a very rustic feel and it is definitely a small town kind of place. I had the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and the brisket on separate occasions. The food was tasty and had a decent flavor to it. The pickle chip appetizer (a notable favorite to those initially prompting me to visit) was a nice start as well, Beans are reallly really good. Mac N Cheese was tasty and seemed homemade. The owners were present on our first visit and they were very interested in us as customers. Caring. Wanted to make sure we felt welcomed. They took the time to talk with us and give us the background on the restaurant. All very inviting Prices are average for what you would expect. Being critical: One thing I have noticed both times I was there is the service is rather spotty. It took a long time to have anyone acknowledge us to start - and that was simply to get a drink order started. They have a lot of young waitresses who just seem aloof at staying on top of everything. Our first visit - we actually had one of the cooks get us started with our pitcher of beer after sitting there for so long. Probably not what you are paying him for..... Although the food is good and worth the visit - I can't say it is spectacular (as friends had stated - and which lured me to start). I was just not blown away either time I have dined to date. That is not to say it isn't a good meal - I'm just not seeing the "rah rah" behind it. Further - they only have one type of BBQ sauce (that I have understood / could tell) and it is average to me. Nothing I need to rush home and tell others about. The portions are bit skimpy - particularly side items. You get a small tartar sauce cup size and eat them in just a few bites. Last - the first time we dined they had their radio on and it was upbeat and good music. Until the CD (or whatever it was) began skipping......and skipping......and stayed skipping..........and no one did anything...............and it kept skipping.......on and on. I wanted to beat my head into a wall. Must have been 20 minutes (not joking) and finally one of the waitresses awoke to the problem. ??? The next time through - it was about as quiet as could be in there. Felt almost dead. They had some college games on - but the TV's were hard to see, no volume, etc. It is like this place has a hard time identifying as a bar vs. being a restaurant and the environment just can't quite find itself. I know it is minor - but sometimes you go out to eat as much for the atmosphere as you do the food. Overall - this is another place I hope will continue to thrive and I truly want to like. *Update: After coming here on several occasions for carry out, I decided to take 2 stars off. The reason for this is because the consistency on the food isn't always spot on. We were driving on 94 and saw a giant billboard for this place. I figured if they could afford the billboard, they must be kind of a big deal or something. We arrived and placed an order to go. For the appetizer, we ordered the Onion Ring Tower and the Fried Pickle Chips. For dinner, we ordered the Rib Tips Dinner that came with Cole slaw, corn bread, and a baked potato which I added the loaded version with butter, sour cream, bacon, scallions, and cheese. The loaded version costs $1.99 more. We also ordered the Beer Battered Walleye with cole slaw and sweet potato fries. The Onion Rings Tower were real onions cut up and battered. They stayed crispy the entire time until reheated. Even then, it was still very good. The Fried Pickle Chips were delicious and the batter was about the same as the onion rings. The Rip Tips Dinner was tender, and they fell off the bone pretty easily. The barbecue sauce that it was marinated in wasn't too strong but just perfect for my taste. The Loaded Baked Potato was as good as you can get. Their Cole slaw and Cornbread was okay. I usually don't like Cole slaw in general nor do I like Cornbread, but they both were fine to eat. I only tried a little bit of the Beer Battered Walleye and it was decent. My husband seemed to enjoy it. His Sweet Potato Fries were simple. The place wasn't too packed, but it had enough people going in and out of the place. Carry out was really fast and easy. I even bought a White Chocolate Skull Sucker for a dollar which is donated to charity. Everything we had seemed and tasted fresh. We will most likely return. read more

Had the Boneheads BBQ combo, that comes with ribs, chicken, pulled pork and beef brisket. I will have to say the meats were nicely cooked, except for the pulled pork that was a little bit mushy. The menu says they smoke the meats, but I could not really taste any smoke flavor or verify a smoke ring on the meats. I still thought it was pretty tasty though. The dinner came with coleslaw, a sample of baked beans, cornbread and a choice of another side. The sides were all good. Did not really care for the BBQ sauce, to sweet and molasses flavored for me, reminded me of a commercial sauce. All in all I would return if I was ever in the area again. read more

I love this place. I might be biased because I live just 5 min north of it, and it is my de-facto-go-to BBQ place. I just love coming here on a summers evening, bringing family or friends and eating delicious BBQ. Have brought small groups out here and everyone left very happy, can honestly say that out of all the times I've been here, only once has it been unsatisfying due to our waiter being missing in action most of the night, and then apologizing for whatever caused it. Our second time here. First time was fantastic. The owner came over introduced herself to us and made sure that everything was perfect the entire time we were there. This time Saturday evening, the owner must not be here. The server took our drink order as soon as we sat down. Then she seemed to forget about us. She took two food orders at tables next to us from people that sat after we had our drinks. Then her friends came in. Hugs went around...still no order. She brought her friends their drinks then took our order. Here's the deal. We were impressed enough to come back out of our way. Getting ignored by a server is unacceptable. You lost a customer. FOREVER!!!! We will only tell people of the way the servers work when the owner is not there. I don't care if it is this girls first day on the job or her 200th. She sucks as a server and should be canned. Oh wait...as I am writing this both those tables that ordered before us got their food. Once we got our food she never came back to see if our meal was OK. What a cool building and history of said building. I'd ordered the tips with greens and green beans and cornbread. The beans and greens were fandamtastic, the tips were slightly overcooked and tough, one of the tips was perfect and if all were like this we would bump the stars up. Nice beer menu had Alaskan Amber which was really good. Good place to eat. Quaint restaurant, in a quaint town. Good seating and I had good service. Good ribs for this area and not very expensive. Other dishes such as wings are also good. The pickles are something special and deserve the kudos in other reviews. I like to cook and I have not been able to duplicate their taste. I like Memphis style ribs and they don't quite compare but to me, Memphis is my basis for comparison for all BBQ style. This is a nice place to go and have a family dinner or if you don't feel like going out, Boneheads has pick-up orders. Nice option. I recommend Bonehead's. read more

The Bo & I were craving some BBQ, but did not want to travel far from Ann Arbor. Of course I had to get some help from my fellow Yelpers to decide where to go. A quick search and I chose to drive 20 minutes out to Bone Heads BBQ. The restaurant was very busy for dinner time and all the tables were full, so we decided to sit at the bar closest to a Keno machine?! I ordered a tequila sunrise to start off, and it was tasty, but there was a stench of something that I couldn't stop noticing. I think it was maybe moisture from the carpets behind the bar? Just a fair warning that if you would be the type to notice that, then just wait for a table. On to the food! I got the Bone Heads BBQ platter ($20) and the Bo got a pulled chicken sandwich. He really liked his sandwich very much and thought it was even better than the pulled pork that came with the platter. Unlike me, he likes pulled pork, but thought the texture of this pulled pork was a bit mushy. The ribs also had some good seasonings on it, but I just wished it was more tender. The brisket was also good, definitely better than most BBQ places I have been, but that doesn't say much since I've only been to a handful of BBQ joints. The best thing here would have to be the baked beans, and this says A LOT since I am not a huge lover of beans in general, but damn were these beans delicious! I only got a small sampling with the platter, so I suggest ordering extra! Don't forget to ask for the hot sauce! It's actually spicy and also flavorful! Good food and even more interesting is the history of the building...it's haunted!?! My husband and I kinda gave up on this place a while back due to spotty service. I had 4 friends coming into town from Grand Rapids, and wanted something "local". Seeing as "local" in Belleville is a 6 mile drive with only 2 street lights, Boneheads is where we headed. It was PACKED when we got there! We didn't have to wait but a few minutes to get our party of 6.5 seated. It was Friday night, and they had beer-battered cod as well as prime rib on special. We all ordered drinks, as well as the pickle chips as an appetizer. They were hot and fried golden brown- just wish that so many of them weren't stuck together. The guys got some large beers, which they appreciated. All 3 of us got sangrias- 2 of us had peach which came in the big goblet- and 1 got the blackberry sangria which came in a tiny wine glass. The waitress said that since the blackberry one had more alcohol or something, it was served as a smaller size. I think that my feedback would be to just price the blackberry sangria accordingly if it has more alcohol- because my friend was sad she got such a smaller portion as compared to the peach one. Our food came out relatively quickly- my husband and I each got one of the specials- I had the fish and he had the prime rib. Both were very tasty and picture perfect. My fries were a bit MEH, just lacking flavor. Even salt didn't help that much. I was a bit dissapointed in the mac and cheese I got a side of- I remember it being tasty, but this time it just wasn't that great. I'm sure that we'll be going back again in the future now that we've had a better experience. By 9pm the place was dead- so that's probably a good time on Friday to avoid the crowds. read more

Pickle Barrel has really good Food BUT I've Givin them 3 chances to improve their service and All I can say is wait staff is like a Tattoo ,a good Tattoo Ain't cheap, and Cheap Tattoo Ain't good !! Take it for what you will but when the owner decides to get some good Help in the place then maybe I will have another try at it but when all my friends confirm that it's not just me and they had the same experience that's why I give e them a 3 , my recommendation is to eat at the Bar then and only then will you get proper Service read more
