Not gonna say I love this place nor will I say I like this place. It's just OK. There are other great restaurants in Pasadena that I'd rather go to. I do love trying fusion restaurants, but I would rather go to a restaurant that specializes in a certain region or type of food. Also, they will automatically add 20% tip on your overall bill.
From the drinks to the food, everything tasted delicious. We didn't come with a reservation but we were seated immediately. We started with a passionfruit mojito and calamansi margarita - very tasty! Then we ordered the gule with chicken, sisig & nasi goreng with the ribeye medium rare and wow everything tasted amazing. We've actually been here before for brunch and everything was a hit as well - we'll definitely come back more to try other foods!!
Lovely lovely food in a warm intimate setting. I came here once a long time ago and remembered a nice hearty comfort meal in a modern atmosphere. This most recent visit, I came with my dog & toddler so the outside patio was perfect. The continuous stream of car & bus traffic drone out any excess noise my rambunctious toddler made. We ordered just a few things but everything was so good. I took a chance on the green beans and they were not disappointing. Bold in soy flavor but had a sweetness I really liked. The rendang carbonara was a creative and tasty dish but purists like my husband maybe won't appreciate it as much. My toddler DEVOURED the bone broth & noodles, and especially the beef that literally melted in the mouth. That dish is a must have every time. Looking forward to our next dinner here.
Real pleasant surprise to see so many positive reviews on the atmosphere (dark, dimly lit, romantic to fall in love with your food) and the cuisine! I wasn't looking for an authentic experience, I wanted fusion and flavors. My friend and I share a birthday week so we came here to celebrate and feel like gluttons. Here's everything we had: - Lychee dragonfruit lemonade $6 - nice and sweet - Papaya salad $18 - against our first instincts to go with the Thai steak salad (Green papaya, mangoes, tomatoes, chili, cilantro, green beans, green onions, peanuts, Tobiko, shrimp, garlic chips.) Not that much spice, tbh, and very few shrimp. Still good. - Tartare $26 (Charred hanger Steak, pickled mustard greens, shallots, chives, yuzu aioli, sesame rice crackers) Realistically at this point, someone should have told us to slow down. Portions are not overtly generous but they're large enough to share. - Bone Marrow $29 (Ginger scallion confit, sesame oil, baguettes, red endives, baby frisee, apples, pears, citrus dressing) Insane value for this price. I feel like any other restaurant would give you a single bone and you're given three here. The salad and baguettes pair well. Ask for a to-go bag for the bones and use them for your own broth the next day. - Oxtail dumplings* $18 (Oxtail, mushrooms, leeks, sesame, sorrel, San Bai Su, chili oil) Hands down the winner of the night, for the oxtail sauce. A mix of plum sauce, plum wine, vinegar, and addiction. Don't let them take the sauce away from you. Add it to white rice, your soup, dab a bit on your neck to attract divine spirits, etc. - The ramen made with 36-hour bone broth $24 5 oz. of artisanal ramen noodles, heirloom carrots, red onions & cilantro. We added 7oz brisket beef (sous vide for 12 hours with garlic, butter & herbs). Add a soft-poached egg for $3 (thanks to a random server walking by who cracked that open for me) and some white rice for $3 - rice paired well with our leftover oxtail sauce. Bone Kettle adds a 20% gratuity "service charge" to each bill to take care of the tip. I wish I'd brought cash to give an additional tip because everyone was that great. They offered recommendations freely and were always spot-on. So attentive to refilling beverages, as well. You can't add a charged tip to your bill at all, unfortunately! I'm pretty sure those oxtail dumplings re-arranged some molecules in my brain. I'm still thinking about them. I can sort of taste them if I close my eyes and click my heels together three times.
Food was good and really liked their selection for HH. I didn't realize we came in time for happy hour until the sever told us. Huge menu but felt a lot of the dishes were very salty. The menu options were definitely different but would have been better if less salty. I would not recommend the sticky rice dessert or the bone marrow butter bread. But the oysters were delicious!
We came here for a baby shower. I'm very impressed with the private room setting. It's a bright airy back room that allows a group of 30+ sitting comfortably. The open bar is great! The bar tenders were prompt and friendly. I love my lychee martini. It's a buffet style luncheon and we had a great variety of food: skewers, noodles, ox tail dumplings, cauliflowers, egg rolls and eggs. For the dessert station, delish French toast with blueberries and one with strawberries and cream. What a delightful place to host a small party. I will return ti try their regular menu.
I've come here on 3 separate occasions, but have yet to leave my thoughts on this place on yelp! The first time I came was because of a planned date and the other two occasions were to meet up with a friend. Food: I always order the bone broth noodle soup every time I come because it's what they are known for. They say the broth simmers for 36hrs. The broth is pretty flavorful. The beef is pretty tender. It's good, but I feel like I have had better around the 626 area. The food is presented well! The bone marrow is pretty tasty! Drink: I've tried a lychee drink here. The drinks are okay. They are aesthetically pleasing for sure as shown in the photos. However, it isn't mind-blowing. Service: All the waiters and staff were kind and attentive. They refilled our waters and brought our food out in a timely manner. Parking: It's going to be paid street parking most likely. Overall: It's definitely a nice, upscale staple around the 626 area. They charge a 20% gratuity fee automatically. The inside feels very cozy and classy. There is also an outdoor dining area in the back of the restaurant. There wasn't anything too special about the food though, in my opinion. For the price, everything tasted fine. I would come back if another friend suggests to meet up here!
Unique fusion restaurant. Menus change depending on if it's lunch time or dinner time. I wished there were clear details and explanations on the menu that said everything uses duck eggs. (I personally can't eat anything duck so the only thing I deliciously ate was the sourdough bread and butter.)
I got the chicken and top sirloin bone broth kettles, and the broth was sooo good and felt super healing. Both proteins were cooked well, tender and not tough or hard to chew. The inside is really nice and cozy, I liked how the seating along the wall had pillows. I also got the lumpia appetizer, and the sauce that comes with it is really good. One downside is that they automatically add a 20% gratuity. I didn't really appreciate that, especially since the service wasn't very attentive and they even spilled broth while pouring it into our bowls. I'm not a fan of restaurants shifting the responsibility of paying their staff onto customers.
Definitely had a lot of options in Pasadena but landed on this spot that serves 36 hour bone broth. The broth was so rich, so comforting. There was a good amount of noodles that were so bouncy. The beef was super tender. I needed to add the bone marrow, it was a little too much for me. Drawbacks of a solo diner is that there I can only order one main. Definitely highly recommend! I didn't have a reservation but was able to sit at the bar.
Walked in for 2 around 10:30 on Valentine's Day and was seated easily without resy outside! Service 5/5 The service was great and they checked up on us multiple times and gave me Thai chili when I asked for more spices. We ordered 2/5 -papaya salad: this was interesting, it tasted different than normal and felt like something was missing. I probably wouldn't order it again :/ - broth with brisket: this was honestly really disappointing. The bone broth didn't taste like anything special and the brisket was extremely dry to the point we didn't finish it. Not sure if we got a bad cut or if it was over cooked. -pistachio latte: this was great and not too sweet - vibe: the interior design is really pretty , and it looks like a great place to eat with friends or a date. However I probably wouldn't come back Service charge is 20% already included btw !
This place was recommended to me by a friend. I made easy reservations on Yelp and were seated quick once we got there. They didn't require the whole party to be seated which is a plus. The staff overall were great and the ambiance was dim and intimate. One gripe I had was that they offered still or bottled water, but wasn't given the tap option. My boyfriend, who was the only one at the restaurant, was clueless to this concept and said "still." At the end of the night, we were slapped with $7 a bottle on the bill. We had 4 bottles. I was so mad because he didn't know but they also didn't inform him that it was going to be $7 a bottle, otherwise he would have said no. I was wondering why no one ever came to fill our cups but now I know. It would have been nice if they were upfront about the cost. Granted most people who go to $$$ are aware of the cost but not cool to take advantage of the uninformed. Now to the food. I came with a large party so we all ordered a lot of different items and I was able to try a lot of them. -Ube Gnocchi $21 - This was sour for my liking. They were heavy on the lime and small in portion. I think the Gnocchi was well made but personally I would pass this. -Lechon $28 - this was HUGE but it should be for the price. The meat was tender and the flavors were nice. Good one to try. -Soto Betawi $32 - This was a interesting dish. It was a little heavy from the creaminess and oil. The short rib felt overcooked for me. It was hard and chewy. To try sure but I wouldn't order this again. -Rendang Carbonara $24 - This definitely felt like a classic pasta dish. I did enjoy the flavors on this one but again, I felt the short ribs were overcooked. If in the mood for noodles, I would recommend this one. I asked the rest of my party what they thought of the meal. It is a little pricier and we thought the food was just ok, nothing to write home about and probably wouldn't come again. Food presentation was great, ambiance is nice, staff were great, but food overall was average.
Love the modern yet cozy decor. We ordered the spicy papaya salad, crab benedict, duck and pandan waffles, and loco Moco. The food was tasty and the portions were very good. Prices were also very reasonable, especially for California. Everything overall was good, except the food did take a while. But our server was very friendly and apologized for the wait. I would definitely come back. And I do want to mention to look out for the 20% service charge that's already included on the bill, so don't double tip. read more
So delicious! A great upscale fusion restaurant. The broth was so addicting and the waiter was super friendly and attentive. The food was wonderful, but honestly can pass on the drinks. I don't think they were that good. read more

Seems to be a good hang out spot with friends. Asian fusion style. I just feel that they are trying hard to make the taste right but still didn't come out quite right. Some dish were too bland and some dish were too salty/sour. Not sure they intended to do that they combine well. The service was great. read more

This place felt like an upscale modern Asian eatery. The interior is simple and dim. It's located in Old Town Pasadena. The food is a mix of Southeast Asian dishes. We ordered 3 small plates and one main dish: 1) eggplant 2) fried oxtail tips 3) lumpia 4) rendang carbonara The portions were generous for the lumpia. We had leftovers. All the food was flavorful. The rendang carbonara was more like a stir-fry udon noodle dish with not a lot of meat. So if you are expecting meat, this is not the dish for you. I liked the poach egg on top, and it was flavorful. The women's bathroom needed some attention. One of the doors wasn't locking, and one stall was out of toilet paper. However because of these issues, I made a new friend! Most people were there for some sort of celebration or on a date. I think it's worth checking it out at least once. Service was excellent. I was there when it first opened, and this was my second time. The menu has changed which was welcoming to try something different. In my opinion, the intimate setting, modern minimalistic decor paired with small plates of flavorful food are the main reasons for its popularity. read more

We first visited this establishment a few years ago. We enjoyed the food but there were only a few patrons with us enjoying the restaurant's offerings. We happened to be in Pasadena for the weekend and decided to make a reservation. Reservations are highly recommended. It was a full house! We're glad that so many more people have discovered this gem. We ordered a lot for the two of us. I couldn't decide and wanted to try everything. We shared everything. I was just sad that we couldn't take home leftovers since we were staying at a hotel. Calamansi Margarita. I will now look for this on other bar menus. So refreshing. Paleokerisio Glinavos. Sparkling orange wine. Also light light and refreshing. It paired well with the food. Fried cauliflower. A new way to enjoy your veggies! Bone marrow. Delicious. One critique - I would have preferred less fluffy bread. Although toasted, I thought it was too fluffy to pair well with the bone marrow. I actually preferred eating it with the crackers that came with the bisque. Ube gnocchi. I was surprised by how much I liked this. I finished it and wished I had more. Kabocha bisque. The seething size was much larger than expected. The flavor of the bisque was so comforting and satisfying. I'm thinking this was my favorite of the meal. Bone kettle with brisket. The soup was so flavorful. The brisket melt in your mouth. I'm salivating as I type this. Cassava cake with Ube ice cream. It's almost like my mom's cassava cake but not quite. Almost! Ube crinkle cookie. I just wanted to try it. It's ok. Java martini. I could've ordered another one. This was an enjoyable meal. Make a reservation and and enjoy a night out in Pasadena! read more
The food here is good and the service is all right. I really liked the wonton and my friend really liked the beef. We ordered three things for two people and it was more than enough! The environment is also very ambient and the food came out very fast. Definitely recommend if you are looking for an Asian fusion place. read more
Had pretty high expectations but the food honestly didn't meet up to par ): My friends & I went to celebrate a birthday, and to start off the ambiance was great. I loved the beautiful setup of the restaurant with the warm, glowing lights and quiet classy vibes. Service was good, food came out fast and the server was nice. The two dishes I did like was the wagyu fried rice and garlic shrimp. The wagyu MELTED in my mouth, and complimented the sauce that came with it well. However, the dishes I thought was mid was the oxtail dumplings, blue crab toast and sisig. Something in all three dishes tasted a bit sour- not sure if that's how it's originally supposed to taste. I'm also not a huge fan of dumplings or crab so it might be a personal preference. Note that the portions were also TINY for a group of 5 girls- it's more like appetizer sized. Overall for the price point we probably will not be returning, but it was an okay experience. read more

The food is creative and a great sample of Southeast Asian cuisine. Great place for a fancy date! Warning: can easily get carried away ordering. Came on two occasions: a date and 5-person galentines. I don't remember much from the first time, but we did order a lot. We had the noodles with the wagyu meatballs and the broth was really good and warming. The meatballs were really tender. For the galentines, we ordered the following and it was enough for us! - mapo tofu fries - crispy! - sisig - also crispy! - Brussel sprouts - we liked the inclusion of pomegranate seeds - wings - 5 on a plate and my 1 wing was perfect! - rendang carbonara - duck confit - the skin was really crispy but didn't really taste the confit - nasi goreng - the best!!!! We got it with wagyu so we each got 2 pieces. It's on the fishy side, and I want to soak the rice in the sauce! Everything was good but mostly felt like something was missing/ out of balance? I would definitely recommend the Brussel sprouts, chicken wings, and nasi goreng! Don't be ashamed to order the fried rice! For drinks I had the lychee dragonfruit the first time and felt like it was overly sweet. That carries over to the second time. We had the desert pear lemonade, lychee dragonfruit, passionfruit guava, and a margarita (I think?) and everything was very sweet and syrupy. Some of us finished drinking our drinks before the main dishes came so it was mostly ice. The service was great, we were always hydrated. The staff were also helpful and funny with us deciding what to choose. 20% service charge which I think is right and good to make sure workers are paid! Their restroom is downstairs (which may be hard for physical accessibility) and have fancy hand dryers. For parking after 5pm, I recommend one Colorado a block away ($10 flat rate). read more

Garlic prawns: 4/5 Chicken wings: 2.7/5 Oxtail dumplings: 3/5 Sirloin noodle: 3/5 Customer service: 5/5 Ambience: 4.5/5 Best dish of the night was the garlic prawns. The entire thing was edible from neck down to tail. Very flavorful and crispy. Love the touch of basil leaves. The chicken wings were crispy and tender but nothing special. The oxtail dumpling was soft and juicy, very easy to chew and eat. The signature sirloin noodle was somewhat of a hybrid between a ramen and pho. The broth was much more pho like but the noodle along with the egg gave it a ramen touch. Very interesting dish. Not my favorite but I appreciate the effort. Customer service and ambiance is A+. An upscale Southeast Asian Fusion place but it's not truly real actual Southeast Asian Cuisine... definitely lacks the signature ingredient of real southeast Asian food, the spiciness! But overall not bad. read more
Bone Kettle has been on my bucket list for about 6 six years. Then I moved out of Los Angeles so it wasn't feasible to try Bone Kettle. Then I ended up moving back to Los Angeles 6 years later and immediately went to try Bone Kettle before I missed another opportunity. Bone Kettle blends the spices and flavor profiles from Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Philippines. I have a strong preference for flavors from this part of the world which was why I was drawn to Bone Kettle. Wow. Bone Kettle lived up to the hype and is probably one of the best meals I have ever had. I have paid hundreds of dollars for meals before that did not taste as good as Bone Kettle. Out of sheer luck, I ended up going to Bone Kettle during Dine LA week so I was able to try the prix fixe menu that was $55/person. My friend and I ordered a bottle of the barbera. There was a special list of Dine LA wine bottles for $29 and the bottles were either biodynamic or organic. What a steal!! The barbera was a nice dry red wine. I appreciate the focus on wines that are produced sustainably and without additional toxins. For the four course meal, my friend and I ordered: scallops, papaya salad with crab meat, ube gnocchi, fried prawns, braised oxtail (with extra bone marrow), chocolate bread pudding, and the passion panna cotta. Everything was tasty and plated beautifully. The stars of the show were: - scallops: so fresh they tasted like silky butter. I've never had seafood prepared so well in my life. - ube gnocchi: the flavors melded together so perfectly. There were cucumbers and mushrooms in the buttery, brown sauce. I drank all of the sauce because it was so divine. - braised oxtail: I've never had such flavorful bone broth. If this dish only came with the broth and no noodles/oxtail, I would have been a happy camper. The flavor profile is so deep and complex that the broth can stand on its own. - passion fruit panna cotta: WOW. The sweet, tanginess of the passion fruit gelee complemented the creaminess of the panna cotta perfectly. My friend and I left feeling so satiated. The ambiance is very calming and chic as well. Great for both a romantic date night or catching up with friends. With the added bone marrow and bottle of wine, the bill ended up being $100/person which is a STEAL because I felt like I was at a Michelin star restaurant. I'm not one to do pricey meals often, but, if I were to do it again, I would come back to Bone Kettle. I believe gratuity is automatically included which I appreciate because it relieves workers of the anxiety of wondering whether or not customers will tip them. Another reason why I appreciate the included gratuity is that waiters don't feel the need to suck up to customers in order to get a decent tip. You do you, boo. When I find things I love, I come up with a list of people that I want to share the experience with. I will definitely be back to introduce loved ones to the scallops, ube gnocchi, braised oxtail, and passion fruit panna cotta. read more
Came to Bone Kettle for dinner and it was absolutely delicious! It is always very busy, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation beforehand. The restaurant itself looks very modern yet cozy with the dimmed lighting. We ordered: 1. Fried Cauliflowers - We wanted to have some vegetables and this dish did not disappoint. The aioli was creamy and a little bit tart, and the pork floss balanced out the flavors by adding some savoriness. Overall, a really yummy bite! 2. Oxtail Dumplings - The dumplings come with a vinegar sauce that pairs perfectly with the super tender meat inside. A must-try when you come! 3. Broth with brisket - It was really cold outside, so we decided to get their noodle soup. The broth is really flavorful without feeling too heavy. We got ours with the brisket, and it was very very tender. We also got a poached egg on top, which you have to crack into the bowl yourself. Personally, the egg didn't add anything for me. The service was great too! They were constantly refilling our waters and checking on us. I would highly recommend coming to check this place out! read more

I loved Bone Kettle. The broth lived up to the hype for me. So delicious (and good for you!) We also ordered the fried cauliflower, sticky pork ribs and nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice). The fried rice portion is enormous and definitely worth the cost. $14 (with no protein) for 2 cups of fried rice. I will be eating that for lunch also haha. I want to come back here with a group so we can try more of the dishes. The next time I'm in Pasadena we will be stopping here for sure! read more

a few unfortunate things seem to have happened that's made my appreciation for this gem tank since the last time i visited. their menu seems to have changed quite a bit as have their recipes. the nasi goreng that is usually the object of my desires and the last thing i think about before falling asleep some nights is absolutely maimed. it used to be delectable but now resembles fried rice i could easily make in my own home (and i am a terrible cook). the vegetables seem to be of the frozen medley variety (only peas and carrots) if we're basing it off their sagging texture, and they no longer offer crab as one of the protein options! to make matters worse (although this was quickly rectified), they forgot to bring the fish sauce with chopped peppers when they initially brought out the dish and I was aghast that things could change so quickly. what gives, bone kettle? what happened? how can we get back to what used to be? i don't think i'll find myself drawn into slumber by thoughts of your nasi goreng any longer. read more
When in Pasadena you must try Bone Kettle! Every dish full of flavors, colors, texture, and delicious. A great place for a group as most dishes are shareable amongst friends. The restaurant does have the option for outdoor and indoor, but we opted for inside. We were sat towards the back of the restaurant where it seemed rather hot with a portable AC unit. Not ideal, but the service and food definitely made up for it. By far my favorites were the crispy salad, fried rice, and the prawns. You really cannot go wrong here with such a variety. Can't wait to go back....but this time use there out door patio area! read more
Delicious!! Been here for both dinner and brunch, both times were amazing. Each dish we had was packed with flavor! The oxtail has is a must have for brunch, the oxtail was tender and flavorful. The waffle stack is also a twist on the classic must have waffles for brunch. It's one pandan and one ube waffle with fruit and ube ice cream on top! For drinks, the guava prosecco (during brunch) was not overly sweet and was a great pair to the brunch we had! Will definitely be coming back! read more

WHEN: Thursday, 8/18/22 @ 7pm PARKING: located in downtown Pasadena so there's a lot of parking structures that are minimal cost Bone Kettle!!!! Bone kettle will forever have a special place in my heart because I went here for my 21st birthday :). They're a pan asian, slightly nicer restaurant that has a really fun vibe inside. Made reservations through Yelp and were seated right away. Workers were so nice and gave me a DELICIOUS pandan creme brulee for my bday. What we got: 1. Oxtail Dumplings ($16) - one of their most popular appetizers, loved the presentation but the dumpling was mushy and I couldn't tell where the oxtail was inside the dumpling 3/5 2. Blue Crab Toast ($24) - flavorful crab in a laksa soup, nice sized portions, the toast was a great tool to dip 4/5 3. Eggplants ($16) - not much flavor and the skin was really hard 2/5 4. Fried Cauliflower ($13) - cauliflower with kewpie mayo, yummy but nothing special 5. Rendang Carbonara ($24) - star of the show! the noodles were amazing and with the rendang it was so good... might have to start telling my dad to cook this with his traditional beef rendang 5/5 6. Nasi Goreng w/ Duck Confit ($24) - very flavorful and aromatic fried rice, duck confit was tender and delicious as well 5/5 Overall, this place has a great atmosphere and is perfect for small groups with friends. In love with this place! Excellent food and service. Reservations can be made ahead of time. There's no street parking in the main area but plenty of street parking a few blocks out. Easy access to main dining but are located in the basement and can be accessed via stairs. There's some indoor and bar seating, a few tables in front but most of it is in the heated, well lit patio. We were celebrating our anniversary and received celebration spritz which were delicious. Outside of it, we ordered the gimlet and the kiwi both delicious, very light though. The kiwi one was refreshing like a fresh squeezed juice and Gimlet had a nice tropical feel from the coconut water but none of the heaviness like coco milk. We ordered a papaya salad w/o fish eggs and shrimp on side, crab cake, and the vegan bone broth noodle soup. Everything tasted spectacular, esp the broth. Crab cake is a giant patty in sauce and comes with a good serving of bread. For the noodles, they pour hot broth right before serving but everything from noodles to veggies is seasoned and drenched in the flavorful goodness. It lives up to it's name of being a bone kettle/broth place. We also ordered a turon (jackfruit cheese fried rolls with banana pudding, that puts magnolia bakery to shame) and cassave cake w ube icecream that was devoured before we could even finish mains. Got lots of leftovers for the week that they helped us bag. They have a 20% automatic gratuity, which is something to note because we kept looking for the to sign but later realized we didn't need to. Overall a solid place (bit expensive) for a wonderful date night. read more

My besties and I got to try Bone Kettle after having it bookmarked for awhile now~ first of all, ambience is amazing :) there's both indoor seating and outdoor seating so they could easily accommodate your seating preference. I appreciated that they were able to be flexible and make changes for my reservation last minute as well. Onto the food! We ordered some of their popular items and they did not disappoint! Though it wasn't over-the-top delicious, I thought they did fusion pretty well! We ordered the Nasi Goreng (classic Indonesian fried rice), fried oxtail tips, and garlic prawns. My favorite was the garlic prawns~~I would definitely order it again, but I won't go back just for that (if that makes sense lol). My friends and I really enjoyed our time here tho~~ didn't realize we'd stay from early afternoon to late evening.. the waiter gave us a friendly reminder that it was time to go hahaha One tinyyy inconvenience is parking~~ it's difficult to find valet in the area as well as street parking but there are parking structures within walking distance. My best friend and I went to Bone Kettle to celebrate our birthdays. It was our first time eating at this restaurant. We ordered the bone broth with brisket and oxtail, the bone marrow, and the pork lumpia. They were all very delicious. The service staff were also great. They were attentive and made sure we had all we needed. The place is spotless, and it is conducive to meeting up with friends who just want to have a quiet conversation. We made a same day reservation for Monday at 7pm and were seated right away. This is an absolute favorite of ours and we come for more special occasions. Parking: Street parking, or theres a few city parking lots for $1 per 90 minutes. Drinks: Kiwi Bliss and Arum Manis (?) can't remember the name of the second drink but it had a wonderful guava flavor. both drinks were made with soju so the alcohol flavor was light. Kiwi bliss was just subtlety sweet enough to let the kiwi flavor shine. Food: Garlic Prawns, Nasi Goreng fried rice and Fatty Brisket noodles & broth. GET THE GARLIC PRAWNS PEOPLE! you cannot go wrong with these crispy, garlicy and saucy fried prawns. absolutely 10/10 and I dream about them sometimes. This was our first time getting the Nasi Goreng fried rice which was not as unique and flavorful as we had hoped. Despite this, our usual fav, the Noodles & broth is another MUST!! The broth is just out of this world and the meat, no matter what you get, is cooked to perfection. Truly one of our favorite places to visit in Pasadena and with an amazing specials menu that often rotates, you can never get bored. Sitting along a row of delicious restaurants lies the modern Pan-Asian restaurant Bone Kettle. My girl and I always frequent the adjacent restaurants, so we figured we might as well check this place out. The interior is pleasant to the eyes, sporting a modern, cozy feel with an Asian touch. Lots of clean, straight lines. Lighting was, thankfully, adequate; today's trend of dim lighting is a bleh. We reserved a time during the early dinner hours, and got seated minutes before our scheduled reservation. Our waitress introduced herself not too long after, who got our drink orders and left while we scoured through the menu. Our entire ordered consisted of the following: for drinks, lychee dragonfruit and raspberry yuzu, both of which are non-alcoholic flavored drinks; dozen oysters to start; bone broth for both of us, prime fatty brisket for me and prime top sirloin for her; Nasi Goreng with soft shell crab to supplement. The orders starting coming out not too long after we ordered. The oysters came before our drinks. One dozen oysters, all fresh and yummy. No complaints there, just good olf oysters. Our drinks came soon after. My lychee dragonfruit was refreshing but was not packed with as much flavor as anticipated. Her raspberry yuzu was very lively, tasting almost like the smell of perfume. The main course came a few minutes later. We were served a dry bowl filled with meat, vegetables, and noodles. Our waitress then poured the signature bone broth onto our bowls, like a waiter pouring sauce on a dessert. Right as they served the dry bowls to us, it dawned on me; this is literally pho. Refined, expensive pho. I didn't put two and two together until it was right in front of me. The only difference between your typical pho spot and Bone Kettle's bone broth is BK's quality and the hint of elegant complexity mixed into the broth. From then on I couldn't think of it as anything else besides pho. The nasi Goreng with soft shell crab was okay. The rice dish was lacking flavor and did not seem to deliver much except for two soft shell crabs that took the spotlight. One thing that stood out to me was the fact that they tacked on a mandatory 20% tip on the receipt. They didn't tell us beforehand, no mention of it on the menu, no option to choose how much you want to tip, no visible option to change or remove the tip. I'm sure that if you wanted it removed from the bill, you can ask the waiter to do so, but who would want to look their waiter in the eye and, with guilt trying not to build up, as for the 20% tip to be removed? This is a trend that I have been seeing in restaurants, and I do not like it. Bone Kettle's cuisine was okay, but combining a premium price point with a mandatory 20% tip on top of it all does not sit right with me. It's a good place to try once, and that's it. read more
Made reservations for a group of 10 on a Saturday night and i gotta say it was one of the best meals we have had in some time. Great spices, huge flavors and really fair prices We went nuts and the bill was about $280 a couple after tip. But we ordered almost everything t off the menu. I will say the shrimp, beef ribs and papaya salad were some of the best I've ever had They also took great care of my vegan fiancé and made her tempeh and some broth and she loved it!
