Quite the site in the middle of a desert [Wendover UT] Everytime we get a chance to stop by the salt flats we make a detour here. On our last road trip we watched the sun go down while we parked on the side of I-80 just outside of Wendover. The freeway runs in between the Great Salt Lake Desert and watching the sunset was beautiful. We returned early the next day and stopped by the salt flats before heading back home. We drove a couple of miles out... the Bonneville Salt Flats is HUGE, miles and miles of flat, open desert. The salt flats have made it to Hollywood! * Independence Day - when Will Smith dragged an unconscious alien across the desert in his parachute * Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - when Captain Jack Sparrow was lugging a giant ship across the white, barren salt * The Amazing Race * Need For Speed * The World's Fastest Indian The Bonneville is always an interesting stop. Very far drive from SLC. It was really interesting and pretty to come and look around and take pictures, but I don't think it was worth the drive there and back. I would suggest visiting only if you were driving through already. Not much to do so my guy and I didn't stay very long. We did have some fun throwing the salt around and watching someone do donuts since it was empty. The mountains in the background give it a great view as well.
Vast, unique, remote place like nowhere else! Since it's in the middle of nowhere, I'd recommend combining it with another trip (we visited on the way back to SLC from Great Basin NP, which worked out perfectly!) Driving on the speedway during dry season is very cool. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and sunglasses- it's hot and bright! Great photo ops if you account for the brightness. The EB rest area is small and disappointing, so if you're driving towards SLC, I'd highly recommend the speedway. It appears like the WB rest area is huge also, for those coming from SLC.
Loved visiting this park! We drove off-road and got to spend some time on the salt. If you plan on visiting I'd recommend to bring plenty of chapstick, water, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The salt definitely gets into the air and dries everything out a bit. Also, the white salt reflects the sun a bit too well, hence the sunscreen and glasses. This park felt surreal, I'd recommend a visit!
Hot and in the middle of nowhere. Located 1.5 hours west of Salt Lake City. Reminds me a little of the Badwater Basin in Death Valley but to a smaller extent. Nice views for about 15 minutes of your time. Is it worth the drive? Probably not, unless there are other things to do nearby or if you're just passing through.
If you know anything about Salt Lake City, you've probably seen a picture or two taken at the Bonneville Salt Flats-a 30,000 acre vast dessert of salt. It's as magnificent as the pictures look-perhaps a little more in real life. For even more amazing views, visit before the sun rises or just around sunset. The colors, the reflection, the sun-OH MY!! People come out here to take photos-rightfully so. But it's also known for driving your car as fast as possible. As others have warned, be careful of the ground. If it's wet, your car can get stuck-and it's very hard to get out. Be sure the ground is dry and firm before driving out there.
Bonneville Salt Flats is a super cool place to visit. It's in the middle of nowhere but there are captivating scenic views and it's just beautiful. My mother and I drove on the salt flats and did a couple doughnuts on the salt flat. It was so much fun and so amazing. Bonneville Salt Flats is not your typical tourist destination but if you're willing to do a bit of planning, you'll find yourself in one of the most unique and beautiful places.
A really spectacular place that inspires awe, plays tricks on your mind, & blurs the lines between sky, horizon, reality, & imagination. If approaching the flats from the east, skip the Salt Flats Rest Area (unless you need to use the facilities) & instead take exit 4. Turn right onto the North Bonnevile Speedway Road, continue past the gas station, & bear right when the road splits in about 1 mile. Continue on this long, flat road for just under 4 miles until the Bonneville Salt Flats sign. Then, the world is yours. If you maneuver your vehicle onto the flats, it only takes about a minute of speeding off in any direction until you're the only person in the world. Or on this alien planet. Or visiting whatever blip in the spacetime continuum the Salt Flats is. Just a humble suggestion: Toss on some ethereal music while you're traversing the flats. I recommend: - "Innerbloom" - RÜFÜS DU SOL - "Close - Your Eyes" by Viken Arman - "Moser" by Stavroz
Came because the other pics looked amazing. We were only in Salt Lake City 2 nights and wasted a good bit of a day driving here. For one thing its way farther than we thought .. the only thing we did that day was spiral jetty and the salt flats. We finally got there and it was closed because they were doing some racing. The only area that was open the ground wasnt that really white or neat design. It was hot and buggy and nothing like the other pics. Maybe the pretty part was the area we weren't allowed in??? either way it was hugely disappointing. We regretted coming. We did bring a drone and some of the videos looked interesting but nothing like the beautiful pics others posted. you can see from my pics the grouped looked tan vs white.
Traveling solo has it's perks- I had no real plan for my Saturday after the conference ended, so I decided to drive the hour and 45 minutes out to the Bonneville Salt Flats, close to the Utah/Nevada border. You get a preview along the interstate, but driving out to the official "park" and racing area is just spectacular. It's like nothing you have ever seen. I climber up on top of my rental to take pictures, set the timer for some fun selfies and laughed at the brave and/or dumb drivers who drove their car out onto the flats. Why? Because it had rained heavily the day before and there was a good amount of water out there- I read all the online warnings about getting stuck if there was heavy rains and water. I walked out, but I was wearing rain boots intentionally for this trek! I wish it was dry- because I would have took off and driven across it! For me- it was worth it, but I love nature and seeing all the cool things!
Visited in the winter and woke up super early to catch the sunrise. Hands down the most memorable sunrise of my life. The view is literally breathtaking. Signs are very easy to follow. Don't drive in the mud or you will get stuck!
The salt flats were well worth the drive out from SLC! Such an interesting work of nature, and very approachable - it's easy to walk out onto the flats, or drive onto certain sections if you prefer. The views are great, and walking on the flats is a really unique experience. There's no cover from the sun, however, so be warned! Definitely recommend this as a fun, quick site to see if you're looking for a unique, easy half-day activity (including the drive out and back).
It's a two (2) hour drive from Salt Lake City just a heads up. Cool place to view sunset. Amazing how you can walk all the way towards the mountain since this part of the lake is all dried up. We saw Sprinter vans and other vehicles maybe camping out? Not sure, but definitely a must see if you're ever in the area. If you need a free coffee, there's a couple of Casinos about 5 minutes away on the Nevada side which I thought was very cool. Restroom's closes in the evening but the porta potty are open 24/7, but bring hand wipes since there's no running water. Cheers!

We had a change of schedule on the iterinary so my wife suggested we should check out the salt flats. It would kill time for a couple of hours, so why not? Driving distance took me about 1 hour 30-40 mins from SLC. I used Waze GPS and it got me there accurately. There was a rest area before the Bonneville exit. The rest area had a nice scenic view of the salt flats (much whiter than the bonneville). When arriving there, you will see the Bonnevielle Salt Flats sign for a nice pictuire pose. When done, you can drive along the salt flats and take even more pictures without any distractions from other visitors. The scenic view was nature at its finest. When visiting SLC, it's a destination worth to check out once in a lifetime. read more

This is an absolutely beautiful and enchanting place to visit! It is about a little over an hour drive west of Salt Lake City. We arrived there around sunset and were blessed by the light rain from the day before that created a mirror-like reflection on the salt flats. This place is definitely a photographer's dream! read more

Definitely recommend stopping here if you're driving through! Such a cool experience! It felt like I was on another planet!! We were debating on which entrance to go to and we ended up going to the Wendover Salt Flats Rest Area - West Bound I-80. There's a bathroom and a place to park and walk on the flats or there is an entrance to drive on it. There's a huge opening so plenty of places to park and to walk around. Definitely recommend! We just stopped for a quick 5 minutes before getting back on the road! read more

This place is enchanting in ways I cannot describe. It is vast and quiet with a sense of other worldly charm. On our drive here we were not sure what to expect, but we got glimpses of what a salt flat would look like as the salts were on both sides along the way. We even saw the Morton salt company using a dump truck to transport things. It's in the right hand side and you'll see mounds of it. The closer you get to the salt flats you'll see lots of sculptures. Some of them look very Mad Max like. Keep going and you will see a bunch of cars on your right hand side parking or even on the salt flats. We made it just in time before the sunset. We rolled down our windows and smelled the salty air. The colors of the sunset were magnificently displayed with perfect gradients in contrast to the white, reflective salt. We truly loved it. It was as though we were on another planet. ** drive carefully if it has rained the night or day before as the salt can become slippery. Also make sure to bring some water or go to the rinse station to wash off your dog's paws. Lastly, rinse off your car immediately to avoid corrosion*** read more

IT WAS FLOODED OVER :') This Pinterest-worthy spot has been on my pins for years, so when I realized that it could be a part of my family's UT-NV-CO road trip, I leaped at the chance to write it in the itinerary. It's at the UT-NV northwest border, and when I went (mid April 2023), it was flooded over. But I was still able to get pretty pictures lol Note that the road to get to the salt flats can get a lil' bumpy and there are no restrooms on site. read more
So glad we could see this. If you google how many salt flats in the world it said 5 and we are very fortunate to have 2 in US. Bonneville is one of them and Devil's golf course in Death Valley national park is the other. It's amazing to see (and you can even drive on the salt flats) such a nature that are so densely packed of salt. You have to be there to feel the experience the pictures won't do it's justice. It's a good 2 hours drive from Salt Lake City but completely worth the trip. Strongly recommended to everyone. read more
I've had the Bonneville Salt Flats on my bucket list for a while and was fortunate to finally check it out. It is about an hour and a half west of Salt Lake City and is located at a rest stop close to the Utah/Nevada border. There's a sign that talks about the speed way and how the fastest speeds by automobile were recorded here, up to 600+ miles an hour. I drove on the flats and was able to drive a little crazier and faster than I normally would in the open space which was really fun, and I recommend you drive on it as well. The further you drive in the more pronounced the salt flats are so they make for great pictures. When you are walking or driving around it's just so wide open everywhere you look and there's so much space all around which is really cool. Unfortunately it was a little cloudy and smoky when I visited so I wasn't able to see the contrast of the blue sky and the white ground but it was still a nice visit. I even saw some people scooping up the salt from the ground and putting it in plastic bags, so if you're looking for a souvenir that's a thing too. read more
Feels like your in another planet a.k.a Star Wars land haha! Free for everyone and it's a rest area that has a bathroom which is really good! You can drive your car on the salt flats and there's no speed limit (; They also have where you can wash your shoes to get all the salt out. read more
My friends and I came here at the end of October. We tried beating the sunrise by 6am, we left Salt Lake City at 4am. The drive takes little less than 2 hours. Unfortunately it was really windy, cloudy, and cold. Also it started raining lightly at 8am. It was so cold we didn't stay to long. We ended up warming up in the car for a couple minutes then went outside when it was more lit but still cold. I think it was a really cool and fun experience. Worth checking out. We didn't go to the location where the state park is. We pulled over at a rest area that is off I-80. I was reading the other location didn't have a bathroom. Also looks like at this location there is a place where you can drive your car on to the flats from the parking lot. read more

This is one of the coolest places I've seen. We were only in Salt Lake City for a day and we went out of our way to make sure we stopped here. Our first stop was at the International Speedway at exit 4. This wasn't very exciting. Yes, there is salt, but it was dirty and disheveled from cars driving on it. The best place to view them is the westbound rest area. This is easy to get to if you're coming from Salt Lake City. If you're coming the other way, it would add a significant amount of time since the next exit to turn around at is far away (or you can park at the eastbound rest area and take your chances crossing the highway). The westbound rest area has gorgeous views of the salt flats with the amazing hexagonal structure. This is the only place you need to stop! If you're anywhere near here, make sure to stop by. It's not a long stop, but it's definitely worth it. read more

If you're passing by Salt Lake City, you should check this place out for some pretty photo opps. It's about 1.5 hrs from SLC. You'll need lots of sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses because the salt is bright and it's a massive field of salt. read more
Note to self: Check the weather reports from the previous few days before driving out here. Wet or dry its still a neat experience that most people don't get to have. I didn't get to try my car out on it like I planned, but I did take it off the paved road into the slushy salt a few feet.... just to say I drove on it. (Several car washes should do the trick later). The ankle and knee high water covering the salt flats was still pretty and amazing to stare across. read more
The weekend of Sept. 25-27 was supposed to be Bonneville Salt Flats kickoff of "Speed Week" of land speed races. Due to covid-19 though, they were cancelled. However, as a bonus for us that just so happened to be the weekend we were planning on coming out. Also, we happened to find out it's a Utah State Park and it's free! The land is so vast that cars, motorcycles, RV's, people can pretty much travel as afar as the eye can see, plop yourself down and hang out. Only one caveat, BE CAREFUL!!! Some people are out doing donuts, trying to break land speed records (or their cars) while driving, flying drones, pretty much anything they can think of. There are a couple of orange cones In random places and a vaguely delineated "track" because of all the tire marks but other than that, drive to your hearts content. Oh, one more caveat, if for se reason you do decide to drive out to the middle of nowhere on the salt flat and get caught out there after the sun sets, make sure you have REALLY GOOD LIGHTING. It's pretty sketchy trying to find the exit while other cars are out there as well. Otherwise it's a epic time! read more
This is a cool place to stop if you are on your way through. It's a shame the way the roads are set up though as you may or may not have to illegally make a U-turn in the lane that crosses the middle of the freeway that is for "authorized vehicles only". We stayed for about 90 minutes and most people came and went in that amount of time, so you don't have to allot a ton of time to enjoy this. Its a cool flat surface but it is incredibly windy. We tried flying our drone but had some issues. Most people didn't walk out too far and those who drove out weren't on the flats long either. For a free activity it is definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. read more

A much closer salt flat than going to Bolivia! I'll admit, though not as nice, but it delivers! Visited Utah a few years ago and definitely wanted to stop by this place, I was inspired by many photos to do an illusional photo of my own...but failed miserably. I believe there are a few entrances and few different ways to get here as I saw people entering from all corners of the streets. There is not much to see, but a lot to see here. It's such a simple, yet breathtaking piece of land. The bold and protruding cracks and splits on the sand was so cool to look at, it drew a pattern like I've never seen before and it was very captivating. I took many photos here and there was not one that did not come out great! (other than my illusion photo) Put this on your bucket list! read more
When visiting Salt Lake City, the salt flats are on peoples lists to visit! Located off of I-80 is this long road where people drive around 80mph and not many exits are stops. It took us a little over an hour from downtown Salt Lake City to get here, we wanted to go Sunrise at the end of October so we checked when it would be and got there around 6am. It was pretty dark and lightened up but it was super cold and windy. The drive was pretty windy as well. We didn't go to the exact stop but we stopped at one of the rest areas to get out. Some people brought their cars in but we didn't, I read online the salt can damage the cars and we had rental cars. The bathrooms were open but we ran out to take pics then took a rest to warm up in the car because it was so windy. It definitely is a beautiful site if you're driving through, would recommend stopping for some cool pics! read more
It's unique to the state! We drove out around 3am to catch the sunrise because we love to check out places that are unique with a time where it's less packed. It was well worth the drive 2 hr. You can park on the salt flats but at your own risk. There are bathrooms around. Fill up your gas tank as there isn't one super close by! read more
It's 120 miles from salt lake city but what else are you really going to do?? Get out here!!! The drive is pretty easy and decently scenic. This would be a perfect spot for any wedding or engagement photos. Luckily because it's so far it's not that busy giving you ample space to yourself. Absolutely a must do if you're out of state visiting. read more
Definitely make the stop! Go to the rest area off I80 and also do the extra drive to the other side of the reflection to see more of the salt itself. The scene is very pretty and interesting from both side, and you'll get great pics. This short visit was one of our favorites during our recent cross-country drive. It was easy, pretty, and not too time consuming. read more
