Cute little book store which seems to be a small downtown version off shoot of the original store. Lots of sci-fi and fantasy books, not as big of a selection as the og store, but still good. Good prices, especially on kids books and trade paperbacks. read more

Conveniently located near the ocean, this is a place for book lovers looking to spend time near the ocean. While they do shopping or eating out in Niantic, this is a cool place that they can check out if they have a chance to stop by because they have a lot of cool books for children as well as nonfiction books and movies to browse. read more

This is the Downtown Book Barn, one of the four locations in the Book Barn line-up. This is a jam packed store right on Main Street in the heart of lovely downtown Niantic. It really is a book lovers dream come true - you can browse around here for hours. I wanted to look at audiobooks, and this is the only BB location that sells them. I picked up a $4 audiobook about Ron Guidry and Yogi Berra hanging out together in Spring training. I have to say a word about the super nice and very funny guy working here today. He was a hoot and made the BB experience even better! read more

I can't find a thing in this place. Is it organized by author? Or Title? Who knows. Seems like a store for people who like to rummage through random books. Wish there was more organization. Unfortunately, since I couldn't find anything, I decided to ask the gentleman at the register. He proceeded to give me a heaping pile of attitude. He made me feel like an idiot for not knowing his magical book finding system. I love these types of stores but I will never return to this one. I'll give my business that I would have gave them, to Amazon instead. read more

I went to this store and was looking around the store. I am a 50 year old male not a child. I noticed some really cool small statues in the front window. I saw no signs that indicated that I was not allowed to touch them so I picked one up showed my wife because I thought she would think it was cute. The large male that was running the store told me immediately to put it down and it was not for sale in an extraordinarily rude manner. He then told me that if I wanted to buy something like that, I should go to the Christmas tree shops because the bookstore was not a novelty store that sold figurines or trinkets. They were a bookstore. These were his words. I was a bit taken aback by this type of behavior by an employee of a business. I then noticed there were some coffee cups just below the trinkets. I then asked him if the coffee cups are for sale he said yes they were. So then I asked him are you a coffee shop or a bookstore he then told me to get out of the store I guess he didn't like the way I questioned his thought process. This individual was extraordinarily rude the stores is extraordinarily disorganized, I will never go back there again. read more

First of all, the address of this location is listed as East Lyme. We used the gps and it led us to the wrong place, on account of the wrong location registered for this business! We had a rather difficult time finding this store. Secondly, I was browsing for books on Tibetan Buddhism and there is not much of a selection aside from the 15 books of the same title. This seems to be more the store to look for Books on Christianity. Also, they had very little on books by Stephen Hawking. So, much as I loved the concept, I found very little at all to interest me. And the stereo/sound system kept giving trouble? One moment it was too loud, the next it could barely be heard, the sound kept phasing in and out which was very distracting and annoying while one was trying to browse the titles of the books. read more

An amazing place to go if you love books! My friend posted a picture via Instagram showing a sign of "dolla books" so I decided to check out the page before going, since it is almost an hour away from me. The website was very detailed showing all about the store(s) they have, and what the main objective of the main store is. The main store is probably one of the most hidden finds I have ever found and I absolutely love it. I was so overwhelmed with how many books there were and how much time I could actually spend rummaging through each building. I definitely got lost s few times in my own little world, but I was just going to check it out, and then I would return. I was wrong, I spent 2 hours there and it felt like about 2 minutes. The setup is very organized where each building/cart has its own meaning, ranging from new arrivals to romance novels to fiction to a whole building of non fiction. Outside of all the books, they have gardens everywhere, a huge playground for kids, games around and about like basketball, chess, and some stone game, and most importantly to me, goats. Two feeding machines for a quarter each, the goats will love you so much! Without any hesitation I will be returning, the staff was so nice because it was my first time, they were able to help, and even offered to call the other stores for a book request I had. Despite the drive, this is definitely a new hidden treasure I have found and I will be returning to get lost in the book world. read more

Used to love coming here, but the past two times, there's been really questionable oversexualized music playing in the shop. This is the location for all the kids books. Not exactly what you want your kids hearing as they're looking for new reads. read more

This was our last stop of our Book Barn Marathon (Please read my reviews of the other three locations). This is the location with paperbacks and children's books. If you couldn't find a specific fiction title at one of the other locations, it might be here. One of the books my friend was looking for, but couldn't find at one of the other stores, was sitting right in plain sight on a shelf (after we figured out how they were sorted), and she said it made the trip worthwhile. Ah, simple pleasures. As for me, I just wandered among the miles (it seemed like) of shelving, just taking in the old book smell. I found the children's section - a HUGE room with books for kids. If your child is a reader, this is the place to take them. There were several small kids (with their mothers) having a ball pulling books off shelves, opening them, and mouthing the words as they read. If your children like to read, this is the perfect place to take them. My friend and I spent the least amount of time in this store. We noticed it was starting to rain, and we foolishly had left the car (and the umbrella) parked by the Midtown store. She paid for her book, and rushed out. We'll come back here on a clear day. read more

This branch of the Book Barn is a little weak. The store is very small, dirty, and cluttered. Not much variety of paperbacks. I would not shop here while there is the bigger and better Book Barn two miles up the road. read more

I came out to the Book Barn Niantic to look through the business and economics books. First went to the main location, but was told the business and economics section had been moved here. Too bad, because the barn location certainly looked interesting. Well, in a nutshell, this downtown location isn't very good. The business and econ selection was pretty lousy - mostly tradebook best sellers from the past 20 years or so, often very topical. There were no interesting finds or timeless classics (of the category) or anything of that sort. Just a terrible waste of time for me. Secondly, the store is a dump. It smells awful (thank you, cats), is cluttered and messy, and there's few places to sit (not that you really want to sit down). It's really just an uninviting mess. read more

I can not praise the gentleman who works here enough. My ride was late picking me up tonight. Not only did he wait with me past closing, but when it became apparent that she was going to be much later he carried my mammoth box of books across the street to Dunkin Doughnuts for me. He was impossibly kind. (If you read this, thank you so much.) Even two hours of browsing only let me scratch the surface of this store. The shelves bulge with the choicest reads, and the prices are outrageously reasonable. Where else can I find a music textbook valued at $40 for $4?! Coming here every time we're in CT is the highlight of our trip. read more

This place is an amazing land of books and cats. I constantly go here to find great deals on books. They also have an annual sale where you can get 30% off all your items! Most books are usually $1-4, so this is a great place if you are on a budget. The cats are friendly. I spot them napping amongst the books all the time. This place is perfect for anyone that loves cats and books. read more

This is just one of their locations in Niantic. They have an amazing selection of sci fi/fantasy books here, mostly paperback so a buck a piece. Just this summer I got the better part of the entire foundation series and just devoured them. I also frequent this book barn for the music section, which holds a lot of great reads as well. They offer cook books, used DVDs. Comic books, a section for religion, and probably more but I can't think of the other sections they specialize. You have to go check out every store! read more

The man at the Downtown location was busy in a conversation and didn't seem as though he was interested in helping me find the books I specifically came to that location to see. I went to the other location (#3 I think) that had a marvelous garden, fantastic staff and was a dream. My complaint is that there is not a location closer. All of the Book Barn locations are jam packed with used books at reasonable prices, and staffed by knowledgeable workers, and this one is no exception, though it's not quite as awesome as the main, original Book Barn. read more

I am HUGE Sci-Fi & Fantasy fan. The selection was excellent and very well organized. I even ran across two books I had been looking for prices at only $1! I did like the Math & Science selection also (I am a Physics Teacher by trade) though the organization was a bit scattered. I still haven't gotten to the MIdtown location but I hope it is just as good. read more

Heaven on earth. Discovered this gem via Atlas Obscura. So many used bookstores have jacked up prices, but everything in this store was reasonable. Lovely staff. Lovely animals. Amazing property. I was here in December and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Can't wait to make my way back up there. read more

We shop here all the time including at 8:45PM on Sunday as they are open everyday until 9PM. The staff is great and will help you find a book. The cookbook section is amazing with plenty of top full color books for about $4. Each of the three locations carries different subjects. read more

This is a review for the downtown location of Book Barn. It is AMAZING if you like horror and sci fi stuff. There are not any horror or sci fi books at book barn"s main campus so if that is what you are looking for go to the downtown location first. All pocket books are 1 dollar. Amazing prices, amazing selection, great place to look around if you love fantasy, sci fi, horror. If you are looking for normal fiction, i suggest going to the main campus which is just down the street. read more

Went here after I could not find my favorite author at the other Book Barn location. This Book Barn was not as amazing as the other one in the sense that this one is indoors and is much more like a traditional book store, but it is no less amazing. The store had very knowledgeable and hands-on staff members and the selection of horror and sci-fi was very impressive. read more
