The ruins themselves are not much to look at, but enough information is provided to explain the history of the site to answer many questions that a visitor may have. Overall, even though it is a bit out of the way, I would recommend a stop at this historic site if you have time.

This structure dates to 1875 and is a private residence for some time. The white tower is 39 feet tall and has a range of 9 nautical miles. It marks the mouth of the Sheepscot River and access to the town of Wiscasset. The lighthouse is entirely on private property that is not open to the public. Clear "no trespassing signs" at the entrance to the driveway warn you not to continue exploring. There is a small parking area at a nearby beach and you can get some decent pictures from there. You can't actually get near Hendrick's Head (as it's on private property) so your options to see it…read moreare: 1) By boat 2) From the small (and nearly non-existent at high tide) nearby beach in West Southport that overlooks Hendricks Harbor; the beach is *very* rocky at some spots (so wear your water shoes), but the waters here are such a lovely shade of teal and, dare I say, even a bit warmer for Atlantic temps! Nice, uncrowded spot to swim at if you know about it! There's plenty of parking on Beach Rd/Lighthouse Ln; when we came it was literally all out of staters, it seemed like they were all staying nearby too. The lighthouse - a tapered, square-shaped wood frame structure with a red light and a red roof on the keeper's house - was built in 1829 to guide ships on the Sheepscot River making their way to the shipbuilding center at Wiscasset Harbor; it was rebuilt in 1875, deactivated in 1933, then relit in 1951. Apparently there's a lot of stories/lore around this particular lighthouse (like one about a child being saved by a lighthouse keeper after some traumatic shipwreck), so it's definitely got some fascinating history!

It received an update to the mechanical portions in 1988 and then construction repairs with a repainting in 2024. It is the last thru truss swing bridge in Maine. The swing span measures 178 feet long by 22 feet curb-to-curb and there are two additional fixed approach spans that are 100 feet and 86 feet long. We were here in the afternoon during off season on the way to the Hendricks Head Lighthouse, so we did not have the opportunity to see the opening of the bridge. I would imagine that's quite the sight. The bridge is quite narrow with only one lane in each direction and a narrow raised pedestrian lane that does not have a barrier. The deck is deeply grooved so motorcycles and bicycles would need to take special care when crossing. [Review 14895 overall, 397 of 2021, number 77 in Maine.]

**November 2025: Friday Morning Visit**…read more I saw that the Victoria Mansion was just a 10 minute walk from our airbnb and that Black Friday was the start of their Christmas overlay! It sounded fun and for $19.25 (Adult Admission) I was excited to see how they would implement the Nutcracker theme to the home. Guests enter through the gift shop and while we arrived at 10:10am or so I was really surprised at how many visitors they had checking out the home. As a National Historic Landmark, this summer home was created by Ruggles Morses, sometime between 1858-1860, and as a hotel entrepreneur Morses implemented many of the lavish hotel designs to it. The home itself is original and over 90% of the interiors and furnishings remain original to 1860, including furniture, carpets, draperies, textiles, which was really impressive. I think I spent about 45 minutes admiring all the home details and reading the placards, and there were friendly informative docents at pretty much each section of the home These photos don't even really do it justice, but the decorations were extremely elaborate and each room focused on a different act in the ballet - ie. Spanish Chocolates, Mother Ginger, Arabian Coffee, Chinese Tea, etc. There was significant care given to each room. Overall, I had fun time!

Our guide was actually doing a very good job narrating, that is until she seemed annoyed that we wanted to pose for one or two pictures, hurrying us along and stating we were waisting time. Even the grand staircase, not allowing us to stand in the middle of the steps for a photograph. Telling us that wasn't allowed, it all sounded ridiculous. I mean it was just two people the guide was touring, us! The guide even walked us past the tip box we weren't tossing in anything. We were staying nearby in the area, so it was an easy drive here. This park is small, but has such a rich history. The guys working at the park were super friendly, and one gave us some fun facts about the lighthouse before heading up to the top! Speaking of, going up to the top is really neat. It's a tad bit scary and has a steep, spiral staircase, but has some great views once you get up there. There's also a little room with more on the history. Outside, you can climb around on the rocks to have a great viewing spot of the ocean. You need to come visit this place if you are nearby!

We love swinging bridges so we made sure to make a stop at this one. It happened to be raining when…read morewe were on our way through this area but we didn't let that stop us. If anything, the fact that it was dusk and the rain was so gentle, kind of made the whole experience feel more visceral and intimate. The bridge itself is really beautiful with great views of the river on both sides. There's definitely enough movement so that you don't forget you're on a swinging bridge, but it didn't feel unsafe and even our little dog was fine walking back and forth across it. My husband and I hung out in the middle for a while, enjoying the views, cuddled in the cool wet air. It was actually pretty romantic. We probably spent about 15 or 20 minutes here and in that time multiple people crossed the bridge and at least five or six stopped to take photos in front of it, including a group of 4 that asked us to take their photo for them (pictured below) so this is a busy area even in the rain. But once you're here, you know why because it's a pretty cool experience. I definitely recommend a quick stop here if you can make the time.

We had a naturalist/animal guide who was knowledgeable and very attentive at identifying birds. There were a decent number of puffins, though they didn't really get close enough to make out the finer details by naked eye, but there are binoculars for rent (not sure how helpful they are because I had my own camera). We unfortunately didn't see any whales, but we were each given a standby ticket for a future cruise. The instructions in the email confirmation weren't completely accurate -- it instructed to go to a different pier where the cruise was actually going to be. Thankfully, I was able to reach staff over the phone and clarify this quickly. Definitely dress in layers, because once the boat starts powering out of the bay, the wind chills the temperature down a good 20 degrees. They did have blankets available but I'm not sure if they're an additional cost. The inside of the boat is nice and toasty, but the views aren't as crisp. I'd heard parking was rough, but if you go before June 1, I noticed some lots nearby were free, and there is free 4 hour parking a short 6 minute walk away that is just long enough for the cruise.
