The queues are quickly serviced so you don't have to wait long. The butchers were friendly enough and the price was very good I go there whenever I want a good BBQ selection. The best cuts are always available so if you want it just ask, they'll come back with a great steak. I had 8 1/4 pounders and 12 sausages for just over £5 that's great value for money.

We'd maybe stop into a cafe for egg and chips and my nan would, of course, know the owner. We'd go to a couple of pound shops. Not to look about, mind you. But because my nan wanted very specific things from there. And then, before heading to the bus stop, we'd go to the butchers "to pick up something for our tea". That was the routine. And now that I'm an adult myself, I can't help but smile whenever I dive in to grab a steak "for my tea". Of course, that smile also comes from the fact that in this particular butcher, it's not uncommon to see the meat cut right in front of you if you go at the right time of the day. There's something visceral and satisfying about watching your food being sliced up right in front of you. It's like being primal by proxy. And the prices on top of this... they're just the greatest thing ever. Buying a steak big enough to beat a man to death with for pocket change gives an immense amount of satisfaction. And then heading back to the cave with a hunk of meat over your shoulder? You feel like a hunter. What's not to love?

If you get there early enough you can pick up some organic bread too but that goes pretty quickly. The staff are really friendly and will always check to see if they've got stock in the back you might want. For me the only frustration really is it looks and feels the same as it has done for many years now. It feels as if it hasn't really developed in the same way Pulse has over the other side of town. Often the shelves are empty and it has a faint air of muddle and neglect. The couple who run it are lovely but don't seem to be interested in developing it. It feels like it's stuck in a bit of a time-warp. To be honest I would visit more often if this aspect improved.

I had a look around some of the little shops and then the Sainsbury's but then I found Beanfreaks. I did at first think it would be like other health food shops - over priced and a lousy range but this was a surprise. Gluten free products are actually on three different shelves so its worth looking around. There are all sorts of healthy goods here but the gf range is the best I've ever seen. Organ, energie, dietary specials, trufree and tons more, with baking supplies, noodles, pastas, and sweet treats all available. Some times there are deals on - I had to go shopping for some treats to bring back to Edinburgh and would have bought more had it not been for the space restrictions in my luggage. Great little find - wish we had one in Edinburgh but I did check and can order online :)

The store is a community shop that meets the needs of the roath residents being quite a small store means a lot is jammed into the isles. Well, first off, I think they have a fantastic range of continental foods and more exotic ingredients on offer that isn't really matched by other shops around here. Also, this place doesn't feel like it's exclusively aimed at a particular target market - it may sell Halal meat but it attracts all sorts of different customers, and you never feel uncomfortable looking around. And, finally, it's got a charming atmosphere about it, making you want to spend time browsing around - whereas in most supermarkets I am dashing about and can't wait to get out.

On the whole I was quite satisfied and impressed. The store is not as big as the original, nor does it have as much stock. This is for the better though, as it is ascetically pleasing, and I have often felt that the other store packs far too much in. A further difference is that this new store focuses far more on the sweeter things in life. There is a mouthwatering selection of handmade chocolates, a wide variety of old fashioned sweets, and some simply breathtaking gingerbread houses, which are already on my Christmas list for next year. They do sell some of the more savory products (though if that's what your after I'd head for their other store), including a rather nice selection of oils, which are far superior to anything you get in a supermarket. Finally the great thing about this store, is that it really makes a nice change from all the big brand names that dominate St David's 2. It's so nice to see an independent retailer doing so well, and I would truly encourage anyone to check out Wallys.

As someone who is desperately trying to convert to a healthy diet, Whitchurch Health Foods makes the process far less daunting. The shop is full of yummy yet healthy treats (I still can't quite believe that healthy choc ices actually exist). Whilst the focus is unquestionably on food, it must be mentioned that they have a selection of toiletries made from natural sources (the Aloe Vera lip balm, is a personal fave of mine). The staff can appear slightly quiet, however the lady serving me recently, went out of her way to tell me that they had a very similar product to the one I was buying, on sale at a reduced price (very kind).
