Supermarket shopping can be so tedious that I want to stick pencils up my nostrils and call myself Bob after an hour of it. Therefore, imagine my delight at finding a supermarket experience that is actually pleasant. More than pleasant in fact. Give yourselves a round of applause Booths. What a great place to shop. It's a Northern small chain and it's all about tradition and quality products. First up, it's in Ilkley which is always a nice drive to and a lush town to have a gentle stroll around. So the location is a winner even if it's not the most practical place to go on a daily basis for me. The real selling point is the products though. We're talking excellent quality and fresh as the day is young. The vegetables are always tasty and fresh and I'm always excited to see artichokes on sale. I know I need to get out more. The deli counter is simply divine and I'm always partial to some marinated garlic whilst trying to avoid the stand out cakes in the bakery section. They've also got a great mix of bottled lagers and ciders from around the world and the wines are top quality too. It retains that shop local feel tom it without cutting back on the actual quality. Booths supermarket is perfectly designed for the clientele of Ilkley namely older people and families. It is a large supermarket with toilets and tearooms situated just on the edge of the town centre with its own car park right outside. Before I went round to do a quick shop I visited the toilets and there was a delightful bunch of flowers by the sinks. Outside there is a selection of flowers in pots and hanging baskets and they sell a range of composts and other garden related things, including the odd garden bench! There is a large range of fruit and vegetables, a deli for meats and cheese and a bakery. I really like the fact that they sell Village Bakery products - a bakery in the Lake District that makes organic homemade bread, cake and biscuits. Normally I come across this kind of thing in health food shops. There were plenty of old biddies conversing about the state of the weather so moving around the shop was a bit slow but otherwise they have a nice selection of things that are only a tiny bit more expensive than other middle class super markets. Booths in Ilkley is a good supermarket, in a nice location. There is ample parking, and the building is pleasant on the eye. There is a great variety of produce on offer, with an emphasis on excellent locally-sourced goods, alongside familiar brand-name items. The staff are friendly, helpful and willing to answer questions or give advice about products. Booths is miles ahead of the larger supermarket chains in terms of the quality of it's goods, the use of unnecessary packaging, and it's customer servicing. read more

I love Booths, but for some reason it took me years to realise that there was one just down the road in Ilkley. Oh happy, happy day. Like a supermarket but better, Booths stocks top quality local and national produce with a cheese aisle and alcohol section to die for. They partner up with local producers rather than ship everything in from halfway across the world, and as a result while the produce isn't always the cheapest it is invariably the best. Check out the wood-fired bread from Kendal, Booths own brand Garstang blue cheese from Lancashire or one of the huge range of locally brewed beers and ciders. Like a cross between Marks and Spencers and a farmer's market, Booths is ideal for those who want to shop locally but don't have the time to visit the market. read more

Yummy, yum, yum, yum...if you are a bit of foodie yet also enjoy getting merry on the weekends and tend to miss the farmers market because bed and warmth is far more appealing then you may want to make a trip out to 'Booths' in Ilkley. Purveyors of quality products you can find locally sourced goods as well as normal supermarket products (cadbury's, stella, nestle, and so on). Two of my more favored things; cheese and cider, a grand selection of both is available for you to "hum and ah" over for a while and at the moment there's an offer on beer too. Who would have thought something so up-market had it's origins in Blackpool, no offence but have you seen what the streets are littered with there on a weekend? I'd never been, nor heard of Booths when I was summond to drive a very excited crowd to Ilkley, I felt like it was a crusade to save our house from average-standard-supermarket-bought roasts. One of my friends is passionate about this place, and I think some of her enthusiasm has rubbed off on me. It's light setting inside, is reminiscent of a supermarket chain, and I suppose that exactly what it is really, with a few of them dotted around the country, but I begrudgingly admitt that. What seperates it from the Sainsbury's and Tesco's of this world is its almost unfallable focus on local and national produce, rather than importing goods, focussing predominantly on a brand or a knock of price, and ignoring true quality that hasn't taken weeks to get here. With fresh top quality fresh products, Booths reminds more of a farmers market than of a supermarket (appearances aside), a kinder (though more expensive) alternative when you fancy sampling a bit of the culinary good life.
