The location was small but provided a cozy and intimate environment, perfect for a date night or a fun dinner with friends. I've been to Boqueria several times, and it never disappoints. It's always a lively, fun experience, especially during happy hour. They have a great selection of drinks and small bites, and I highly recommend starting with the red sangria. Fair warning: it goes down a little too easily. The jamón croquetas and mushroom croquetas are perfect bar snacks to pair with your sangria. We happened to be there watching Spain during the World Cup, so between the food, drinks, and cheering fans, it almost felt like we had been transported to Barcelona--minus the airfare. The service was friendly, relaxed, and refreshingly unhurried. We never felt rushed and were able to order at our own pace, which made the meal even more enjoyable. For the main course, the meatballs, chicken skewers, gambas al ajillo, and beef paella were all delicious. Honestly, every time a dish arrived, I thought, "Okay, this is my favorite," until the next one came out. The churros were the perfect ending--crispy, hot, and dangerously good when dipped into the thick, rich hot chocolate. They're the kind of dessert that makes you seriously consider ordering a second round... even when you're already full. Three of us came here on Mother's Day for dinner with a reservation. We were greeted and seated promptly. First, the restaurant is very attractive on the inside. It's a small area with the tables pretty close together. We were given a table in the far corner, which was perfect for comfort and looking out at the restaurant. Two of us each ordered a glass of house wine, which were "ok." We opted for the Boqueria Experience, which is $65 per person and includes a variety of chef-selected tapas, a paella and an order of the restaurant's special JAMÓN IBÉRICO DE BELLOTA, which is described on the charcuterie menu as aged 48 months, with deep marbling, rich and nutty flavor. We enjoyed most of the tapas, including the potatoes, the beef/lamb balls, the salad and bruschetta. The croquettes were "ok" with the heavy aeoli masking some of the flavor. The seafood paella was good and was different from ones I've had in the past, with the caramelized layer on the bottom. Yum. Honestly, none of us was a big fan of the Jamon Iberico de Bellota. I'm sure it's special and luxurious, but we found it not to have much flavor. Frankly, it was a big disappointment for us. The service was beyond excellent. We did the brunch feast and unlimited drinks for a party of 6, and they absolutely followed through. Our server was fun, personable, and quick, which is what makes a brunch experience that much better. The feast is a good deal for the amount of food you get because they're portioning to the table. We actually got three appetizers due to a mix-up in the kitchen and those were the bacon-wrapped dates, patatas bravas, and mushroom croquetas. All tasted good, but the patatas bravas were definitely the best. For the mains, we ordered the huevos horneados, huevos estrellados, and torrija. I went with two friends and we did the $65 chef's selection of tapas -- honestly, everything was super flavorful and a really solid mix. Plates were coming out back-to-back-to-back, which was great at first, but by the end it started to feel like a lot of food. Only real hiccup: after all the small plates came out, we were still waiting on a full-sized paella. It took about 15 minutes after we'd already finished everything else, which kinda killed the momentum. When it finally came, the seafood itself was well-seasoned, but the rice was pretty bland and slightly burnt on the bottom. Last call for happy hour is around 5:50pm, and I appreciate that our waiter didn't try to avoid us when last call came around. The restaurant itself is very cute, but it was hard to have a conversation because of the noise level. I'm glad I made a reservation because it was packed with a mixture of large groups and couples. The place was empty. We ordered 5 different tapas: Jamon Serrano, Boquerones con Naranja, Patatas Bravas, Gambas al Ajillo and the Pulpo a la Plancha. The Jamon Serrano ($14) consisted of 5 thin and small pieces of jamon. It was good, but a bit overpriced for what we got. The Boquerones con Naranja ($13) was too sour for my tasting. The Patatas Bravas ($13) was one of the most reviewed items in their menu on Yelp and highly recommended, but I thought it was average. I have been to Spain and those Patatas Bravas cannot compare to what I had in Spain. The Gambas al Ajillo ($19) was another highly recommended item I saw as I was reading the reviews of this restaurant. That dish did not disappoint. The sauce was so good I wish they gave us more bread to dip it in the sauce. the Pulpo a la Plancha ($21) was overcooked, very hard, rubbery and with burnt ends. As for the entree, we opted for the medium Seafood Paella ($49). The paella takes about 30-45mins to be made, so if this is the only thing you want to try, be ready to wait. But let me tell you, it is not worth the wait. At first it looks really yummy, but it was extremely oily and overcooked to the point that some of the seafood and the rice tasted bitter. I guess we still had hopes on Boqueria because we also got dessert. The worst churros of my life. Thin, short and undercooked. The batter tasted and felt raw. Since we were having a good time, we did not complain in person despite the horrible food, but I wish I did. Service wise, we waited a long time for the tapas because there was an issue with their system, but weren't informed until a lot later.
