Foolishly, several months prior to my wife's…read moreand my departure I booked the Meridiana Country Hotel, not based upon the distance between where we planned on touring, but rather based solely upon glowing reviews. I am a review obsessed person by nature, and rarely eat at any restaurant, go to any attraction, or stay at any hotel without doing extensive research about the reviews beforehand. Back to our conundrum, since I vetted the reviews, but not the location I quickly realized my mistake of booking a hotel so far away once we arrived at the train station in Florence. There were assistants at the train station, who I assume were lifelong Florencians, and they hadn't the slightest clue how best to travel to the hotel's location. We ended up taking a train to the Il Neto station and then became stuck with no bus to take us the rest of the way. We were hopeless and might as well have been in the middle of wilderness since we were no longer tourists in places catering to them in leaps and bounds, but instead strangers in a very foreign land. I called the hotel for advice and the front desk agent advised us to call a taxi, however with the time of night and the distance between us and Florence I thought that there were minute chances of a taxi showing up. Enter Lawrence: we were walking blindly down the street in the dark in Il Neto hoping to come across a store where we could ask for advice, and lo and behold someone gets out of a black SUV and asks us if we are going to the Merdiana Country Hotel. The look on my face turned almost immediately from sheer shock to absolute joy, we were saved! The consummate gentleman Lawrence drove over an hour round-trip to get us. He refused my gas money and only wished us a pleasant stay with him, and pleasant stay we had indeed. Service excellence is Loris' most important competitive advantage and is his distinguishing edge. His ethos is built on the Golden Rule, of treating others as you would like to be treated. With this simple yet powerful credo, Lawrence was been able to turn moments of desperation, such as ours, into a memorable and happy stay. Not to mention a resort stay with beautifully appointed rooms and one of the best breakfasts offered by a hotel during my stay in Italy. The Dinners were scrumptious and perfectly prepared and no one passed up on dessert. A true indulgence in every sense. Also it's very close to the Circuit de Mugello which was the reason we initially booked here. What a great place to relax after a day at the track!

my rating is PURELY on customer service. my friends and I had a terrible and very unsafe situation…read morehappen and we needed somewhere safe to use WiFi and figure out what to do next. the front desk man, who spoke little English, did the absolute MOST to help us out. researched train schedules, offered the WiFi password, and even let us sit in the waiting room to calm down and figure out our next plan of action. we even heard him learning a few phrases in English to help better assist us. this man genuinely saved me and my friends lives that night for who knows what would've happened if he had turned us away. amazing service. If we had needed a place to stay for overnight, I would've picked this place in a heartbeat because of this fantastic gentleman.

The place is unique you would find few hotels that authentic anywhere in the world! Of course if you like only recent hotels with all the modern comfort this might not be the place you would look for, the furniture are quite old, there is no elevator so you have to go up a very steep stair etc... but if you like old places this is for you! Breakfast is included and is pretty good (continental buffet with italian cornetti and espresso) Only issue is that if you're actually touring Florence this hotel is pretty far away (25min by car). Not a problem for us a this was our last night before getting on the road the morning after.

The hotel was centrally located, and it's one of the more modern, elegant hotels we've stayed at during our trip. The Duomo and Piazza Santa Maria Novella were steps away from the hotel, and it's a less than 10 minute taxi to the train station. Their complimentary breakfast was amazing. They offered a huge variety of items including hot food, tortes, cereals, fruit, cheeses, parfaits, quiches, etc. I enjoyed a latte every morning with them. Our room at Hotel Spadai was excellent. Very spacious with tall ceilings and had plenty of room for us to lay out 2 large pieces of luggage and 2 small carry-ons. The bathroom was big as well, but the shower was disproportionate to it. The shower felt so much smaller, and what's weird was its two double doors. The doors met at the corner of the shower and didn't close all the way, so water could easily escape to the floor. Other than that, I would 1000% stay at this hotel again next time I'm in Florence.
