I highly recommend making a reservation, especially if you have a bigger group. The atmosphere is the perfect for any tourist which is probably the majority of people dining here. If you're reading this you're probably a tourist too, and this fits the bill of the perfect dinner spot on your trip. The food was excellent the soup tasted almost the same as my grandmother used to make. An excellent old world Bavarian taste. The duck was perfectly cooked and very flavourful. A wonderful traditional Bavarian meal that I think most people would find a real treat. Since most people are here for a day or two I would put this on the list of places to check out while you're in town. Reservations are recommended but we made ours earlier in the day.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was beautiful, exceptionally comfortable, and one of the largest of our journeys through Germany. Breakfast was lovely and we were able to enjoy a morning stroll along the city walls before we had to leave. We will definitely stay again when we come back to Germany. Also, if you have a car, they will park it for you.

He did show up later to offer dessert but by then we were quite done and wanted to leave. I'll also add the we were seated at 6pm, placed our orders by 6:10 and were finally served by 7pm. That's a long time to wait. We did have bread served to us with a variety of butter and cheese but we aren't big bread eaters and I have a dairy allergy and have to avoid cheese, utter and bread unless I know what ingredients are in it. The menu is varied and interesting but as soon as I mentioned that I had a dairy allergy, I was told that the only thing I could order was the risotto of sweet-sour pickled pumpkin with lamb's lettuce pesto. They did offer to prepare a pork steak for me but it would have to be a plain fried piece of meat with no garnishments. For a fine dining restaurant, there is a lack of creativity in the kitchen. So I got the pumpkin risotto which was very good but had very little pumpkin flavor. Hubs got the roast venison with sautéed mushrooms, red cabbage and black bread dumplings except when his plate came out, they forgot to include the black bread dumplings. He had to wave down a server and it was brought out on a separate plate. His meal was drowned in this heavy dark sauce that it was difficult to taste anything else. Basically it just looked unappetizing. Once again, no creativity in the kitchen. Overall it was pretty underwhelming, especially considering the price and the elegant surroundings. It was our last night in Rothenburg and I wish we had gone somewhere more memorable to eat.

You can count on Gastof Butz to provide very hearty Franconian meals. We enjoy coming here though it's a little out of the way from the city center. That may not be a bad thing since you can avoid most of tourist traffic by venturing out on the side streets. This time I tried Hausgebackener Gemüsestrudel mit Salaten, 9,50€. It's spinach and meat-filled ravioli sliced and cooked with eggs and mixed salad plate (photos). Serving portion is very generous and filled me up very easily. Mixed salad was a very typical Franconian vegetable mix with cabbage slaw, marinated shredded carrots and sliced cucumber under the mound of well-dressed lettuce. Perhaps what was missing was some potato salad, but it was large side salad nonetheless. Salatteller mit gebratener Hähnchenbrust, 10,20€, a salad plate with grilled chicken breast. Salad plate includes aforementioned ingredients plus potato salad (photo). Atmosphere in the dining room is somewhat rustic--very typical of Franconian Gasthof (Inn/Restaurant). Actually, this was the first time we dined in the main dining room. We loved sitting in the patio al fresco during warm summer months in the past. If you are in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, you may want to venture in to the not-so-busy section of this quaint Medieval town and try Gastof Butz for yourself. Warning: Franconian dishes tend to be very hearty--true comfort food. They do traditional pork dishes (including sausages) very well, so be aware.
