The original pier was built for £12,000 in 10 months, opening in July 1889. 600 feet long, it could…read moretake steamers, and had a bandstand. In 1904 it was taken into Council hands. The Council built a new pierhead building, and removed the bandstand to a local park. In 1940, during WW2, the pier was stripped, and three spans were blown up to prevent use for enemy landings. After a long battle with the Government for compensation, the Council refurbished the pier between 1958 and 1962, with a new pierhead building, and the Mermaid hall and cafe on the end - both designed by the Council architect, John Burton. The end was closed on safety grounds in 1990, and the rest closed in 2005 for similar reasons. Using the proceeds of the sale of a nearby car park to Barratts for housebuilding, the Council refurbished - and shortened - the pier as part of a multi million pound regeneration of Boscombe seafront. It reopened in 2008, and was declared 'Pier of the year' in 2010. At the pierhead, there is a cafe, and a shop selling cigarettes, newspapers and - as the sign quaintly says - "beach requisites". Art is displayed and sold on the pier on Sundays. Permits are available for fishermen. Events are held regularly (brass bands, carol singing, etc). There are a few attractions there. You've got the sand shop, where you are given a bottle and you have to fill it in with the sand of the island. very nice souvenir! The chairlift is also a great attraction that takes you from the top of the cliff to Alum Bay Beach and back. Beware of the waves when you are on the pontoon or you can get really wet!

The coastline is of such international geological importance that it was designated England's first natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001 and is now part of a family of natural wonders including America's Grand Canyon and Australia's Great Barrier Reef. The magnificent natural limestone arch was formed when the power of the waves eroded the rock and forged a hole through the middle. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word 'thirl', which means to pierce, bore or drill." I visited via the car park (which has toilets) located on the cliff top. The walk downhill to the viewpoint is quite steep and pebbly, and can be slippery when it's raining, so wear good shoes! It's about a ten or fifteen minute walk depending on the weather, your physical ability, and popular times of day/year. On a sunny day especially, the view of Durdle Door is incredible from here (as are the famous white cliffs); the water looks almost Mediterranean! If you're from the US: carry in, carry out when visiting. If you're from the UK: respect, protect, collect when visiting. SIDE NOTE: if you're going to Lulworth Cove, there are boats (Jurassic Rib Rides, I think?) that will actually bring you up close and personal with the Durdle Door archway if you'd like a more intimate experience/different perspective!

Simply one of the most beautiful places in the world and filled with memories for me of a long time ago when I had a best friend that I thought nothing could ever take away. I was wrong and in time we learn that we are wrong about many things that we never even doubted in our infinite lack of wisdom and foresight. Maybe that is what being young is all about. Thinking you know things when you know nothing. Maybe getting old is all about discovering you know nothing. Or, maybe it should be. Life can be very sad but you make the best of it and try to stay happy and do what you think is best for yourself and for those around you and that's all you can do. It's been a long time since I came to Durdle Door. I'll never forget it and it will always have beautiful, haunting memories for me. It's one of those breathtaking, moving, surreal natural wonders of the world where the rock formation has, over millions of years, created a little doorway sticking out into the ocean. It's not like the Grand Canyon, you know. Or Niagara. Think much smaller. It's a tiny little, understated, intimately beautiful place. It's UK-style grandeur, which is always understated and moving and unspoiled. Nothing like tourist spots in some parts of the world. I'm hoping to come again (to Durdle Door, that is), in 2019. I'll add some more pictures if and when I do. It's absolutely beautiful. It's a long hike to get down here and back up again but maybe that'll be good for you. Poole central Library has everything you could dream of in a library the choice of books is vast as…read morewell as their choice of Music CDs and DVDs to hire. These are charged at around a pound a week so it is much cheaper than the video store and you have them for longer. When Poole library was refurbished a few years back installed was an IT suite with free internet access for everyone and although I obviously have my computer at home if I ever need I am a short bus ride from one. I have never had any problems with staff they have always been extremely helpful. The central Library is situated above the bus station and Dolphin centre so it has great access for public transport. Car parks are a little further away but still within a short walk and although it is set on two levels there are lifts fitted. This is by far the best library in the area.

It's a small place, but captivating. It was the first time the children had been inside a…read morelighthouse, the tours were not on, but they enjoyed just being there and having a look about, my youngest liked the touching table with shells, feathers etc to feel. Outside we watched the rough sea crash against the rocks and as we walked along the coast it sprayed up and over us a few times, the kids loved it, especially trying to catch the seaweed in the water sprays. There is a charge for the car park.

Portland Castle is not located in Oregon. In order to visit this place, you have to travel to…read morePortland, England. For $11.50 pounds, I think it is worth the price of admission. We spent a couple of hours exploring the place. It is not a castle, in the traditional sense. It is more of a Fort. It was built back in 1539 and 1540, and it played a part in the first and second World Wars, in protecting the area from invaders. There is plenty to see and do so you can spend as much time as you want here. We were here for a couple of hours exploring the fort and the grounds. The audio tour is included in the admission price, and it gives you the history of the place. Although we enjoyed our time here. I think that a one-time visit is all that we needed.

The castle gives quite a good impression what it was like to be a soldier back then. A part of the exhibition covers the preparations of the Allied armies for the D-Day invasion of France in June 1944. Of special interest was an information sheet for the newly arrived US soldiers that showed the differences of US and British English.
