One of the best places in town to see a play! The MLP puts on some of the best, most lavish, and…read morewell-performed productions in this region! It is truly the essence of what college theater is all about. I have seen countless plays here and I have loved every single one! The past productions have run from the family-friendly ("The Christmas Carol"-I've gone the last two seasons!) to the risque' ("The Shape of Things"-one of my all-time faves!) This season's lineup looks to be more of the same and I could not be happier about that! The season kicks off September 30th with "The Glory of Living" , a finalist for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It also plays October 1, 2, 6-8. The next production will be "Five Women Wearing The Same Dress", a comedy by Alan Ball, writer and producer of "True Blood" and "American Beauty". It runs from November 10-13. "The Santaland Diaries" is a holiday comedy that should NOT be missed by the great writer David Sedaris, author of "Me Talk Pretty One Day", "Naked", and "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim". It runs December 15-18. And in the Spring, they will have-what else? "The Spring Awakening"! A musical, by who else? Duncan Sheik!-Yes, THAT Duncan Sheik! From, "I am barely breathing, and I can't find the air, I don't know who I'm kidding, imagining you care"...C'mon, people! Don't make me sing the whole thing! "The Spring Awakening" will take place April 13-15 and 19-20. Support College Theater and the Arts! Support Centenary College! I saw Blue Man Group here last night, as a belated birthday present from my wife (We've always wanted to catch them out in Vegas at the Venetian, but usually get distracted by something else or other once we're out there, which is easy to do!). The show was amazing! It was one of the most energetic, intensely creative and funny live performances I have EVER seen! We LOVED it! We are so thrilled to have finally caught their show after all these years! And there's no place we would have rather seen BMG other than The Venetian! The Strand was the perfect host for this show! We LOVE this venue! (This review is an update! See my previous review here on Yelp!) We are VERY excited about this upcoming season at The Strand! BMG plays one more show here tonight at 8pm. Catch it if you can! It's fantastic! Here's some other highlights for this season, check the website for other shows and dates as there are many, many more! And as lovely as she is as a two story venue, I hold just as equal appreciation and admiration for the history that she displays both within and without. In front of this building right off Clyde Fant Parkway in downtown Shreveport, is the large statue of this city's, once a town's, namesake, Captain Henry Miller Shreve (Yelp Check In-Captain Henry Miller Shreve Statue! He adores selfie-seekers, just fyi, so selfie on, out front of here with the Captain!) Also quite appropriate is the placement of the Captain Shreve statue here, as you can see the Red River from here, where Shreve and his steam vessel the Heliopolis helped clear the aforementioned nearby waterway of the miles-long dastardly debris known infamously as The Great Raft! The interior of this theater pays further homage with large marble postings dedicated to both Shreve, and on the flip side, the Heliopolis. The gorgeous venue itself, has excellent acoustics, and great seating all around. The Shreveport Symphony and Ballet give unforgettable performances here often, and there are also world wide stars and touring shows that house here on occasion. The gorgeous structure itself seems to add that much more glory to an already glorious evening or matinee afternoon.
