ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE! There are so many reasons why Don and his business are terrible, that I think it's easier to bullet them out for you! - Booked and fully paid for a six-hour trip 1.5 months in advanced. - Don then ignored all messages, texts, and emails up until 2 DAYS BEFFORE THE TRIP, at which time HE WAS TRYING TO CANCEL THE TRIP! - We had 12 folks total, with some flying into Boston for this day! - After saying cancelling is not an option for our group, Don refused to give us our original trip of 1 pm - 7 pm. He would only give us 10 am - 2 pm because he had other parties booked for our time that he'd rather not upset. - When we booked, it stated food, beer, and liquor beverages included in our package, then Don tried to say this was not included once I got him on the phone. We had to fight back on this too. Just an awful experience. We finally decide to do the four-hour trip between 10 am - 2 pm vs our original six-hour trip between 1 pm - 7 pm because it was that or nothing, and the group had been looking forward to this day for months! Then Don shows up late on the day of the trip. And then he docks early and tells us to get off the boat before it's even 2pm. Also, the food was maybe enough for 6 people, not 12. And there were NO liquors as we were told there would be after our fighting about all the other wrong things happening -- just a cooler of beers. Perhaps he was saving the food and liquor for the parties he preferred to take on the water (his words, not mine). Apparently one party was a repeat customer and the other party was a bachelorette party so, forget about us booking 1.5 months in advance - we were just super unimportant. Don knows he messed up and admitted to such. He said the only way he would take us on the water (even though HE TRIED TO CANCEL and gave us a hard time) was if I promised not to give him a bad review. I did promise to not give a bad review IF for the two days leading up to our trip if he actually did what he said he was going to do. Well, he did not, so here is my review. And on top of all the things I've already listed about him being late for our modified trip, not giving us the appropriate food and beverages, not communicating, etc. he was also just a straight jerk to us, his dog, and his staff. Based on Phone Call: Called to inquire about a boat rental - Owner seemed incredibly skeptical after I mentioned having grown up on a boat but not having any recent driving experience. We booked a 17.5 ft boat for July 4th on the harbor for 4 hours and went to the designated meet up spot at 8pm. The merchant never showed so we started calling and texting and got no reply until after 11 pm that evening stating he had a broken phone. Who runs a business and doesn't know they have charters to pick up? We weren't the only people there waiting for a boat either. After reading the other reviews from other displeased clients, we realized we were SOL so we cut our losses and found a spot up at Rowe's Wharf to have a few drinks and watch fireworks. Do not rent from this company! He doesn't run his business in a way that a business should be run. This, my friends is what's up. You like boats? Of course you do. Sure all those harbor cruises are nice, but once you've done a few, you get the point. This however takes the same idea, and kicks it up a notch by putting you in control. Make some sandwiches, pack up a cooler, grab some friends, some sun screen and head out to explore the Boston Harbor and its Islands. In well under 4 hours we were able to zip up around the tobin and Zakim bridges, head over past castle island and pleasure bay to spectacle island, then turned south and headed to marina bay, and then doubled back to deer island. It was a great time. 3 of us took turns navigating the boat, charting the course, and keeping lookout for rouge ways, boats and the like. All in all it was a great time, and a reasonably inexpensive way to spend a day. Do it! read more

Bought the Living Social for 5-person boat. Here are the highlights: Pros: Access to a boat and freedom to navigate the harbor on your own (good for those with some boating experience) Inexpensive and casually run by Don Flexibility - Don is happy to accommodate schedules and changes if notified in advance. New engine (2014) on the boat so it was easy to start. Garmin GPS was able to make up for rickety boat gauges and was useful for speed/depth/navigation. Don met with us to review the navigation, life jackets, practice maneuvering the boat, etc. before we left. Cons: Don is difficult to get a hold of... keep calling, call him back and call to confirm. I wouldn't trust text/email. Older boat so gauges were not that accurate. Because Don may be difficult to get a hold of you may find communicating with him a struggle/annoying. Overall: We had a great time! Don said that we could reschedule if the weather looked bad but he needed to know 3 hours before our launch time because he did not want to put the boat in and bring it over just to have us change our mind. Very reasonable prices and requests. He was flexible in letting us stay out 20 minutes longer when we called to request this from the boat. Just make sure to communicate with Don to reserve, confirm and remind -- he is difficult to get in touch with but well worth it when you do! read more

Never having chartered a boat before, I was unsure of what to expect. We used this company yesterday for a 2 hour private charter for a bachelorette party. We first found them on Groupon, and we are so glad we did! 10 of us were able to board the boat and enjoy the sunset over the Boston skyline. Don and his team took superb care of us, from being patient when we got lost trying to find the proper dock at Rowe's Wharf while navigating the area in our heels, to being willing and flexible to drop us directly at our restaurant at the Seaport for our dinner reservation. We were able to bring our own drinks on board, which we did, but they were well prepared for us, offering us cheese plates, chip bowls and 2 well stocked drink coolers of their own too! The Indiscretion has plenty of space to sit inside, off the back of the boat or in front as well. They have a Bluetooth speaker to let you play your own music, and a bathroom on board. We had an appointment for 8am. 8am comes around and we're calling the company because there's nobody at the dock with the boat we rented. 8:30am rolls around, me and my friends are sad that our boat isn't here, but we finally got a call back. The guy told us that he had a rough night the night before, and that he'd have someone come with the boat. So 15 minutes after our boat finally shows up. At first, the kid told us we had to still be back at 12pm, even though they gipped us a hour. We eventually set on a deal, and we were on our way. A truly spectacular experience! I was fortunate enough to have a friend who stumbled upon a deal for a 2-hour private yacht charter. Was really exhausted from a long week at the mill but I couldnt exactly pass up my first private yacht invitation, now could I? We arrived with a pretty large group who didnt all show up on time. At first I was worried that this was going to complicate the voucher we had bought but Capt Don was very cool about it. He took us for a lovely tour of the city and I had my first opportunity to witness the islands state park as the sun set into the unmarred sky. From the moment we slipped aboard to the moment we stumbled off the yacht, it was an unforgettable experience. Alcohol was flowing and we were dancing..all the while music blaring and pacifying the rocky tempo of the sea. The boat wasnt exactly as large as I expected but it turned out to be perfect and made for an even homier and cozier experience for our group of 15? Capt Don was the perfect host and was impressive in his ability to somehow simultaneously maintain all hands on deck, charter our route & deal with a drunken lot with a smile on his face. Even if you have had a good experience with Don in the past, you should be ashamed for continuing to support or recommend someone with such documented unethical behavior (personal and professional), as is clearly written in these numerous reviews. My friends and I felt like we were in actual danger from the owner's treatment of us after a tiny boat operating mistake (after he didn't give any sort of operating or safety instructions, despite that being advertised on his website). His verbal harassment of us (5 young adult women) had us inquiring about our ability to file a full legal complaint against him and his company. With regards to the owner "Don" I guess I caught him on a couple of good days or I bring out the best in him. I get the impression he simply sizes up your abilities to pilot the boat via phone and in person based on whatever the hell his method is. He then gives you the keys to the boat. There's a lot of freedom, you're not followed around or given some sort of two square-mile area to boat. If you want to take the damn thing to Portugal he could probably care less as long as you pay him. It's a boat, you assume a risk. if you have no clue what you're doing or need a completely brand new boat this is not the place to rent from. If you want to get out on the water in a reasonably well maintained boat then this is the place for you. If you are 'high maintenance' you need to look elsewhere. It's not cheap but then again look at where he is and look at his overhead, with all that taken into consideration it's a pretty reasonable deal. Customer request: Please get more boats, please update the boats just a tiny bit. Just a little bit of a sprucing up and maybe procure one more center console 19 foot +/- would be great. Here are the facts of our day on one of their rental boats. 1. Boats are seaworthy but tired. Gauges did not work and the boats are not especially clean. 2. Service by the staff is excellent. 3. Beware the company owner who is prone to shouting at you from his boat. Apparently this behavior is not new. I have owned boats for 20 years. I am well aware of weight distribution. Yesterday I am barely underway since I was in the no wake zone when a guy in a passing boat (she looked to be around 34 ft; the boat not the guy) starts shouting at me. Apparently he had decided that the weight was not properly distributed which was complete nonsense. The engine was running smoothly (you need to operate by hearing since the gauges did not work) and the vessel was safely underway with no danger to passengers or the vessel. I will steer clear of the abrasive individual that owns this firm. I will not be returning. You will have to make your own choice based upon the facts. read more

Got a Groupon when I tried to make the reservation the guy on the phone stated I needed to have experience when I said I have driven a boat before he said it was not enough and I needed to pay $100 for an hr long class to rent a boat for 2 hrs!! WOW! So UNprofessional. Booked the 25' WELLCRAFT 250 SPORTSMAN CUDDY CABIN more than a month in advance. We confirmed the meet up spot that morning with Donald Symington over the phone and he tried to ask us if we could push back out appointment 2 hours before our appointment. We declined as we had people coming from out of state for this event. When 6 of us met at at the confirmed meet up spot at barking crab no one from the company was able to be found. WE had to reach out to this company and call them to ask them where they were and Donald Symington told us it was going to have to be pushed back an hour later and we would have to have a smaller boat. So we inconveniently go and have a bite to eat at the barking crab to wait the hour, and then connect with him over the phone after an hour later and he states that both boats are being fixed and we have to cancel. Poor business and a wasted trip!!! We had friends come from out of state for this event. I would not rely on this company at all! Save the time and trip and use a different more reliable company. read more

This was a blast. The rental was pain free. The boat was ready for us when we showed up. If you're a pleasure boat owner you are probably going to think that the boat is a bit dinged up and you would be right; however, the engine was great, the depth sounder worked fine, and it is a rental in a crowded urban harbor. It was perfect for us. If you want highly varnished bright work, you are probably better off buying your own boat and being the only driver; if you want a fun time seeing Boston from the ocean, the rental works out just great. We had the 20' center console which was comfortable for six adults and we took a four hour evening rental. This was long enough for us to head out to spectacle island, tie up at the dock ($20) eat our picnic on shore, then head back to the city via a couple of other islands along the small craft channel entrance to Boston Harbor. An easy hour just putting around the harbor rounded off the day. Just be warned, in any kind of swell - and you are in a busy tidal waterway/ocean - this boat is not a particularly dry environment. Just be prepared, with dry clothes, waterproof jacket/pants, and everything you want to keep dry stowed in the front locker and you will be fine. Also, don't forget to budget for gas - in money and time; you will have to fill up before you return - allow 30 minutes for this (trying to rush in a no-wake zone is not going to be a relaxing end to your day.) All in all, six adults for four hours, rental, mooring, gas and taxes came to around $14 per person per hour. A great way to spend the evening in Boston. Thanks guys. Unfortunately we will not be using this service again. We had made reservations more than 2 months in advance and reconfirmed twice. We show up the day of, ready to go with snacks and drinks and excitement for a fun few hours on the boat just to be told we won't be leaving at our scheduled time of 2pm, but we will have to wait until 3pm. Then we are told at 3pm it may be another hour or so, and we aren't getting our original boat of 25', we are getting a 20' boat. After our discouragement and the run around we were clearly being given, we decided to cancel. Our precious Sunday afternoon in the summer was ruined and the company seemed to not care at all nor offer any alternative solutions or resolution. I would not recommend them. read more

I would like to be able to give a review on the boat ride itself except we never actually got there. We had the 12 person private tour for 2 hour booked for a saturday morning. However, at 3:00 the night before they called to make us re-schedule. A more profitable charter came up for them and because we had received a discouted rate through Truebates, we were "last on their priority list". They were rude, unreasonable and confrontational. We, up to this point, had been extremely flexable and told them that because we had children (and babysitters) we could show up at 8 am. They canceled the tour and told us they would send a check. Do not even consider this company. Everything will seem legit and squared away from the time you rent your boat. You get confirmation and an email with a location to pick up and drop off the boat. We went to the location as described on the email which was behind the Barking Crab and we had arrived at the scheduled time of 8PM on the Fourth of July. This was not a last minute booking either. We had booked the boat in advance. The boat was identified as available on the website. Everything on our end was done as it should be for a customer. You pay your rental fee up front and you meet at a designated spot. While we waited at the dock for the boat to show up it was found out that there was another group waiting for the same reason. They had rented a boat from this company as well. 8:30 comes around and there's still no sign of a boat. The lighting is getting darker at this time and we worry we will not get to see the fireworks. Once 9PM hit and we waited for the hour past our start rental period, we decided the boat was not coming. We did try to contact the person via phone call and text. Multiple calls were made and multiple texts were sent with no answer or reply. It was later discovered that the phone was "broken" per the owner of this company. However he did mention that he saw our texts. So why not try to borrow a phone or find a way to get in touch with your clients? This was supposed to be a great celebration night and it turned into a huge disappointment. We will be getting our money back one way or another as we never received the services we paid for. read more

My sister had this event planned all summer, called the weekend before to make sure all paperwork was done, and spoke to him the day before through email and on the phone. It took over 2 hours for the boat to arrive (telling us different locations, pushing back the time, telling us to reschedule, demanding WE took a taxi to meet HIM despite giving us directions). I was the part of the group of 12 who was scheduled to go this past weekend I ended up not even getting on the boat because some of the people were too angry/frustrated to even be near the Captain at that point. My experience with Don and Boston Harbor Boat Rentals was equally terrible. Recently, we decided to spend a day cruising the harbor and islands . About two weeks prior, we reserved a 25' boat for a full day. Don was going to call us to discuss the details, but he never did. The day before our intended cruise, I finally called him to find out where and when to pick up the boat. He told me he had a boat for us, but only a 20'. He also said he was very busy and had more important things to do right now, but he would call me later that night. He never did. The next morning we got packed for the day, and I gave him a call. He said he had a boat for us , but is was only a 17'. As we had made our plans and were ready to go, I reluctantly agreed. When we got to the mariner, he was preparing the 20' boat (which had been promised to us) for someone else. He finally came over and showed us the 17': a filthy, sorry excuse for a boat. We told him we were not going out to Georges Island in that and walked away. He is the rudest, most unreliable person I've ever met. Deal with him at your own peril! read more

I booked the Indiscretion Yacht about 3 weeks before my event, so I was worried I had waited too long, but I called Don and it was surprisingly easy to arrange the charter. I booked for a party of 12 people in occasion of my boyfriend's surprise 30th birthday. Don offered us the option of some snacks and a barbecue meal and an open bar, which all the guests loved. The day before the event, Don called me with some scheduling changes, which I was a little bit worried about but we ended up pushing the booking to 6-10, which worked great. Don was flexible and accommodating about everything. Our hostess Jennifer was awesome and everyone loved the ribs, chicken and steak that she prepared. Don's helper Matt was also a big help in taking our group pictures. My boyfriend loved the whole experience and I'm super grateful to the lovely crew for making everything smooth. read more

Never and I mean Neeeeeeeeever do business with this joke of a human being & joke of a company. His demeanor has almost ruined the sea for me. (my true feelings) Don is the owner and the main contact for this company. He is UNPROFESSIONAL & lacks the skills necessary to be in any sort of business where people skills are required. He is curt, discourteous and swears AT you. (and this was before we had even gone out) In this day & age THIS BEHAVIOR is totally unexpected & unacceptable from another human being whom you've just met & who is trying to sell you a service. Because we had all traveled from far & were paying $35 for parking for the day, and we were at the boat already, we dealt with his discourtesy and departed the dock. If you have less than 10 people in your party, you are treated as unimportant on the phone and in person. His boats are old and the gauges do not work at all. Take pictures of the boat and the propeller before and after your excursion for proof that you did not damage the boat. Extraneous charges to your credit card after your trip are VERY common with this company. (based on my own cc, and NUMEROUS yelp reviews) (This is not the kind of person you want to have your cc info.) (Personally - i wish i had looked on yelp before I had done business with this company) & good luck dealing with your cc company for hours afterwards providing proof. save yourself so much hassle & headaches by avoiding this business AT ALL COSTS. Captain Don is the rudest, most unprofessional businessman I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. The day before my reservation, I called to see if it could be rescheduled since the weather called for thunderstorms during the time of our ride. I was shocked when Captain Don immediately snapped, told me no I could not reschedule, then continued on a rant about how he was "in the middle of something really important," and told me I had no idea what kind of stuff he was dealing with. He then told me he hadn't had a chance to look at the weather and told me, not asked, told me to call him back when he had time for me. Flabbergasted (literally the only appropriate terminology for how I felt) I agreed to call him at a later time. I figured everyone gets busy, overwhelmed and stressed; I caught him at a bad time. I waited a little more than an hour to call him again and resolve this. I decided to go into the second call like the first conversation never happened. I call again, Captain Don answered and I said, "Hello, I would like to reschedule my reservation for tomorrow evening due to the impending inclement weather," his response, "You know, I really feel like you're pressuring me and I don't appreciate it." (I honestly wished I could have recorded this). I asked him to handle his business with some degree of professionalism. He then tried to interrupt me, so I spoke louder, when he started TAUNTING me "Who's yelling now?! Who's raising their voice now?!" I told him that his behavior and attitude were beyond inappropriate and unacceptable for a businessman and I hoped he did not treat all his customers the way he had been dealing with me. He mockingly apologized for not speaking to me the way I felt I deserved to be spoken to and continued to tell me that I was been aggressive towards him and he had a lot he was dealing with that I was not at the top of his priority list. He then hung up on me. Disgusting and appalled, I was able to contact Trubates and get a refund of my purchase. This man was beyond rude and unprofessional, he seems to just be unstable. DO NOT -REPEAT- DO NOT give this man (don) any of your money i honestly dont feel like even getting into my entire conversation with this man let me just say that in my 45 years on earth ive never had a ruder more horrendous conversation with anyone in my entire life-this is after i called once a week for 3 weeks each time he said he would call me back and never did-im a very patient person and i think i gave him more then ample time to get back to me-ive had worst enemies treat me much better than he treated me on the phone-if i can get just one person to not pay him for his services and save you from our blood pressure going up ive done m job-i sincerely hope this guy gets what he deserves and goes out of business read more
