Love this Club! First year as a member and sailed at least once a week for the entire six month season. By year's end I sailed a 30 foot Pearson up to Marblehead with another first year member. Great lessons with Vern & John, and super caring Alex & Eric in the club's launch get us out to our sailboats moored by Rowe's wharf. Boats aren't the newest, but all safe & sea worthy. It's cheaper than maintaining a boat and No Headaches (the part I like). read more

I've been a member of BHSC for 25 yrs so obviously I think it's a great alternative to owning a boat. You join for a membership level based on the type of boat you want to use and then can use those boats plus all at lower levels, subject to availability. Practically that means I can go daysailing any time without a reservation. Launch replies immediately to a radio call and launch drivers Eric and Alex could not be more friendly and helpful. Weekend trips and longer vacations require reservations, but with common sense planning I have never had a problem. Of course, it helps to make sure everyone is aware of your plans. Boats, while not new, are well maintained by staff who are experts on boat systems and are prepared beautifully for longer vacation cruises. It is sailing and stuff does happen, and whenever something has come up I've had almost instantaneous response from president Mark Healy, by phone, email or text. Mark is beyond expert on mechanical matters. Once he talked me through getting a seized up dingy motor to work. On a recent trip we ran out of propane in P'town, couldn't get the tank filled, and he DROVE FROM BOSTON TO PTOWN to bring us 2 full tanks. That is amazing. I think about buying my own boat sometimes, but for a Boston resident the convenience of BHSC is just too appealing. read more

Good stuff! Did a day sail on one of the larger boats; staff was helpful, accessible and the boats were reasonably priced and outfitted well for the local water. We took a Pearson 26 down to the harbor islands for lunch and back. Totally choice. Only thing that kept me from 5 stars is that the boats do have a few miles on them (although nothing like Tabarly says here (roll eyes)). Oh, and you need to know what is up to charter one of these guys - experience required. Madras shorts and whale belts may also be required. Your mileage may vary. read more

Super Helpful staff. Vast well equipped fleet. And the Boston harbor has so much to offer. We came on a windy day (more than 30m/h gusts) and decided after 1h to return to harbor for safety. Mark (the manager) understood we got winded, and simply didn't charge us. Definitely coming back for at least a day sail. read more

This place is the worst run business in Boston. My experiences have been: 1. Sign up for Advanced Sailing, show up the day of the class, wait for 2 hours until Mark gets ahold of the instructor, confirm Mark never told instructor he was teaching and told to go home we'll try to reschedule 2. Sign up for 5 day Masters class, show up at 9:00 AM, sit around until 7:00 PM, get on boat, leave around 8:00 PM, get back in 4 days later at 5:00 AM and consider that last day a full day. 3. Take lots of classes that are supposed to include instruction and preparation for the ASA exams and never once go over any of the ASA content. I pre-paid for all of the classes otherwise I would have stopped at 1. 4. Only sign up for the classes so I could get my ASA certifications to be able to sail elsewhere and then receive an email from Mark saying they've lost their ASA membership and exams will no longer be offered. Sorry for the inconvenience. 5. Showing up for class and not having enough students signed up for the class to use the spinnaker so then sitting around for a couple of hours calling potential people to join us so we can go out. 6. Reserve a boat, get a confirmation that it is available, buy charts for the trip, put down my non-refundable deposit on three nights of mooring, get call from Mark saying he actually had two other people reserve it for some of my trip so it is no longer available, loose money from mooring, not sail at all, have drawer full of expensive and unused charts. This is on top of every single class starting at least an hour late and none of them being confirmed via email or phone. Very poorly run facility. I don't know what other options exist, but if there are any at all I'd recommend them. read more

This place is so poorly run and not at all interested in doing the right thing. Mark, I am not sure if you remember me but I knew I would tell people about you. I took the course here for $800 because I wanted the ASA certification. I spent five days on the boat and never was their review of material. There is no classroom and they lost my status at the end of the class and he said I never took the damn class. Then he strung me along so long that I could not take the ASA cert and finally said that I would have to take the course over again!! The instructor was good but Mark is terrible. Avoid!!! read more

Boston Harbor Sailing Club - A bad charter experience My experience chartering a Cal 33 from The Boston Harbor Sailing Club (BHSC) for 3 days was so bad that I want to do what I can to alert those who are considering chartering from that Club to think twice about it. After I paid $ 1300 for the 3 day charter , I was told that the prior user of the boat had not topped off the fuel and water and I was asked to do that at the start of my charter. I did it at a cost of $56 and BHSC has refused to reimburse me for that cost, although I topped off the fuel at the end of the charter as I had been requested to do. After motoring out of the harbor on the first day,, I was confronted with the fact that the Raymarine chart plotter did not operate so as to supply me with bearing and distance to a waypoint. That is basic information that any GPS system should supply. If I couldn't use the chart plotter and wanted to navigate by dead reckoning, there was not even a parallel rule on board. I returned to the harbor and called BHSC. Mark Healy, who runs the Club, said he was unfamiliar with the equipment. He first claimed that I was ignorant about using chart plotters and suggested I study the thick manual that was on board. I told him that I knew how to use chart plotters and that it wasn't operating properly. He eventually had someone call me who first said that getting bearing and distance to a waypoint was "too sophisticated" for the equipment. After saying he was not that familiar with the operation of the chart plotter and had simply installed it, he eventually talked me through an operation for resetting the chart plotter in a manner which would permit it to display bearing and distance to a waypoint. I had asked Healy before I took the charter if I would have a dinghy and engine and the answer was simply yes. What he failed to tell me was the dinghy was not inflated. What he also didn't tell me was that not only would I have to inflate the dinghy and mount the engine, he expected me to deflate the dinghy, dry it out, and put it back on the boat at the end of the charter, which could have been a two to three hour operation particularly since the dinghy was very wet after being in heavy seas. Between the need to top off the fuel and water, inflate the dinghy and mount the engine, and the problem with chart plotter, I basically lost the first day of my charter. I have not asked to be reimbursed for the lost time although I should be compensated for that. Had I been told that I was expected to deflate the dinghy at the end of my charter, dry it out and stow it on it on the boat, I would not have taken the charter. I did what I have done on all the many charters that I have been on, I left the dinghy inflated and put it on the dinghy dock that was maintained by the marina. Healy has demanded that I pay the $86 that the marina charged for the time it took them to deflate, and put the dinghy on the boat. He uses that as an excuse to not reimburse me for fuel. What I reasonably anticipated when I agreed to charter a boat from BHSC was that there would be someone in Westport, where I was to start my charter, to go over the boat and its equipment with me. There was no staff from the BHSC at the Westport marina where the boat was. Nor was there any written material on board that provided information regarding the operation of the boat and its equipment. Without going into much detail, there were many things I should have been shown or at least told about. An example is the unusual location of the outlet of the holding tank--the outlet was in the anchor well, under the anchor and anchor rode; the location of the key to open the deck plate--there was no key to do that--I had to improvise. There were many other things I should have been told. There is nothing on BHSC's website that would have alerted me that I was not renting from an organization which would supply me with the same services that are ordinarily given by charterers or renters of sailboats. that the galley would have in it adequate utensils, flatware, bowls, etc. for my use. There were just a few utensils, plates, etc on board. Such as there were are cruddy and not useable. that the boat would be reasonably clean and neat. The galley was a mess. The website says there is "refrigeration." There is an ice chest that had water in it which wasn't draining out and there was mold. When I called Healy, he said that there was a pump on board to take out the water and abused me for not being able to find it quickly when he told me where it was. When we boiled water in one of the pots, the crud on the pot rose to the top. The nav table was a mess. At the end of the charter, when I complained about all of the above, Healy told me that in his Boston location, he has staff personel to familiarize charterers with th read more
