It's been a long but wonderful road. I am thankful for my membership at the First Unitarian in Philadelphia for many years and since I moved to Washington DC, at All Souls Unitarian. Still, this magnificent building is no different than going to Santiago de Compostela for a Roman Catholic and worth of a pilgrimage. This is the Unitarian Church that made it all happen in the world of Liberal religion and humanistic faith. Although the actual edifice has changed, within its confines, laid in 1729, the American Unitarian Church was founded. This was the worship center for Ralph Waldo Emerson, attended by David Thoreau, Pickering, and a Who's Who of our Founding Fathers. It was the home church of William Ellery Channing, who ministered there for almost 20 years. It was also one of the first sites of rebellion against the British, the site of Massachusetts's ratification of the Constitution, and the site of the first petition of 1788 for abolition of slavery. In modern times, it was also the site of the first legal same sex wedding in the United States in 2004. Like its sister church at All Souls in Washington, the edifice is patterned after St. Martin in the Fields in England. The 16 massive Tiffany stained glass windows surround the New England-style box pews of solid American chestnut where families would worship and keep away from Winter drafts. The service today was especially powerful. it was titled "No sanction for Bigotry" and was derived from George Washington's letter to the first Jewish synagogue in the US in Truro, Rhode Island, in which our Founding Father uttered these same words. The sermon was co-delivered by a Muslim imam and together, the Imam and the Reverend Kim K. Crawford Harvie delivered a rebuke to the radical philosophy of exclusion and hate proposed by many political pundits. The service was well attended and following the service, I was able to meet and chat with many of the parishioners. It was indeed a wonderful experience.

I will admit it can be tough to meet people on a Sunday morning, but I have been a part of one of their weekly community groups for years and they are my family in the city. No matter what is going on I have always felt loved by those folks. So I encourage you to find your neighborhood community group if you are thinking about attending Citylife. It is there where you'll have the opportunity to connect with folks. The staff and pastors are also all great folks, and it has been awesome to get to know them and their hearts for the Lord and the city of Boston. And I can't not mention the music, as they have one of the most talented worship bands I have ever heard.

Lovely, friendly people but with friendships so deeply established it would be difficult to join in. As an outside, I could see the young families sitting together chatting while the newcomers sat on the other side by themselves. The message was hopeful, I loved the confession prayer, and I appreciated the sheets they gave out so we could read aloud. They meet at a middle school and parking is surprisingly available. Reality sends out some nice emails to keep you involved too. I believe this is a beautiful community, maybe just not for me!

Worship music was lovely, but overall the experience felt short and by the time I settled in, it was over. The sermon was a prerecorded video too which was a bummer especially for my first time. I signed up for their communications, which was nice in the beginning, but quickly felt spammy. I'm sure the community is lovely! I just don't think this place is for me.

Though a God-fearing man, I've not been much of a church-going man these past 10+ years or so. I've…read moregot myself a Catholic block in a bad way, and there's simply no way I can align my personal principles with the majority of Church tenets. Plus, there's that whole pesky issue of a decade's worth of accumulated sins, both venial and mortal, that I'd need to confess. But, if I were to return the fold of Christianity, if I were again to step willing into a church for something other than a wedding or a funeral, it would be at some place much like the Mission Church. Check that: it WILL be the Mission Church. I wouldn't say they are the number one reason I love by neighborhood, and why I haven't moved in 7 years, but they are pretty close to the top. I know why this allure: they all, each and every one, get dressed to the nines each and every Sunday; they are simply the friendliest and most joyful looking set of churchgoers I've ever seen; the church itself is massive and majestic. But more than anything, more than even getting me some Jesus, it really all comes down to the music. Simply put, the Mission Church knows how to get down (or is that get on up? Or up for the down-stroke?). I've never been inside for a service, but I have a feeling this is far and away the best dance party north of the river. Just really simply, rousing, soaring old-timey Gospel - big ole choir, lots of tambourines, lots of hand clapping, lots of call and response. Proper. Their services go for about 5 hours, and I'd say about 4 hours of it is a Gospel rave up. Roof = torn off, sucka. I'm there
