While the library was lively with people in nearly every corner, it never felt overcrowded, and there were no lines or delays to get in. From the moment I entered, I was mesmerized by its beauty. The architecture is breathtaking, with intricate wall designs and stunning paintings that give it such a grand, historic feel. It reminded me a lot of the New York Public Library with its stately charm. The library is massive, with two or three floors to explore (I may have missed some corners!). My favorite space was Bates Hall--that iconic reading room with rows of long tables and green lamps was everything I imagined and more. The McKim Courtyard was another highlight. It's such a serene, picturesque space, and it has this vintage vibe that transported me to a scene from a classic movie. One of the coolest things I learned was that this is America's first and oldest free large public library, which adds to its charm. Entry is free, but there are optional paid services like the café for tea, coffee, or snacks. the most convenient and scenic library in the city I really enjoy this library mostly because of its location. It is easily accessible right off the Copley stop on the Green Line, and adjacent to Newbury Street so you can go shopping/on a leisurely stroll before or after you ive into your books. The library is pretty vast, with 3 floors to browse from - including DVD rentals, which is great if I don't feel like paying money to rent an older film. Also, I usually get all my school books here to avoid paying for literature I'll never look at after classes are over. Oh, also if you go to their customer service area you can request tickets for free admission to most of the local museums (I've gotten free aquarium and Museum of Science tickets here before, but you do have to ask very early in advance - like at least a month). The outside architecture of the library is something I also really enjoy, especially the marble steps where you can find a majority of the public resting on during the warmer/summer months. Library cards and admission are both obviously free, so enjoy the scenery and take a visit here sometime! read more

The Boston Public Library is a great place to come to study, read, work and even relax. It was the first public library to allow people to check out books and take them home. The architecture is beautiful and the courtyard with it's wonderful fountain is a great place to relax in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. I feel as if every time I come here there is a couple getting engagement photos done, goes to show how picturesque a location it truly is. As many have mentioned the ability to check books out online and then stop by to pick them up is convenient, but then you'd miss most of the beauty of the place. Stop by and relax for a few hours. Obviously, parking is an issue. Situated right in Copley Plaza you can easily make this library part of a larger day trip to include shopping, delicious food, and even an event at the Hynes Convention Center just down the street. The security team in the Johnson Building of the Boston Public Library is horrible. They are extremely rude and act like bullies. I've seen them screaming, actually screaming, at people at 4:47pm kicking them out of the library. It is absolutely maddening and I will never go back there. It's like they hired prison guards that patrol the place just dying to yell at someone and get in their face. A library is supposed to be a calming community center, but I get anxiety just thinking about them. A harassment lawsuit is definitely in their future. And I will attest to their bullying if need be. There were even other people video taping them. Just awful... read more

Did you know that the BPL is the oldest research library in the country? Meaning that anyone with a card has access to their archives? And they have TONS of stuff worth looking at, both in books and architecture. Go to the old building, and start at the third floor. Most people miss this, but it's where John Singer Sargeant's masterpiece is... well, you either like it or you don't but HE considered it to be his masterpiece and that's good enough for me. Visit the reading room on the second floor (shhh! people are working!) and then head down to look at the lobby and the amazing courtyard. I could live in the BPL and be quite happy. read more

This massive overbearing library complex is made of two components an older building by Mckim,Mead, and White which is sort of at the pinnacle of the Renaissance Revival and an interesting modern addition by the godfather of the "new international style" aka "modernism"....Phillip Johnson! (recently deceased and despised in the press) Definitely worth a look if only for the architecture. But also probably for the massive collection of books. Spend some time reading in the generously sized and elegantly outfitted courtyard or the historic reading rooms. read more

Libraries may have lost some of their functionality to the internet, but there is still lots of stuff to do here. They have a collection of over 700,000 books in the library. Not to mention quiet places to read, restaurants, the most magnificent garden courtyard, and some beautiful (and famous) wall paintings. The outside architecture is great, and the inside, especially that garden, is just magnificent. Also, out front there are two black statues of women with famous people engraved on them. The Boston Public Library is currently undergoing some renovations but it still manages to be a top library. The size and interesting layout are what initially catches the eye, with a courtyard and mezzanine area rounding out the aesthetics. There are many rooms in this place and I find it enjoyable walking around trying to find them all. The computers are frustrating as the browsers need to be updated, plus the elevator is kind of wonky, so it can't get five stars. Still it's a great library. read more

Whether you are a local or a tourist this library is work a look. All should visit the old building overlooking the square and Trinity Church (and the reflection of said church in the reflection of the John Hancock building). The study areas are beautiful, well kept, and you can even (surprise as its a library) study in them. I'm not as fond of the newer building but you can take a look and there is a lot more room to study. Then, of course, there are all the books. :-) read more

Maybe i'm one of the few whose idea of a good time is checking out the local lib, but if you at all like books, stop by the BPL one afternoon. cool marble interiors take the edge off a hot day and losing yourself among books is one way to shake off the grime of see and bee seen newbury street. i stopped by their Print exhibit recently and i highly recommend you catch it while its still showing. they screen movies here as well, check the phoenix for listings. read more

Beautiful library and clearly one of Boston's gems! I was immediately reminded of Butler Library back in my days at Columbia. It's a great study spot when I want to change locations up a bit, but it's not nearly as comfortable and convenient as studying on campus - I agree with some of the other reviewers that the seating and lighting could use some improvement. They really need to do something about the drunks and escaped convicts that loiter around the computers. I had to leave because a few of them smelled so strongly of urine that I began to wretch. The other day there was someone screaming in their cell phone for 20 minutes also near the computers. They really need to enforce quiet as well as have some control of the street people. Walked in this library the first time and I should say it's huge. I like its location right in the middle of Boston on Boylston street. The library had many selections of booksa and DVDs. I was able to find the book I need for my rersearch and borrow some nice new DVDs that just have been released. These types of libraries is a helpfull place for people to study and research. Nice, clean and very quiet. read more

This is probabaly the biggest and best library in MA. I had a seminar here with my classmates and we were completely lost track of each others, when we tried to find some books before the seminar. The place is nice, clean, organized and "Old" (its history and location). The staffs are friendly and helpful. They attends to the individuals whenever time permitted. Great place for reading and enjoy books. read more

This is a really great library because it is easy to get to via the T, they have a huge selection of books, a microfilm room, lots of archives, and the staff is very kind. There are plenty of places to eat around here (there is even a cafe inside the library), shop, and there are plenty of other things to do in and around there so you can make a day out of going to the library, literally. read more

So colorful and full of books it is like heaven! The older side is really beautiful but I find it's often filled with tourists. If you're looking to get work done I recommend going to the new side on some of the upper floors- it's quiet and really easy to focus! The cafe (Newsfeed Cafe) on the bottom floor has come really good lunch break snacks as well! I recommend the portabella panini read more
