Ok, so this is hard. We loved Captain J. We really did. He was funny, charismatic, inclusive, safety focused and everything you would want in a tour guide. Now for the downsides: 1) We did the 2 hour tour which was nice but we only got maybe 50% of the history and importance of Boston. 2.) It was a beautiful ride and certain things were pointed out for historical importance but it was from such a far distance you couldn't really identify and picture what happened during that time. 3.) I wanted to get a real intimate knowledge of Boston which we didn't get for $100 a pop. 4.) This may be my bad but I assumed/read a lot of the famous Freedom Trail iconic sites would be explained and importance discussed but that was not the case. We will be trying to do a Freedom Trail specific tour to supplement the historical education before we leave. 5.) Was Harvard square MIT too far away to include in the tour? 6.) Could have had more knowledge of the sites we did see, more facts, more knowledge of what we did see. read more

So much fun on this tour! We opted for the 1 hour tour. The weather was perfect and Jay, our tour guide, was awesome! He went over all safety/training guidelines for riding, he was knowledgeable about fun spots and details around the city, and overall did a great job. There is no restroom inside their facility, so be sure to make a stop before your reserved time. There are backpacks on the front of the segways for your (smaller) personal belongings, and BST provides bottled water for your trip. Wear comfy, closed toed shoes! Don't be nervous about riding! You get used to it so quickly with a bit of practice. Such a great experience. We will go again next time we're in Boston! read more

The units themselves were in decent shape. They weren't new, they weren't old, they seem to be somewhere in between. we had an amazing guide, who is thoughtful and attentive. We had a little lesson before we went off, and that was extremely helpful and very considerate. They actually had us run a small test downstairs to make sure we can handle the unit.. they were safety conscious. One thing to bear in mind is that sometimes when they plan out the route it might be a little bit ambitious. Therefore, you'll have to be a little bit open minded about what you will, or won't be able to see and make certain that you put the stuff that you want to see earlier on the itinerary. Also, too, don't forget, if you stop at a given destination, and hang out for a while, you're chewing into your time. in our case, we got off to a little bit of a late start and ended early so the two hour experience was more like an hour and a half, maybe a little bit less. The reason I gave them four stars, is because our guide was extremely happy, cheery, considerate and attentive. Other than that, I might've given them three stars. They have you spend about 10 minutes total of watching a video and practicing maneuvers on the Segway inside before hitting the road; which was relieving, having never been on one. You would think this would be more awesome than it is and while the guide I had was indeed knowledgeable and interesting, using a segway is not as effective for touring as one might think. Half the fun of the tour is using the segway machine but there are many limits on where it can go. On the other hand, you can go much further, much faster than you can on foot and you don't get exhausted getting there. Nevertheless, the tour only covers sites that can be easily or safely reached by the Segway, not because they are of great importance or interest. In the end, the tour was ok; the riding was fun, the tour guide was excellent but the coverage was weak and often uninteresting. Take an Olde Towne Trolley tour or use Boston By Foot if you want a "real" tour. read more

I've never written a poor review, but we just finished our tour and my wife and I both had a pit in our stomach because of the experience. I thought it would be valuable for others to know, so I took time to write a detailed and fair review below: BACKGROUND: We scheduled a two-hour tour, so the total was about $200 (including tip). We were okay to spend this because I had done a Boston Segway tour twice prior (about 6 years ago), and couldn't say enough good things about it. Unfortunately, our experience this time around was seriously lacking, primarily because the guide didn't know much history. THE PROBLEM: We started the tour by saying we'd like to check out places from the "Freedom Tour." The guide immediately said that it wasn't an area that he was very familiar with, but that he could take us and try to figure it out. This, of course, was an epic disappointment, because the Freedom Tour and the landmarks associated with it are what makes any good tour of Boston. We told the guide to instead take us to the areas that he is familiar with, so that at a minimum we could benefit from the experiences that he had. Along the way, the guide would pull out his cellphone to learn/check facts about history and relay it to us. We would be gliding next to guides that were dressed up as colonists, and I wished so bad that we could just stop and listen to them so that we could learn something about the places we were seeing. To be fair though, there was some history that the guide did know, for example about the USS Constitution Naval Ship and Paul Revere. What put it over the top though, for me, was that unfortunately we couldn't hear a thing. Our guide didn't like using the radio (partially because it is really tough for us to make out what he was saying), but unfortunately it meant that we couldn't hear 70% of what he was saying. TO SUM IT UP: If you want to ride a Segway around Boston (which, of course, is fun), this tour is for you. But, if you want to learn anything about the city and it's history, look elsewhere. FINAL NOTE: The tour guide seemed like a great guy, and I have had great experiences with the tour in the past, but I just feel terrible about our experience. Not only was it $200, but also because we are leaving tomorrow, we will never get a chance to actually learn about this great city. read more
