The oldest restaurant in the world..... charming interiors, chaotic as soon as it opens, but winds down afterwards. Absolutely get the cochinnilo... you won't regret it's everything else is good but not wow! Our server was wonderful and made good recommendations for drinks and dessert. I suppose if it's your first time in Madrid, this will be a good spot to have dinner.
An honor to be able to experience a restaurant during its 300th year of operation. We were able to make a reservation online the day before, but the reservations can fill up so I would recommend planning ahead. This restaurant serves a lot of very good Spanish dishes. The portions are a little bit smaller, but they are still good for sharing. The dishes came out fairly quickly. They had good flavor but many of the dishes were very salty. The salt level overpowered the dishes and made it difficult to enjoy the rest of the flavors. The dishes that saved the experience were the suckling pig and roasted lamb. Both had very tender meat and were not over seasoned. If I were to go back, those are two dishes that I would want to have again out of everything that we ordered.
This was quite the experience since this restaurant is in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest restaurant in the World. Founded in 1725, this establishment is essentially inside a cave. We went for the notoriety but enjoyed their food also. It was rainy and cold so we opted for comfort food. We started with their garlic soup with egg and ham. Very tasty and soothing. Next, we had the roast chicken with vegetables. The meat was juicy, flavorful and tender without being dry. Huge portion also. For dessert, we loved Grandma's recipe Cheesecake. Terrific, soft texture without being too sweet or grainy.
When we walked in, my mom and I were told you needed a reservation. However the host, Jose, seated us at a table for two right as we were walking out! We ordered the Passion Martini and the Turron Cocktail which were absolutely FANTASTIC. I would confidently say the Turron Cocktail was one of my most favorite cocktails I've ever had! We also ordered the Mango, Arugula, and Shrimp salad, as well as the Filet Mignon which were great as well. My mom and I LOVED the salad. At the end of our meal, our server Julian, served my mom and I the Basque Cheesecake and it TRULY was the star of the show. It was definitely the best cheesecake I've ever had. What's so great about this place is the rich history that it holds, considering they hold the Guinness Book of World Records for being the oldest restaurant in the world! I truly have to say that not only was the food amazing, the service was honestly SPECTACULAR. Huge thank you to Julian, Jose, and Adrian for being so great!
This is the oldest restaurant in the world - according to The Guinness Book of world records. The place is amazing, the architecture is classical and the ambiance is serene. The staff - is very friendly and most of them speak English. Ok.. so now - the food.. I wanted to come here and experience what 300 year culinary experience would taste like.. and honestly, it tasted probably just like it did 300 years ago. It's bland and not what I was anticipating. The bread was ok, the salad average, and the cochinillo asado was more grizzle than meat. Also.. it was boiled maybe? Hard to tell. Long story short.. This is a must visit place because of its history. But the food was not so good.
We came to Botín for my dad's 70th birthday, and I wouldn't change a thing! The food was amazing! The service was undoubtedly within the top 3 services at a restaurant that I've experienced. I can't remember what tapas we shared, but my brother got the suckling pig, and my dad and I got the seafood stew. My brother absolutely loved the suckling pig, but honestly the seafood stew was next level. On our entire 2 week trip through Spain and Portugal, that seafood stew would rank in the top 2 dishes that I had. We shared 2 slices of basque cheesecake between the 4 of us, and they were absolutely to die for. The texture is so unique -creamy and gooey. What really took the experience over the top for me was the attention to detail of our server - he saw that I placed a cake topper on my dad's piece of cheesecake, and brought over another slice with a candle on it for him without us even asking. That is true attention to detail, and next level customer service. It was greatly appreciated. The ambience inside is wonderful as you can tell it is a very very old building, which it must be since it's the oldest restaurant in the world. Make sure you snag a reservation. The restaurant opens at 8 pm and there was a line full of people who had reservations. This is truly a place not to miss! And the sangria is delicious!!
The oldest restaurant in the world according to the Guinness World Records! Dating back to 1725, this restaurant retains a lot of their older decorations. Be sure to book far in advance for guaranteed seats! We tried booking 2 months ahead but they were out of spots already. Luckily we waited in line about 15 minutes before they opened for lunch and got a seat. It is a slightly higher end restaurant. The servers wore suits although the guests don't have to. Bread is provided but it costs money if you eat it. We got their signature roasted suckling pig which was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. There wasn't too much flavor outside of the meat, but that was okay for me. The dish was featured in a Hemingway novel so it is a very old dish. Not many people can say they've been to the oldest restaurant in the world!
Honestly.. After 300 years, you should've learned to cook a steak by now This was one place we had to try while in Madrid due to the history. However, color me underwhelmed. The food just isn't up to snuff. We sat in the basement area. The service and ambiance are great. No complaints there. Towards the end of our meal, a group of four musicians came in and played live music and sang. So that was nice. The real star is the cheesecake- it's unlike anything I've tried anywhere else and worth the visit.
What can I say?... there's something special, as a foodie, knowing you're eating at one of the oldest restaurants in the world. Although online it said no more reservations were available, we were able to snag a reservation with 2 days notice by calling. Sure we had to eat early (1:30pm) but who cares! I did find the servers a bit on the snobbish side however that did not take away from our great experience. I loved their suckling pig and their sangria was the best I had during my time in Spain. Unfortunately I was so excited for the pig, I forgot to snap a picture!!
Ok so... This place is not just all hype! I understand that this is like the oldest restaurant in the world or something like that and with that there will be some exaggerating about the quality of this place, but I must admit that this place did NOT disappoint. The atmosphere is nice and historic, the sangria was delicious, and the food was amazing. The staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed ourselves here and will be back. You must book a reservation as they are not open all day and dinner service is very popular for them. Another thing, when you order a portion of the roasted pig you don't get the whole pig. I know that should go without saying but half my table was shocked that they didn't get the historic roasted pig for the table lol. Either way, that it was awesome and deserves its reputation. Update: I returned to Botin for my birthday and this time was even better than my first time here. My sirloin was delicious, the lamb, chicken, wine, coffee, and mango salad was also very good. I really like this place
Excellent service and very enjoyable experience. I was able to make a reservation for 10pm dinner the day before and we were seated 15 minutes early. I was with three friends and we had the suckling pig, roast chicken, and steak, as well as a jar of sangria and lotus martinis for dessert. The suckling pig and the drinks were delicious! The other dishes were okay. At the higher price point of this restaurant, my friends who opted not to get the suckling pig were not as satisfied with the value for cost. Overall, it was interesting to visit for the history and iconic dishes and I would bring a friend who hadn't been before in the future.

We came from NYC and made reservations right away to have the experience of eating at the oldest restaurant in the world also because it was recommended by YouTube Spain revealed, the food was mediocre and very expensive, I wouldn't not recommend as there are other place much more worthy of your money. read more

It's a bit of a tourist trap. The restaurants's allure is the fact that it has been open since 1725 and having its 300 year anniversary, but the food was not worth the cost. We got the Pollo which was very dry and flavorless, the Cordero which was tender, but again not seasoned at all and unless you order vegetables it was unaccompanied by anything else. My husband ordered the all popular suckling pig, which for me the smell was unbearable and it lacked flavor again. Our last order were the clams, these were very favorable unfortunately too salty though. The garlic soup starter was good according to my husband, but a bit oily for me. For dessert we tried the cheesecake, flan, and the Botin torta. They were okay, but not WOW as again you would expect from such an expensive restaurant that is claimed to be amazing. I would not return and I think a quick view inside would be the best thing and then find a better more flavorful place to eat. read more

Ok let me start of by saying the ambiance in this restaurant is super nice but small. The service is fast and most know English to some extent. We ordered the garlic and egg soup, scrambled eggs, Botin salad, vegetables mix, roasted lamb, steak and a few other small things. I must say the food is mediocre with the exception of the lamb that was packed full of flavors, and the soup was delicious. Other than that the rest of the food was a bit bland. They also placed a plate of steak on our table and then realized it wasn't ours and took it away. Being one of the oldest restaurants around I would have guessed the food would have been the show stopper. But the sides were lacking for the price you pay the quantity is also small. If the food was all outstanding I would have hands down given this a 5 star. read more

I heard about this place from a NYT article and knew that I couldn't leave Madrid without visiting it for dinner. Its the OLDEST restaurant in the entire world. Its 50 years older than the United States so that says a lot right there. We got to dinner a little early so it was empty when we walked in. We sat in the first section of the restaurant and got right down to business. My friend got the garlic soup with ham and an egg on top. I chose to go with the assorted vegetables with shredded ham mixed into it. My dish was pretty decently sized, but I went for it and ordered roast chicken with vegetables. I felt crappy that I couldn't finish it, but my friend was in another sitch. He chose the suckling pig specialty an couldn't complete it either. Despite the failure of finishing it, both of us still went after dessert. I figured since this place had been around for almost 300 years, they were gonna get Creme Catalan (Creme Brulee) right. It was a tie for the best Creme Brulee I have ever had in my life with another one of my reviews for Main Street Cafe so if you're in America, you can see what I mean. This is not only a great restaurant for Spanish food, but it is a truly historic establishment as Hemingway frequented coming here. read more
This restaurant is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the oldest restaurant in the world, so what could we do but patronize it?! It definitely has old world charm with the waiters in white jackets and black slacks. The walls were covered with beautiful tiles and the dark wood work added to the charm. And to add to my satisfaction, the food did *not* disappoint!! Their specialties are roast lamb and roast suckling pork. We ordered as a group to increase the number of items we could try and the group decided on the garlic soup with egg, suckling pork, garlic shrimps, roast chicken with vegetables, and mixed fish in casserole. Every dish was delicious; the suckling pork was so amazingly tender with a wonderful crackling skin. The garlic soup was very flavorful without an overpowering taste of garlic. The fish in casserole had a variety of seafood with a tomato base and was also amazing! The only dish that didn't jump out at me was the roast chicken; while very good, it was nothing unique or extraordinary... just your usual good ol' roast chicken! The portions were very generous and we could've done with one less dish; I hate wasting food, but it was impossible to take the leftovers with us since we were staying in a hotel. You'd think we'd be too stuffed to order dessert, but, no, we had to try their Tarta Botin since it was named after their restaurant! It was a beautiful slice of cake with cream and a meringue topping. While a fantastic presentation, it didn't seem to have much flavor to me; it would've benefited from a touch of vanilla or other flavoring. Well, regardless, we *had* to try it! If you're in Madrid and want to go, be sure you make a reservation. They were quite crowded when we arrived and stayed so for the duration of our meal. read more

Food, Service & Ambiance were just perfect. We ordered their suckling pig, veal, asparagus, sangria and cheese cake. We went here for the charm and we were extremely grateful for the experience. I think it's a great experience! read more
Enjoyed my visit to Botin much more than I anticipated. I was expecting to dislike the food and leave thinking I had succumbed to another overpriced tourist trap. Thankfully, the visit was not like that haha. We arrived on time for our reservation and found a long line whether you had a reservation or not. A gentleman inside later checked if we had a reservation and instructed us to go upstairs (3rd floor) to find our seat. The vibe was historical, comfy and unpretentious. I think the 3rd door is the least appealing for photos fyi. We ordered 3 orders of the suckling pig, garlic shrimp and clams botin as mains. We ordered the tripe, asparagus mayo and mango salad as appetizers. Asparagus ordered coffee, cheesecake and Botin cake for dessert. The garlic shrimp delicious, but small in portion (like an appy). The clams were good but tasted very similar to the tripe that it seemed redundant. The asparagus was much softer/mushier than expected-it was ok I guess. The mango salad was such a welcome addition to the meal, as all the food was pretty heavy. Since we ordered 3 portions of the suckling pig, we received half the pig. To receive a whole pig, you need to order 6 portions. If ordering a whole pig, they bring it to the table for pictures before they cut it up, and give you the option to keep or discard the head. Even if you don't order a whole pig, we noted several opportunities to take picture of the whole pig. You can take a picture of the kitchen with the wall shelf full of roasted pigs-it is located on the first floor, at the base of the stairs. Tasted like Chinese roast pork, minus the spices. Both the desserts were delicious! Our dinner for 6, including a bottle of water and wine, came out to about $250 euros. It was too much food, despite ordering only 5 mains. Service was great. Our server replaced our dinner plates as he felt they were not warm enough. Recommended for the overall experience. But recommend to order with care and balance as the items we selected were quite heavy. read more
We were able to get a 10:30 reservation and it was an amazing experience. Be sure to make a reservation - it was packed and looks like they book quick. Let's start with the history. This is the oldest restaurant in the world and it's easy to see how they are still standing. Quality service and simple delicious food is what you can expect. We were lucky enough to get to see the original oven and the wine cellar that used to have a tunnel that ran into the Spanish Palace. A once in a lifetime experience! Now for the food. The smoked salmon was perfect! It looks simple, but it was DELICIOUS! The filet mignon botin was perfectly cooked and the mushroom sauce was a delicious combo. It was also a great portion. The almond chicken was actually my favorite. The almond sauce was savory and a little sweet. The lamb was also delicious, but was challenging to eat without looking like a cave person. SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT! We had the cheesecake, Flan, Creme Brûlée, carrot cake and tiramisu (I forgot to take a couple pictures). The cheesecake, tiramisu and carrot cake were the winners. I can honestly say they were the best I've ever had. A little on the expensive side, but well worth it! Botin is a must if you are visiting Madrid. read more
This is the oldest restaurant in the world !! It is very surreal to be at this restaurant knowing the history that surrounds it. We did a tour and lunch package and our tour guide was soo knowledgeable and friendly. I do recommend taking a tour however I wish I would of known that we would be limited to a set menu as the lunch option include in the tour package (keep that in mind). I enjoyed the succulent pig and the other dishes. Service was a bit slow , and our server wasn't the friendliest. All in all I am glad we had the experience. Great sangria ! read more
We couldn't get dinner reservations at the oldest restaurant in Spain from 1725. We us to came back at 2 o'clock and were seated for an elegant late lunch. Botin felt like a step back in time, rustic yet charming. Botin was written on every detail from the spoon to stir the sangria, pitchers, plates... We were given a souvenir menu We shared a sangria, salad, roast lamb & assorted vegetables. Service was impeccable. Our sangria was sweet, fruity & fresh. Our meal was just OK, it wasn't anything special. Portions were generous, I'm glad we shared. Okay It was a splurge meal in Spain. read more

The place is fabulous--classic Spanish food that is superb. The wait staff are very accommodating and sensitive to children's needs. The ambiance--Spanish style decor (tile work and paintings---very well air conditioned which is a must in the summer. Only the first floor is handicap accessible (though the restrooms may not be. There are restrooms on each floor however. It's the oldest restaurant in the world (celebrating 300 years this year). Try the cochinillo or the solomillo. Crema catalana or Torta de Queso for dessert. read more

We got so lucky to be able to try the oldest restaurant in the world without reservations! We tried looking beforehand but it was all booked. So we tried our luck for lunch and lo and behold, they had seating. Not gunna lie, I wasn't expecting the food to be good because I thought it'd be too gimmicky. But it was very very good. Felt like I was a king dining on old kingdom type food. Bread, wine, soup, roasted whole pig, salad and ice cream? Aka their House special which they will tell you is enough for 1 person but it is a lot of food. I'm glad we shared because I don't think I would be able to finish it by myself. read more
To be able to have a lovely dinner in one of the worlds oldest restaurant is an understatement. My fiancé made reservations and we lucky to have been seated in the underground dining area. It was so ambient and calming. The lighting fixtures, tiles and bricks are all original so it's exciting to see the art work and originality. The food: Can't miss the roasted pork. So flavorful with crispy skin and meat that shreds so easily. Perfect portion to share between two with a nice bottle of wine. The appetizers consisted of a plate of cheese and the thinnest juiciest ham. Perfect combo. Dessert: we had to have both: flan and crème brûlée. Both amazing and satisfied my sweet tooth. Flan with whipped cream is my absolute favorite The service: We had a lovely older man working so hard and explaining our dishes thoroughly. We tipped him well and had a great experience. One the oldest restaurants in the world. Saw reviews on trip advisor and it was a must to pay a visit. My only complaint was the staff was a tad rude. No one really spoke English not even the bare minimum. I know putting a smile on your face, not a resting bitch one can be hard but try. Again did I mention Spain's services on food is really quick. No waiting and always bringing all your food at once. I'd like to say it was a great experience with the food. I'm sure overtime the recipe has changed but the restaurant itself has old finding back in 1725. Would I come back? Probably not but glad I came. Ps. I'm giving up pork. read more

I like to come back and try other menus Service not so good The waiter was so rude and so annoyed with everyone taking a picture while he was serving the food We came in at 8 PM when it's open that means he wasn't tired The host was amazing! Everyone had reservations months ago to dine in but we just walked in and asked for table for three! He let us in!!! Seated by the bar area! We wanted to order the whole baby pig but it serves six people. So we end up ordering the set menu that includes Garlic Egg soup, Suckling pig, half bottle wine, and ice cream Then we ordered the Lamb and Anchovy It's more than enough for three people Ambiance is like dinning in a castle. The oldest restaurant in the world? Yes! Go check this place out. This place is most known for their roasted suckling pig and it's well worth the visit if you can get in. The food is delicious and the building is an interesting experience. The building is very old and you can see the rough cut 600 year old beams against a thick plaster wall. I'm guessing the walls are dung, mud, or a combination of both. You don't stay open for hundreds of years of your food sucks. This place is 100% guaranteed to make you happy and create memories you'll talk about for years to come. read more

This is the oldest restaurant in the world. The restaurant has old charm deco, with dining rooms upstairs and ground floor. The restaurant must be very popular as 1st available online reservation on Tues Oct 8th was about 2 months on Dec 10 2024. There was a long queue when we arrived at 1250pm, 10min before restaurant opened. We joined the right queue for people with no reservations and waited until all the people with reservations were seated upstairs. About 30min wait, we were given a nice table on the ground floor just to the right of the entrance, which I think is better than the tables upstairs. The dishes were relatively more expensive, due to its popularity. We had the popular Suckling pork (35 Euro) and Grilled shrimp (32 Euro). The Sangria was 5 Euro and beer 3.5 Euro. Overall, it wad a good experience dining in the world's oldest restaurant and glad we were lucky to get a table. read more
This was in our bucket list and finally made it to Madrid which was our first stop in our second trip to Europe this year. Our hotel was about 20 mins away and we were so excited to visit the "oldest restaurant in the world". So much history just walking in and the service was great. We ordered the croquettes, suckling pig, and baby lamb. The food did not disappoint and were so happy with ordering enough food without too much leftovers. read more
Amazing staff! They were able to accommodate our 20 person party. Service and food were great. We ordered almost everything in the menu just to try it. Our party was beyond satisfied to not only be able to get a reservation for such a large party but to be served in a timely manner and let's not forget the food itself! OLDEST RESTAURANT IN THE WORLD, ALMOST 300 YEARS OLD! had to check out the hype. they specialize in ROASTED SUCKLING PIG, so immaculate with the crispy outer layer and juiciness of the meat. presentation of the table side service added the final touch. potatoes are soaked in the juices as well, adding a mouthful of pure bliss. garlic shrimp, baby lamb, and clams were good too, but you gotta go for the pig. ended with a cheese mascarpone, ice, and mango cream dessert that was solid but nothing mindblowing. read more

First evening in Madrid and had to visit a local favorite (i had to book 4 months in advance, well worth it) I had the fillet mignon botin it was divine with the large green beans and bacon nom nom nom man when I tell you I'm already planning my next visit when waiting to be seated ask to be seated in the caves read more

This restaurant boosted to be the oldest restaurant in the Guinness book of records. One cannot repute this if one have ever dined in the below deck room of the Casa. But there is a good reason for its longevity. It is the only restaurant that serves the roasted piglets. Or at least, the famous one. I am not sure I appreciated the fact that they did not show me the whole piglet on the plate before the waiter dissected it and portioned it out to different serving plates. But perhaps that shows their or their customer's sensitivity to roasting baby pigs. They also served a good size Botin salad that goes well with the piglet. For fair warning that the main dish comes with nothing else but a small boiled potato!! read more

When planning my itinerary for Madrid, I did not know that the earliest restaurant in the world (according to the Guinness Book of Records) was located there. Making a reservation was easy online and the restaurant sends an email the day of to confirm. The restaurant was a 5 minute walk from Plaza Major and easy to find. My reservation was for 8pm, which is when they open for dinner service. We were seated immediately and given an English menu. The restaurant filled up quick! If you are looking for a nice quiet dinner, this is not the place to go. The tables are small and close together. Not only that, it can get pretty loud and if you're seated upstairs, you will hear non stop stomping up and down the staircase. The food was on the pricier side and average tasting. Even though I read mixed reviews about the roasted suckling pig, I ordered it anyway because it was one of their specialities. The skin was crisp and the meat was juicy. Good, but not amazing. I recommend the grilled prawns. Botin was one of the few restaurants I went to that didn't automatically give you bread and charge for it. Butter will cost you extra. I probably wouldn't go back again. At least I can say I went to the earliest restaurant in the world. read more

No Madrid visit complete without a meal at Botin. Yes, it's a tourist trap. And yes, the food is good but not great. And it did not help that we had eaten at Jose Maria in Segovia the day before and is the subject of a 5* review. Sorry, the suckling pig is a whole league ahead of Botin. We had reserved for 4 but our guest got sick. Did not seem to be a problem. But the asian American ladies in front of us had their reservation cancelled as they were the only ones present. We therefore invited them to share our 4 top. The maitre d was peeved. Seemed a bit racist. 90 mins later we were full of lamb and pig washed down with the house wine, a nice Ribera - and met two nice Bostonian conversationalists. Overall Botin impression? It's cool, old, rustic, the hardest reservation to get in Madrid. The food is good and service to match. It's also a tour stop for tourist to marvel over the outside of the venue. Got to do it once. Shameless tourist. read more
